Celtic earned the right to be taken seriously

151

After so many years, so many defeats, we went to Germany, England, then Belgium, on consecutive Champions Group stage away games, unbeaten. This run of form crept up on us. It didn’t look likely after the game immediately preceding this run, a 7-0 rout in Barcelona, but Brendan Rodgers amended the plan and, on the road, he hasn’t looked back.

Extrapolation is dangerous. It is wiser to mistrust the past than to put too much faith in it, but this Celtic team have earned the right to be taken seriously at the Allianz Arena tonight. They will play unburdened with expectations and without fear.

I’ve watched too many of these games with a nervous disposition. Let’s enjoy this one.

Bring it on.

OUR SECOND CQN PODCAST this week, featuring interviews with ex-Celts Alan Stubbs and Chris Sutton, previewing the big games this week against Bayern Munich and Hibs at Hampden on Saturday.

Stubbs gives an insight into Liam Henderson as a player and talks about where his career should go from here.

BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton, who was speaking at the SPFL Betfred League Cup media day, spoke about Celtic’s European challenge in Munich and his former gaffer Gordon Strachan’s departure from Hampden Park.

BT Sport UCL - CS 2

Speaking on behalf of BT Sport, Alan Stubbs also spoke about his regret at leaving Hibs, and looks ahead to the League Cup semi-final between two of his former clubs.

BT Sport is where the best go head to head. Watch Bayern Munich v Celtic exclusively live in the UEFA Champions League on BT Sport ESPN from 7pm tonight & Hibs v Celtic exclusively live in the SPFL Betfred League Cup on BT Sport 1 from 11:15am on Saturday 21st October.

    Very true.

I’ve met Collum a few times and he really is a very nice guy, commited family man and very commited to both his careers. Just a shame he decided to become a referee!!

  2. Crazy u29 game. Johnston best player on park. Henderson looked good also. Basic poor defending cost the boys dearly.

After the return game which we lost 3-0 in Zagreb, Robert Prosnecki spoke of how disappointed everyone was with Celtic’s poor performance. I remember him saying that we should realise that Celtic are everyone in Croatia’s second team. Two years ago, a waiter in our hotel in Dubrovnik had the Celtic crest tattooed on his arm. He told me at breakfast”We beat Motherwell 2-0 last night.”

  8. We all cringe at the memory of black sunday and some, myself included, have never forgiven big Mogga for his role on it. My gripe is more of the inclusion of their captain that day who was on a bossie tae deidco after this game than any other effort or tactic or rather lack of tactics, this player NEVER crossed the halfway line that day. JJ has now fingered him for an ebt of 95 grand, sounds like a bribe tae me.

  9. Am as nervous as a kitten, I can take defeats against the European elite but not hammerings, the Barca & PSG games are haunting my mind at the moment.

Crazy thing to say but I’m more looking forward to the game being over than the game starting,

If we survive the first 15 minutes without conceding an early goal, I might start enjoying myself.

*there was a photie on another site of Spli fans with a banner denouncing poorshow as a traitor and ended with “up the Celts”.

  11. Young Dembele has been off the radar now for some time after a brilliant run in the Hoops this time last season. Obviously a player with a lot of talent could he prove to be the surprise package should he rediscover that kind brilliance to showcase on the big stage in Munich to-night. This could well be his night.

  12. I honestly can’t understand those who want us to park the bus tonight, if we do we lose, nothing surer, playing with a makeshift defence is not the time to shut up shop, we have to go for it, it’s what we do best.

I would rather lose by going for it than sitting back, but that’s just me, we are up against one of the best teams on the planet, go for it and we have a slim chance imo.

  13. I fear the worst tonight, much the same feeling I had before the PSG game. Maybe my subconscious habit of refusing to build us up fearing the fall?

The realist in me remembers (when our group was drawn) thinking we’d do well to get 1 pt from our 4 games against top 2 seeds (and most likely to come in a home game). Getting 3rd place was always my ambition in this group. So expecting us to lose tonight, as bookies odds confirm (and bookies rarely get it wrong!).

Hoping Bayern have a stinker, and we have all the luck needed to come through a daunting task tonight.

  15. CALL ME GERRY. spot on. at the end of the day we play in the spfl until we get out of this hellhole we are always gonna get gubbed by the big teams.but sometimes miracles happen.hail hail.

  16. BH- team i got this morning had Armstrong not Rogic, Armstrong a doubt now, McGregor on stand by seemingly….HH

  17. Gordon, Gamboa, Lustig, Boyata, KT, Brown, Ntcham, Armstrong, Roberts, Sinclair, Griffiths……

  18. Bit of German there?

As I was trying to say, almost game time and the nerves are shredded. A long time ago I was nervous that we may not win, now I just fear a hosing from another quality side.

We will need a footballing miracle to get a draw in my opinion and if the rumours of us having a go are true, I expect a similar score as the youngsters game.

We have two big games coming up where we will need our best players and the big Euro game is the one v Anderlecht. It’s the big one because it should be the one that rubber stamps the progress we are making.

A mate of mine was at a World Cup and wandered among Croats wearing his hoops. A big Croat came up to him and hugged him saying ” I’m so sorry about big Dado. He has joined the protestant team!

He said they were all Celtic daft.

This was confirmed when Croatia played at Hampden a few years ago. Their fans went through our Superstore like a plague of locusts apparently!
