Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen

624

Celtic struggled for much of the afternoon against Aberdeen but a second half goal from Charlie Mulgrew secured the win.  The home team opened well and had a patience about their play which prevented Aberdeen from seeing much of the ball.

Aberdeen had the best chance in the opening stages of the game when Fraser Fyvie crossed from the left but Fraser Forster did very well to intercept an awkward cross under pressure.  Celtic soon regained control and profited after 17 minutes when Beram Kayal found Gary Hooper, who squared to Ki in space.  The Korean midfielder shot low and hard; Aberdeen keeper David Gonzalez could only slow its progress into the net.

Glenn Loovens, who put in a solid shift in Rennes on Thursday and opened well today, retired injured immediately after the goal, giving Daniel Majstorovic a return to the team.

Aberdeen, who lost by 9 goals in the corresponding fixture last season, slowly played their way back into the game as Celtic perceivably wilted.  The early fluency from Celtic was clearly absent as the second half got underway.  Anthony Stokes was combative up front but struggled to link with Gary Hooper, who is clearly playing below his best.

Ryan Jack drew Aberdeen level just before the hour mark when he jinked past Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama, and shot into Forster’s bottom right corner.

Celtic then realised they were in a game and applied themselves with greater effect, forcing Aberdeen to defend four consecutive corners within minutes of drawing level, but without a cutting edge up front, they failed to work Gonzalez.

With 20 minutes remaining Neil Lennon recalled Paddy McCourt from a lengthy period out of the team but before Paddy could work his magic Celtic were ahead.  Majstorovic knocked a free kick onto Charlie Mulgrew who took a touch before firing high into the net.

McCourt was an effective relief on an uninspiring game and clipped the ball narrowly wide after one of his trademark runs, proving beyond any doubt that he possesses unique abilities.

With 10 minutes remaining referee, Stevie O’Reilly, who has having a poor game, ordered off Ryan Jack for a second bookable offence.  The Aberdeen goal-scorer will miss next weekend’s game against Rangers.

Aberdeen’s 10 men caused Celtic a few anxious moments in the final minute of the game but could not find a way past Forster.

Yir correct there, he’s well …. connected and the thugs will be bricking it, so much so that one of them has gave himself up already as I understand it.

  2. TET,

I would love someone like Hooper to take matters further. The media would be in meltdown. Personally, I yearn for the day when we no longer have to play in this country. Then, we might get a level playing field. No matter how much I appreciate the work done by the likes of Auldheid, we are always going to be up against it here.

I know we are a poor team at the moment but how much of that is down to never getting a break, to refs simply cheating us and the opposition being allowed carte blanche to kick us all over the pitch. How often today were Aberdeen allowed to put an end to any threatening moves from us by simply kicking a Celtic player. We were not allowed to build up any momentum and/or confidence. The foreign players particularly must find it baffling at times.

  3. The Honest Cover-up on

    PFayr,

Correct, though I doubt many Rangers fans would be incisive enough to ask any searching questions!

Perhaps he was worried a timposter may infiltrate the show and ask him, “so Jim, after seeing Alistair Johnstone’s comments will you finally apologise to Chick Young for your disgusting bullying of him?”.

Or how about, “pretty much everything you’ve written about Whyte has been proven to be nonsense (billionaire, will spend £15m on players). Is it the case you are acting on instruction of media house in your reporting?”

  4. Still not finding anything specific in the FIFA laws of the game about celebrating. Apparently its in law 12 but so far I cant see it. The best description so far is in an Australian site:

    http://laws.footballwest.com.au/procedures/view/fouls-and-misconduct

    Celebration of a goal

While it is permissible for a player to demonstrate his joy when a goal has been scored, the celebration must not be excessive.

Reasonable celebrations are allowed, but the practice of choreographed celebrations is not to be encouraged when it results in excessive time-wasting and referees are instructed to intervene in such cases.

A player must be cautioned if:

    • in the opinion of the referee, he makes gestures which are provocative, derisory or inflammatory

    • he climbs on to a perimeter fence to celebrate a goal being scored

    • he removes his shirt or covers his head with his shirt

    • he covers his head or face with a mask or other similar item

Leaving the field of play to celebrate a goal is not a cautionable offence in itself but it is essential that players return to the field of play as soon as possible.

Referees are expected to act in a preventative manner and to exercise common sense in dealing with the celebration of a goal.

  5. I really wish Lenny would stop shifting our most consistent performer to accomodate others. Joe Ledley deserves his rightful place in central midfield.

GB aside the support today really have stop flapping……a missed tackle, misplaced pass, anything in last 10 mins and the moans and groans are loud n clear.

Today was about getting 3 points and the three points were delivered.

On to Wednesday now when the team will have the full backing from the away support.

Think Hamiltontim posted last nigh tabout rather having 25000 true tims at CP and i totally agree. The home support is not great.

Hamiltontim, youre a true Celtic man and I pass my sincere condolences on your loss.

    Rule 16.90 clearly states

“in the unlikely event that the timmys manage to score a goal, the bretheren shall have the unbridled authority to issue a caution or greater should the aforementioned timmy, leave the field of play, stay on the field of play, smile, stare, laugh, cry, breathe or in any other way not yet listed celebrate the aforementioned flukey goal”

  7. Evening all.

Anyone know what’s happend to Rogne? I think he was unfairly slated in the cup against them last year.

I know he was injured at the start of the season, surely he must get a chance before Loovens & Dan?

1.0 is far better then 2.1 IMO. Clean sheets dont lose games, confidence at the back = confidence all over the pitch (and stands)

Hope your wrong about Lenny. He will make mistakes as will our prospects, but I don’t feel he’s been given the support from the board/ceo (sure he was on record saying he wanted experience in the side which is still missing).

Don’t know if its right but i’m less concerned about the league now (it carries little weight in european qualification now) and would like to see how Lenny progresses as a manager, rather than a shield for board policies.

    Hail Hail

  13. Auld paw broon guest in the sportscene studio spouting gibberish saying jacks booking was the same as Charlies, and Hoopers movement was to quick when Jack fouled him ,what a fud

Aye your probably right, what with that Gillian McKeith shouting gardy loo,on every street corner.

  16. Both Charlie and Jack were booked for leaving the field of play.

Paw Broon said he wasn’t in the fans, it was just off the park and still on the grass.

Over the white line is off the park you dithering old goat.

for a change the ref was consistent with that one.

I’m a stone’s throw from Cults Academy if you are ever up there.. let me know. I know most of the Cults academy players as I coached a lot of them over the years..

  19. Yeah, Charlie got booked for the celebration… why let the truth get in the way of a story! Broon has lost the plot, but McLean should have corrected him and stopped him making an erse of himself on national tv. As for his comment on the 2nd yellow its nothing short of pathetic. If he’s done that on London Rd he’s have been arrested..

    I agree wholeheartedly with you.

Getting out is our only hope.

Last night sftb said in one of his posts, when there was a discussion about whether our board would vote to allow the hun to carry on playing in the spl.

He believes that the board will not vote to help them, and if the other clubs do vote to save them, we would be in a position of strength with uefa with the view to getting out due to the system here, and I have to say, it is looking like our best chance of getting away from this sectarian rancid league we are in.

    Whatever, we are still Tims.

  21. feedthebear

Yes ,saw it and voted for St Columbkilles bhoy Bobby Murdoch of course.

    Vmhan who Supports Neil Lennon

Heard about that poor fella who works in the Belfast Bar mate.

There are two taxi depots in King Street where it happened and on a Friday and Saturday night they should be avoided like the plague. It’s a murder picture every weekend, the fights and arguments are mainly over taxis.

The fella is well got about the road i have been told, and i wouldn’t like to be in the shoes of the two drunken lowlifes that attacked him.

Also, never in a million years was it a sectarian incident – the culprits made their escape towards Divis, just random scumbags.

Anyway i wish him a speedy recovery.
