Brendan Rodgers’ gargantuan task

267

When the Champions League group stage draw was made I don’t think many of us considered the head-to-head between Celtic and Bayern Munich would be critical in deciding who finishes second. PSG’s 3-0 win over Bayern in Paris, together with their 0-5 in Glasgow, effectively ensures they will top the group. Celtic’s 0-3 in Brussels makes it practically impossible for Anderlecht to avoid bottom place.

All this means the only thing left to determine is the final position of Celtic and Bayern Munich. The German champions are overwhelming favourites and rightly so. There may be 32 teams left in the tournament, but two of the top four favourites to lift the trophy are alongside Celtic and Anderlecht in Group B. It would take a gargantuan task for Celtic to get the better of Bayern on the head-to-head, never mind in Munich. You can get 30/1 against Celtic tomorrow night, but I will not be betting, even at those odds.

It is at this stage, worthwhile acknowledging what happened to create this face-off between Celtic and Bayern Munich. Both teams were thumped by PSG, and both beat Anderlecht by three goals; Celtic away from home. Bayern responded to the appointment of new manager Jupp Heynkes with a 5-0 win at the weekend, but that came about because a drift in form was discernible. They are a team who have looked vulnerable.

Great teams can look vulnerable and still win 5-0, and I’m not going to tell you Celtic are going to turn them over tomorrow night, but Brendan Rodgers is planning for exactly that outcome. I might not bet Celtic at 30/1, but I don’t fancy the potential 12% return over one day available on Bayern Munich either.

Many thanks to everyone who entered the competition to win the James Forrest’s National Famine Memorial shirt. The raffle will end at midnight tonight, so if you would like to enter answer this question…….

Which Brazilian PSG player was booked for diving on match day one of this season’s Champions League?

Good Morning Bhoys Well Jozo is injured once again he may be a great centre back but as he keeps getting injured and is out for long periods he is as usefull as a chocolate tea pot. I believe we need to replace the player.Tonights game for me will be a worry I hate to see us get a humping like we did against P.S.G. it makes for rotten viewing but if we get a result like we did against Anderlecht you just cant beat that feeling.Bayern have many big stars in there team and also have home advantage so we will have to play well above ourselves if we are going to get anything from the match.H.H.

Mixed feelings about the game tonight. I hope for, but don’t expect anything from the game. Getting beat won’t be unexpected or a disappointment – getting beat by ore than 2 will be a disappointment however.

On our day we can get a result by putting in a disciplined performance with a wee bit of luck. Brown and Ntcham will, IMHO, be key to this. If they can force themselves on the midfield it will give our defence a breather and allow our creative players to shine.

Looking for big performances from everyone, but especially Roberts, Sinclair and Rogic (who I hope will play).

    More in hope than expectation.

  10. Hunderbirds are gone – i think Big Jimmy just fainted :-)

    Happy birthday to Malorbhoy!

Enjoy the trip bhoys an ghirls whatever happens at the match.

  11. The Jozo continuous injury situation, and the fact we done nothing to address it, is my only beef with Brendan.

To be stepping out tonight v such formidable opposition with a makeshift defence, yet again, is bad management.

It’s inexplicable. Everyone knew the situation re our central defence weaknesses . The money is there. Why wasn’t it utilised to strengthen?

Is Lustig gonna fill in? Nir?

Either way, it’s going to require a Herculean effort to not only take something from the game, but to avoid a real doing.

I’m sure we won’t adopt the ( foreign to us) formation of 5 at the back. We tried that in Barcelona and it didn’t end well.

So it’ll be 5 across the middle. Those 5, have got some shift ahead of them. Given it’ll take players with running power and stamina, I assume Calum will start.

Never say never with this group of bhoys but I’m somewhat anxious about tonight. Of course losing to Bayern away can be a fate suffered by better teams than us, but a thumping is never pleasant.

Hope we can get some sort of a foothold early doors but this has all the signs of being a very long night.

Any kind of result over there would be magnificent, but the reality is it’s extremely unlikely.

Cmon bhoys, make me repost this tonight as I chomp on a huge portion of humble pie.

There’s a problem with Jozo for sure. Turning out to be our own Daniel Prodan.

And as there’s also now a problem with Sviatchenko, well,we have a problem.

Maybe we should have taken the risk on the South African Beckenbauer, but can you blame the club for deciding not when you look at the Jozo situation?

Difficult. Our first-choice CH partnership have barely played a game. We don’t seem to have a ready replacement in the youths, and Dedryck is left to play alongside a makeshift partner,so no chance of that being an actual partnership.

Strictly speaking,we need a Lambo,NL type to patrol in front of them. Or just force BM out wide and hope the full-backs can nip the attack in the bud,or that the CHs defend like the Alamo.

Not got high expectations tonight, mate. But I know every player will be at full 100% effort and commitment.

Btw,you know John Ferguson, ousted Godolphin supremo? I’ll send you some interesting-if circumstantial-stuff on his bloodstock operations over the next few days. Bin Suroor may well have been understating the case.

    …………………

Any info on John Ferguson formerly of Godolphin would be appreciated BMCUWP.

I first followed him a few years ago when I discovered his breeding links with the Godolphin stable, just after he started to train on his own, horses over the jumps.

He caught my eye early doors when I realised this man was wearing two hats, as it was shown that he was getting horses from Godolphin that were not deemed fast enough for the flat racing as young 3 and 4 year olds etc, and entering them into the national hunt Racing, and for a while a lot of his horses were winning at big prices first time out.

I told a few of my racing mates about Ferguson at the time, and we got a few winners.

i saw an interview with John Ferguson on ITV a few weeks ago, but I didn’t catch it all, so I do wonder if he’s starting to train horses again ?

    BIGJIMMY

Will do,mate. He’s not training,he was a major player in bloodstock for years-buying for the new-to-the-game Arabs. He then became racing manager to Godolphin.

As I said, circumstantial, and I haven’t really looked too far into it,but he was clearly overpaying at times. So who knows how many were allowed to “slip through” his employers’ fingers due to erroneous advice?
