Just seen that on Sky news.Fulham reject £10 million offer from Sheffield Wednesday for Ross McCormack.

Probably a lot already said on the subject of the Green Brigade Banner yesterday. My view is that it was a mistake but the GB are allowed the occasional error amongst their often excellent and occasionally brilliant displays.

I was impressed with the booing by the crowd as the banner continued to be raised after KO;impressed that it was then immediately lowered and impressed again that the crowd cheered the lowering and that that was the end of the matter.

I found the game less entertaining than I normally do and the crowd, too, seemed a bit flat. An Away game at Aberdeen is next on the agenda. That should remove the last vestiges of the Malmo disappointment.

On that game, I am surprised at how little has been said about our disallowed goal and the resulting red card failure.

A well respected poster on here heard it straight from Lenny’s mouth, proof enough for me.

Anyways, I don’t understand all the people who see this as a bad thing, Celtic are only attempting to come into the modern world when it comes to player recruitment, something that has been happening on the continent for donkeys years.

I would have thot that the board lovers would welcome this from their beloved Pedro, I certainly do, with a little adjustment, it’s a superb system, cheaper than throwing money at a manager, then sacking him, and throwing money at the next manager, and on, and on.

Most clubs have a DoF, the coach coaches the players.

If we had a DoF instead of a scout and a CEO who thinks he is a DoF, I would be over the moon.

Not sure about the exact words but on one of the Irish channels on Tuesday night Neil pretty much , in my view, indicated that that was the policy that the club had adopted at his time.

    ———–

It’s no secret our policy sign unknowns then sell them on, Wanyama and Forster were the “shite” at one point but we made money from it.

Just wondering if Lenny ever actually said those words to DD or is it CQN speak??

I more or less agree with you re the mental toughness but have a different view as to the source for our fragility—the support.

It would require a much longer piece than I am willing to do at the moment to examine the desperate need so many Celtic supporters have for victory but that , I believe, is the main reason our players let us down sometimes from a winning position. Other supporters allow their players to be human ; we, in the main, do not.

    Cheerio for now.

You’re welcome sir, you’ve got your hands full with that wee bundle of energy! :-)

I have no problem with yesterday’s banner and I have no problem with anyone saying that they disagree with it.

However, I will take issue with anyone who calls into question the GB’s support of the team because of a banner which stated something many Celtic supporters agree with, the team were gutless in Malmö.

It’s worth noting that the GB then went on to sing in support of the team for 90 minutes.

    How many did the same?

In fact when was the last time the support sang a song at Parkhead that wasn’t started by the GB?

  7. If the players were attacking Johansen at a team meeting, I wouldn’t at all be surprised if Bitton was one of them. He was tearing strips off him during the Caley match. I thought Johansen did very well last season but he has been poor so far this season.

Posted similar about the decision and lack of decision fro the hand ball.

Watching the referee he seemed like a rabbit caught in the headlights and was (imo) listening to the shout from Malmo players and crowd.

It disappointed me that there was little made of his game changing decisions ie error by the Celtic players who had the opportunity a few minutes later when he blew for half-time.

  9. I took an hour out of my day yesterday to drive to CP with some old backpacks and towels etc for the collection. I got there at 12.45. A thoroughly obnoxious steward informed me no such collection was taking place and sent me in my way (the power of the high vis jacket).

    Great point

Seems like many people take to booing the team off the park sometimes.. That would hurt the team a lot more than a silent banner from a group that supposedly has less than 100 people in its membership.

Personally I think their was no need for the banner but it’s done and we move in. Iv no doubt the GB are going to be at every game we play.

Both teams were trained by ex-Celts – Celtic by Neil Mochan and Morton coached and trained by Eric Smith, and Morton had ex-Celt Jim Kennedy at right back and captain. Tony Taylor the substitute was also ex-Celtic, as was outside left Gerry Sweeney

Jock Stein played the same team that had beaten Hibernian 4-0 at the weekend. Morton left their team to the last minute as Laughlin, Gray and Allan had all been fighting injuries.

One of the most powerful Celtic performances by Celtic during Jock Stein’s reign.

Celtic play in green shirts, white shorts and white socks.

Morton played in unfamiliar white jerseys, black shorts and white socks.

A roof was in the process of being built on the traditional Rangers end of the stadium.

Celtic now face Dundee in the final. In the other League Cup semi final Dundee beat St Johnstone 3-1 at Tannadice.

Celtic destroyed Morton with a devastating performance at Hampden despite the Morton team putting up a fight full of heart.

The quality of the goals was outstanding with Hughes’ two goals the pick of the bunch. The first came from a Lennox cross after two Celtic players had consecutively dummied the ball and the other a trademark charge upfield and a ferocious shot to finish.

Preben Arentoft of Morton had the privilege of the game’s best goal with a blockbuster shot on the run.

  13. “Faithful through and through”.What a joke that song is now.As for the GB.They have been fantastic,up until yesterday.Slaughter the board,by all means,if that is how you feel. The team?.Never.Every team, player has bad games. If that entitles you to put on very public displays of abuse directed at them, then sorry,I have been following a different game all these years. What makes it worse,is that, they of all people, should have known how the SMSM would react.Further grist for the mill that all is not well with Celtic, everything across the city is wonderful. Some idiots on here trying to compare it with the “Change for Celts “protest.Excuse me.We are financially solvent, unlike 95%of the teams in Britain. We are sitting top of the league,we have, again,a fantastic chance of a domestic treble,we are in a very attractive EL group.Just like the “Kelly”days.Aye right.

Spoiled bast—s the lot of them.

Quite a few on here falling into the same category.Being led a merry dance by the perpetual negative posters on here, and,as much as they say they dont, reading the insidious, spiteful trash spewed out by our Sevco adoring hacks.

I said the other day,its like a feeding frenzy for sharks.Disgusting and unedifying. When the “Celts for change”was going on,I was proud to be a Celtic fan, proud to be part of it.I never thought I would see the day when our support, and I just dont mean the GB,would disgust and sicken me.

Yesterday, when the team needed a lift,we got a half empty stadium, atmosphere like a morgue,a new signing welcomed in the most lukewarm way,a banner slaughtering the team. This from a support demanding much better signings,CL football as a right, and domination of the Scottish game.If this is your idea of how to accomplish these things, then you are in for one almighty shock.

“Faithful through and through”.I remember when that used to ring true.

  14. I think the banner was correct. When Malmo scored the first goal our heads went down.

On the board matter, that’s more complicated. Apathy is a difficult thing to shake off . Fans want exciting football and heroes, over the last few years both have been in short supply.

Anytime we do get a good player we sell. I don’t have a big problem with this but selling to replace lost CL money is a double hit for fans.

I wonder at the mindset of the provincial club supporter

Often I reach the conclusion that they are the real football fans

    Why?

Not for them 4 in a row titles or doubles and trebles. No marquee signings etc.etc

Maybe the glory of a cup final and even their club colours tied around that old trophy.

Europe is one tie, maybe two. Every ten years or so.

Still they come along ( in ever decreasing numbers)

Then we have Celtic pretty much dominating the game in Scotland. As someone pointed out earlier we have loaded so much silverware since 2000 and even reached a European final.

Still it’s not enough for some and I would be a liar if I denied that I want more, especially in Europe.

Most of us remember the awful feeling of failure in 2002 when an expensively assembled team failed to qualify for CL group stages to Swiss side Basel/Basle.

We were knocked out at the same stage last week. With a group of players that cost a fraction of the 2002 team and most if the current players couldn’t lace their predecessors boots.

Since then We have a constant stream of anguish from the ‘I told you so brigade’.

Guess what, we all feel it.!!!

We operate in circumstances that are fairly unique. We canter to league flags. Players operate in low gears and still win.

When we meet teams in Europe who need to learn to battle for every domestic point to earn the right to play Euro football we come unstuck.

Tuesday night was awful but I have watched Celtic teams play far worse over the years against so called minnows in Europe and get lapped out. Some of those Celtic teams had guys like Dalglish and McGrain playing!

Maybe I don’t have to wonder what it feels like to be the fan of a provincial club after all.

We keep coming back for more because every now and again we build a team that gets us to a Euro final and that my friends in Celtic is worth every second of the pain of the ‘lost’ games.

That 2002 team recovered and went on to do some great things. By 2005 most if them had gone

The 2015 team might not reach the same heights.

I’m already looking forward to the next ensemble

    From antshistory on KDS:

I remember that day. Harold Wilson was emerging from the North British Hotel in Princes Street just as a huge contingent of Celtic fans arrived at Waverley Station after the match. His limo was parked outside and was getting rocked from side to side, and the security guys could do absolutely nothing. Wilson looked really scared, but then the Celtic fans started singing “Haaaarold Wil-son, Haaaarold Wil-son” at the top of their voices and he started smiling and waving. Not sure what happened after that as I got pushed further along Princes Street by the crowd. Great memories!

  21. Morning folks,

Don’t post on here as much as I used to a few years ago. Too much arguing and name calling and not enough respectful debate. Although there are still many fine folks on this site.

However here goes for my take on our current position on and off the park. Like a lot of fans, I think off the park there are a lot of mistakes being made. For me, when the club and fans have been attacked by the MSM at every opportunity the press can find, the club are not vocal enough to counter these lies and half truths. Goes all the way back to the LNS decision and gutless response that the club were “surprised” by the decision. Since then the survival myth by Sevco has grown arms and legs to the point that it’s accepted and commented (by some of our ex players) as fact. You might say what has that got to do with us now, well we were the ones that were wronged mostly by the cheating, and if they can get away with that enormous lie, what is in store in the future for us, what future distortions of the truth and cheating can we expect as the SFA blazers are still mostly in place and ready to revert back to “business as usual” once Sevco or whatever re-incarnation return to the top league.

There is no doubt that the club has been downsizing for years, I appreciate that we are at a big disadvantage from our neighbours down south and have to cut our cloth accordingly. However millions of pounds have been squandered in “projects” fees and wages. We have been knocked out of the champions league qualifiers for the last two years from teams with fewer resources than ourselves.

The most important person at the club in my opinion is the manager. Again going back to downsizing, part of the downsizing in my opinion has been the choice of inexperienced managers. We have suffered because of this initially when they were hired. Hiring Ronny, an inexperienced manager at our level, was in my opinion a cheap option, and we are paying the price for that too. I like Ronny, I like his ideas on fitness and a high tempo game. However you also need to have a sound strategy, good tactics and balanced team.

For me Ronny’s biggest failing is how he sets up his team. Mostly the same, 2 holding midfielders, with a front four, diamond shape, one up front. In my opinion when we press teams it leaves too much of a gap behind the midfield and in front of the defence. His two holding midfielders don’t work effectively because there is too much of a gap. Biton is a fine player in Scotland, but lacks that bit of pace at the top level. In a more compact midfield that works as a closer unit he would not be as exposed, and also the defence would have more cover as well.

The midfield also most of the time, does not work in unison with the attackers, so lots of times the attacker is left on his own up front. When we come up against a good counter attacking team, there are huge gaps in our team from the middle of the par all the way to the defence. Domestically we have been okay as the opposition is not as good, and last season the pace of Virgil and Jason covered up the gaps. With Jason already gone and Virgil likely to be gone by the end of the transfer window, we may well have a huge struggle on our hands domestically. For a team that has much more resources than the rest of the league, that to me is a failure.

If Ronny changes his tactics, gets the midfield more balanced and compact, plays another striker up top, I think the transformation would be stunning.

Some how I don’t see that happening.

This is the market that we are supposed to be involved in looking for a striker.Wish some would get it into their thick heads,it is an almost impossible task.At the same time they demand that the”Wage structure”is not broken. In the real world out there,Man City, are offering more than £50 million, and £200-300,000,per week for De Bruyne.

  23. Those who say the coach has the last word re a player, he does to an extent, when he is given a choice between a couple that have been scouted that fall within the remit, but to suggest that the manager-coach activly scouts them is way off the mark.

For a start, I want the manager-coach coaching the players and not galavanting around scouting players, what’s the point of having a scouting dept if that was the case.

That was the point I made yesterday. The GB’s banner isn’t acceptable but booing the team off or deriding individual players for their performance is by many fans. Disagree with some of what the banner said.I don’t think we were gutless in Malmo although don’t ask me to explain the rather weak performance because I won’t be able to.Maybe we were disjointed? disorganised? Undisciplined?too many not turning up? could be all of these.

  25. We can blame PL, DD, Ronny, the team etc but to me the main issue is that the players are not used to playing decent opposition. Physically, they may be fit, but mentally, they seem off the pace.

How many times on Tuesday did we see a pass being intercepted because the Celtic player didn’t see that there was an opponent in the vicinity?

Going back, it seems amazing that the dead club did so badly in Europe when they were able to sign the likes of Butcher, Steven, Numan, the de Boers, Laudrup, Gascoigne etc. That would be the equivalent now of Terry, Milner, Sneidjer, RvP, Wilshere etc.

They weren’t able to cope with the step up in standard either with a much stronger set of players than we have now.

It all comes down to leaving the SPL – I’m convinced it would be great for the other clubs – imagine April where Hearts, Aberdeen, Dundee Utd even Sevco all have the chance of the title.

The EPL isn’t going to take us and there seems no appetite for an Atlantic League – we need some creative thinking e.g.

Offer to play in each of these leagues for one season – Holland, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark

    Join the US MLS.

Set up a team at a really low level in England – it might take 15 years to get into the EPL – but we could still play in Scotland in the meantime.

Otherwise, we’ll be having this conversation every year.

  26. At the same time,Everton are knocking back £30 million for Stones.A fairly decent CH,but who had really heard or noticed him before. This is the world we live in now.

Great post, Brown yesterday was firing into challenges against Malmo he looked lost that’s not a tactical issue or a manage issue or a board issue, it’s a player problem.

We can’t leave Scotland that’s not going to happen though we can buy a non league/lower league team in England then rebadge them as Celtic. It’s the only way we’ll be able to grow as a club.
