After a credible 1-0 defeat in Paris, we faced PSG at Celtic Park in 1995 with hope of proceeding, but the French taught us a lesson in European football that night, despite playing Paul Le Guen and Stephan Mahe in defence.
That Celtic team had the gestation of what would become a wonderful attacking outfit. Andy Thom and Pierre Van Hooijdonk would soon be followed by Jorge Cadette and Paulo Di Canio. Despite all the great teams we’ve seen since, we still talk about that Celtic side fondly. Of course, they didn’t win anything.
Irrespective of their wonderful talent and attacking balance, successful teams are not built by adding yet-more striking prowess, they a function of coordination from the first to the last line.
What do you do to improve your team after buying the most expensive player, a striker, in history? Well, PSG bought the second most expensive player in history, also a striker. They have a proverbial cast of thousands when it comes to fêted strikers, who will score lots of goals and destroy many teams this season.
But they will not win the Champions League, because there will be someone with lesser strikers but a better balance, who will knock them out.
Celtic players will be well prepared for tonight. It will be an exhausting evening, but they have a punchers’ chance against the aristocrats of Paris. Boys will become men, tactics refined, new levels reached. We will be a cohesive athletic function, hoops will blend together under floodlights. I’d take a point, but who knows…….?
Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have given us two tickets for the visit to Ibrox on 23 September to raffle for Mary’s Meals. You know the script:
Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat a school meal each day because of the money raised by CQN’ers.
You are improving lives, educating a generation in some of the most deprived locations in the world. School attendance has increased an average of 30%, literacy and numeracy skills improve. Life-long opportunities are enhanced.
To enter the raffle, answer this question:
Which Belgian team will Celtic face in this season’s Champions League?
Please donate a minimum of £5 to this MyDonate page. Then forward your confirmation email with your answer in the SUBJECT LINE to celticquicknews@gmail.com
CLosing date will be advertised later. Many thanks to you and Intelligent Car Leasing.
These are special times; enjoy tonight.
CQN went behind the scenes with BT Sport at Hamilton on Friday evening and this is all covered in the new CQN Podcast which is out today and includes an interview with Chris Sutton…

RIOSKORRIE.
You might be winning too much, bookies don’t like that.
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/sep/11/inside-the-online-bookies
There are loads of links from there, glad I only bet low. They’ll only take your bet if you go high if you’re a loser.
Mind, the number of bookies now online,if you wanted to bet£2k,it would only need you to put a score into 100-a fraction available-and that is a problem itself.
Too many people touting for business,so many surprised losers.

A podium on your birthday and the match tonight.

Thanks for the feedback folks , hoopy birthday to all having a double celebration tonight :) ;)
Nice tweet from Rab Douglas for tonight’s game
All the best to Celtic tonight, best champions league venue ever , give my regards to Motta.
Motta was the the Barca player, in 2004, foolish enough to have a go at Bobo at half time as the players went up the tunnel. Rab ended up getting sent off for the above incident along with Thiago ‘Jake La’ Motta.

I was hoping that Celtic would have let the ST Mirren have 1 or 2 of our Incredible youngsters.
*several years ago I had a conversation with a then Celtic Director who during the course of this talk informed me that apart from deidco only 2 other teams refused to deal with us. They were Dundee, well known adversaries of us going back as far as the “relegation” battle of 1948 when their players were on huge bonuses to win that day in a nothing game for them in an attempt to send us down to the 2nd Division.
And there were other occasions when they were disingenuous to us and our support no later than a couple of Boxing Days ago when they accused us of starting the worst riot since the 70s,
As for selling players tae us, WGS and Stevie Murray come to mind, both coveted by the Big Mhan, nae chance, they would rather sell them tae the sheep. I know we have signed Tommy Coyne from them but are there any others; Scott Allan incidentally was a loan out.
As for the buddies, the club that sold tottie beck tae them allegedly for zoning rights in the Paisley area, similar stats are there, both Franks, McAvennie and McGarvey who played for them came tae us from other clubs. We did acquire Sammy Wilson fae them, and oh what a signing he was, but he was a free.
There are other clubs out there that are NOT exactly Celtic friendly, the templars and Leith souptakers come tae mind as do FCM but they at least engage in the transfer market with us and we loan them players for development. The latter incidentally have sold us 4 of the best goal scorers we have hade in the last 40 or so years, aye even including wanker (no sp mistake either) but as for the 2 who are the subject of this post, I widnae gie them the time of day.

The PSG team that beat Celtic 0-3 at Parkhead in 1995 was one of the best footballing sides I have seen we just could not get the ball off them the Celtic support watched with admiration that night.Tonight is a chance to get our revenge it wont be easy and the MSM virtualy give us no chance but for me that is when we are at our best when folk rule us out.Come on you Bhoys in Green. H.H.
“Pretty sure we won The Scottish Cup”
Bobby,
Aye the year before to get into the ecwc but not another one that millennium.

“But they will not win the Champions League”
P67,
It’s a hard tourney to win but the last time they beat us in Europe they went on to win.
I think it could be a long night for us tonight but wonderful things happen at Celtic park on euro nights.

Good evening, friends.
3 hours to go. Just 3 hours.
And Mini’s game v PSG on BT at 5. Miller and Aitcheson play so probably won’t feature in the later game ;-)
There’s at least 2 players who will feature tonight for whom we should give thanks and credit to (I’ll be behind the goal) Ronny –
1. In our fist Europa League group game 2 years ago I remember standing at CQN Corner and learning that Kieron had kept his place (pretty sure he’d only played a couple of league games before that as Izzy was injured). The rest is history.
2. Ronny it was who brought in Patrick Roberts on loan. Patrick of course missed that sitter at Hampden in that semi final where our loss on penalties ultimately led to Ronny’s departure.
A song for Ronny tonight would be wonderful.
McGraininspain,
Nice to “see” you back.
Connaire, many congratulations.
You are surely the Father of the Blog.
Off to watch the youngsters.
Many Happy Returns to Connaire12……still getting excited at 78 :-) hope the Bhoys give you an extra special present this evening.
And Happy birthdayversary to mr and mrs FrannieB67.
And wishing everyone lucky enough to be in Paradise tonight one of those very, very special nights under the floodlights.
A Song for Ronny , can’t argue with that and I’m sure WITS would be delighted to oblige. :)))))
Really buzzing about the game. Providing we play to our full potential I will be happy.
Hail hail to all. The journey continues.
‘Mon Maloney’s Minis!
Ohhhhhhhh Dadddddy take me to Paradise
So pleased for big Jozo.
