Brendan Rodgers’ gargantuan task

267

When the Champions League group stage draw was made I don’t think many of us considered the head-to-head between Celtic and Bayern Munich would be critical in deciding who finishes second. PSG’s 3-0 win over Bayern in Paris, together with their 0-5 in Glasgow, effectively ensures they will top the group. Celtic’s 0-3 in Brussels makes it practically impossible for Anderlecht to avoid bottom place.

All this means the only thing left to determine is the final position of Celtic and Bayern Munich. The German champions are overwhelming favourites and rightly so. There may be 32 teams left in the tournament, but two of the top four favourites to lift the trophy are alongside Celtic and Anderlecht in Group B. It would take a gargantuan task for Celtic to get the better of Bayern on the head-to-head, never mind in Munich. You can get 30/1 against Celtic tomorrow night, but I will not be betting, even at those odds.

It is at this stage, worthwhile acknowledging what happened to create this face-off between Celtic and Bayern Munich. Both teams were thumped by PSG, and both beat Anderlecht by three goals; Celtic away from home. Bayern responded to the appointment of new manager Jupp Heynkes with a 5-0 win at the weekend, but that came about because a drift in form was discernible. They are a team who have looked vulnerable.

Great teams can look vulnerable and still win 5-0, and I’m not going to tell you Celtic are going to turn them over tomorrow night, but Brendan Rodgers is planning for exactly that outcome. I might not bet Celtic at 30/1, but I don’t fancy the potential 12% return over one day available on Bayern Munich either.

Many thanks to everyone who entered the competition to win the James Forrest’s National Famine Memorial shirt. The raffle will end at midnight tonight, so if you would like to enter answer this question…….

Which Brazilian PSG player was booked for diving on match day one of this season’s Champions League?

I am okay with the draw against Denmark …. it wont be easy, but there were no easy draws there …

although denmark are higher ranked, historically, ireland have done okay against them …5w, 5d, 3 l …

  2. When it comes to CL nights v the Big Boys my attitude is hope for the best but fear for the worst.

The best includes not getting horsed the worst is getting horsed.

    Anything else is a result.

    It’s a dignity thing.

  3. Off the subject I know, but I like to watch and read old Biographies and TV Interviews by my old film stars on Youtube etc.

I watched a couple yesterday on Youtube with the two great hard drinking Irishmen actors Peter O’Toole and Richard Harris. Both men were often described and remembered as being ” Hell Raisers” due to their hard drinking for many years.

In one American tv chat show the host observed that Peter O’Toole was wearing a Wristwatch on each arm, and asked Peter ” Why do you wear two wrist watches” ?

Mr O’Toole replied in a very droll dry wit….” My dear boy, I do so as I do not wish to waste time looking at the wrong wrist” !

    Sheer Class Peter.

If you are a Peter O’toole fan (as I am), you should watch My Favourite Year (if you haven’t already seen it).

It is set in the 1950’s, and Peter O’toole plays an old silent movie star (an Errol Flynnn type), who has ‘wasted’ his life on booze and woman.. he is scheduled to do an appearance on a TV show (like the old Sid Ceasar show), and Mark Lynn Baker is tasked with keeping him sober and making sure he shows up…

Peter O’toole is brilliant in it … sort of plays himself playing an old star ….I think he may have been nominated an oscar for the performance…. terrific little film made greater by a start turn by PO’T!

  7. MIKEINTORONTO & ERNIE LYNCH.

Cheers Boys for your posts about the old film stars.

i will try and watch My Favourite Year, as I don’t think I have seen it, however, I have watched Mr O’Toole speak of it in interviews when asked to to do so by tv hosts.

I remember many years ago reading ( no internet back then), that during Heart surgery John Wayne was given a ” Heart Valve” that once belonged to a Pig.

Some of the Dukes critics were quick to quip….” Yes, but the Pig rejected John Wayne” !

I am quite aware of John Waynes politics etc, but it still doesn’t prevent me from watching him in his numerous Cowboy roles…and The Quiet Man etc.

In the movie “The Searchers”, i thought he given a fantastic performance in what was a very dark character, as he searches long and hard to save his niece debbie ( Natalie Wood) from the Indians, it’s not until he catches up with her that the audience realises that it was his intention to kill her, because she had been raised by the Indians ( this was his characters way of “saving” her ?) and it’s the intervention of Martin Pawley ( Jeffrey Hunter) who stops him, only for Uncle Ethan ( John Wayne) suddenly realising that he can’t possibly shoot her, as he loves her.

    Great stuff.

The actor Jeffrey Hunter met a pre mature death aged around 44 ?

He was injured when a car stunt in a movie went wrong somewhere in Europe, and returned to the USA immediately. The American doctors apparently released him from hospital believing that jeff had not suffered any head injury ?

Some months later, at home he took a Brain heamoragge and fell down the stairs and suffered another head injury on a Planter and died,

    Very sad reading.

Like you, I was not a fan of his politics, but I still liked some of John Wayne’s films (and I am not even going to mention his alleged deathbed conversion to RC).

My favourite John Wayne movie … probably The Shootist … his last film, made while he was dying of cancer … he plays an old gunslinger who is dying of cancer … I think it is his best ‘acting’ job

  12. The Battered Bunnet on

Allowing that Bayern will likely have more possession, I’m sure Brendan will have a shape in mind when we’re defending. Defending well is first base in these huge matches.

More important however is how we use the ball. Every time we get a foot on it, we get a chance to do something with it – whether that’s catching our breath or attacking.

The match will turn on how well we use the ball. Use the ball well and we’ll compete. Lose it repeatedly, and we’ll get battered. On recent evidence, there’s a clear concern that our passing will be our undoing tomorrow night.

  13. Hoping for a good performance from Celtic to-morrow night and I will be happy regardless of the result, anything but a Bayern goalfest. So Celtic should dig in and hit the germans on the break. Celtic were poor and nervy in the first twenty minutes of the Anderlecht match with too mqny unforced errors misplaced passes etc. Ntcham to me has gone back on the superb early promise he showed in the qualifiers although he seems to have the midas touch for creating and scoring important goals as against Astana and the Belgians. I think Celtic could do well against the Germans at Celtic Park.

See Harry Kane is being touted in the press as a 170 million player. I ask myself is he really that much better than leigh Griffiths, i don’t think so. interesting to see how he gets on to-night against Real Madrid.

Martin O’Neill is a lucky manager no doubt after the ROIrl drew Denmark in the World Cup playoff giving the team a real chance of qualifying. The four week long World Cup is really now a borerfest. Martin got a great performance from Celtic the last time the Hoops played Bayern and who can forget the game in Germany in the EUFA Cup run.

Seriously we could barely cope with Dundee playing a high pressing game and we’re now talking about second place against one of the top teams in Europe, the lunatics have taken over the asaylum. Might as well be demanding 5 ffs :)

  16. With regards to the comments

by Barry Ferguson on the outcome

    of season 2007-08 .

    The reviewer of said season

In The Sky Football Yearbook 2008-09

Was of one mind with Mr Ferguson

    he wrote .

However there was a European Finalist

as Rangers reached the last stage

of the UEFA Cup having at one time

had thoughts of an unprecedented quadruple

of Scottish Premier League ,European Glory ,

and two domestic cup competitions .(their

records don’t go back as far as 1966-67) .

Events conspired against them and the

fixture list provided too many matches

in to short a space of time. Rangers were not

afforded the luxury given to their final

Opponents Zenit St Petersburg, who were allowed

    Dispensation to postpone Russian League

commitments until after the final .

It should not be forgotten that Rangers had

started their continental adventure in the

    Second Qualifying Round of the

    Champions League .

  17. I love Brendan but we need to be pragmatic when you play the Big Boys. Go toe to toe with Barca, PSG or Bayern and you are likely to be hammered.

We need to park the bus and try & hit them on the break.

You are most vulnerable to these teams when you lose possession. Obviously try & keep it and pass it around if we can but don;t take risks, remember the old RowZ alternative if under pressure.

  18. The optimism and hope before every clash with a genuine European talent is always there.

Some fans are realists and others are defiant.

In our history there are reasons for both.

I hope we continually learn and improve at this level.

    Ya pussy…

    …………………………..

I deliberately left out Oliver Reed, only because from what Ive read he had a very weird way of having fun when drunk imo, like showing off his manhood etc and fist fights. I always felt that there was maybe a loutish aspect of Olivers behaviour when drunk, although I liked him as an actor. I maybe wrong, but Oliver wasn’t noted for his drunken story telling unlike the others.

Now Robert Mitchum…there was another guy that I would have loved to have had a beer with although he wasn’t a story teller either.

  20. Go tell the Spartim on

Youd hope we’d be looking at a CB in the January window. How many times this season have we fielded what you would consider a full strength defence, once, twice?

  21. I dont disagree with Row Z when necessary, however the way Brendan talks I think he will not accept this and expects our players to keep it and pass it around, if we kick it long or out of play it gives the ball back to the opponent, i would double up in the full back position tomorrow with JF helping Gamboa, KT getting help from his wide man, Lustig will now be at centre back now Jozo is out providing he is fit, we will not have the ball much tomorrow i think.

  25. The Battered Bunnet on

Sviatchenko has now been out for 11 weeks, having had a standard 6 week medial ligs strain. Even if he required a little surgery to tidy up the knee, he’d have been back a while now.

    What’s up?

  26. The thing that differentiates the European elite and the rest of us is apart from cash their anticipation and belief.

When the bigger teams meet each other some of that belief is lost and we see them make more errors unlike they did with us.

Their belief is not always justified but teams playing these behemoths usually fall victim to self doubt.

Celtic v PSG being a good example.

Similarly Bayern bought into the PSG hype and played with less assurance than normal.

The physiological factor is something we have to learn to deal with if we are to become a European force again.
