Central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager

Match 31 in Celtic’s domestic season: Motherwell at home, 29 wins, one draw and no defeats behind them. It all looks straightforward tomorrow. Right?

A reminder, if needed, that while Motherwell shipped seven goals during the week, St Mirren did the same to Gordon Strachan’s Celtic before knocking us out the Scottish Cup a week later.

It was also Motherwell, at Celtic Park, who ended Scottish football’s longest winning run of league games in 2004. Celtic had just beaten Barcelona but were held by Motherwell to halt the run at 26 consecutive victories.

Runs like this often end against teams with nothing in their locker but desperate defending. You’ll see that from the visitors tomorrow, whose players will surely have had a word with each other about collective responsibility.

Take nothing for granted. Celtic have worked hard to get into this situation in the league but they will have to work just as hard to maintain momentum.

How does Brendan do that? I suspect by shuffling the pack again. We have genuine competition across the team. The central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager in case he drops them and they don’t get another sight of the pitch for weeks.

Full backs feeling a little weary late in the game? Don’t show it, Emilio and Cristian are ready and waiting. James Forrest and Patrick Roberts are both delivering at the highest standard of their careers, otherwise they would not be considered.

While Leigh Griffiths is injured, Moussa Dembele will be confident he will get the opportunity to score three consecutive hat-tricks, surely an unprecedented achievement. It’s only Scott Brown and Scott Sinclair who can be confident of being included when fit.

The former, because he is captain and leader of the team, the latter because he has had the most profound impact on Scottish football this season, unequivocally Player of the Year.

You are looking forward to seeing these guys do their stuff tomorrow, I can tell.

“The Celtic Board will never come out and say they back the OF, and in some respects they probably dont …. but for me, right now, our Board (following DD, to whom PL and BR seem to report) seems to view the Sevco as a necessary part of the success of Scottish football…and so, our business model.”

Mike, I believe when the board think it is to the advantage of Celtic to speak out, they will.

(I do realize they may never think that)

“…and, while I may disagree with DD’s conclusion, I at least respect that he had the courage to say what he felt …. at least that way, it is out in the open, and can be debated and discussed ….”

He also said he thinks that Celtic will be in the EPL in the near future . . .maybe that’s why Scotland needs

a strong Rangers, because Celtic won’t be here ( would that it were so )

“PL and the Board have taken a different approach, and not given the fans and shareholders the courtesy of keeping us informed of their views, so that their views could be debated and discussed”

I think that is the correct way to go MIT. Either only the board knows or the whole world knows.

Not knowing has not curtailed discussion in any significant way.

Hope no GFSers now feel they can’t pick Sevco, that is shocking !!!!

but not as shocking as the Ines who had no shame in the previous weeks :-)

  11. GFTB – just as long as the CQN Couponeers remember that unwritten rule.

Reminds me of a time about 3 years ago when that week’s CQN coupon included Hearts, Chelsea, Milwall….

  12. STV showcasing Eriskay in Alan Cummings Edge of Scotland programme. Proudly wearing the Hoops as he plays football No doubt he is on the banned list now. His team mates were called Gerry and Sean, the unseen Fenian hand at work again.

Rock Garden, Maestros, Panama Jax, The Warehouse, Ultrateque, Sylvester’s, Fury’s – all bring back memories of great bands and great nights.

I’m sure as BRTH said that if some of us haven’t met, we have certainly rubbed shoulders in the 80’s in Glasgow!

  14. Long shot here – question for the music folks – anyone remember a series from the late 80’s called ‘new country’? Kirsty MacColl sang ‘don’t come the cowboy’, the wonderstuff did ‘golden green’, the nitty gritty dirt band, the desert rose band were on it. And here’s the question – there was a band on it who I think were from Edinburgh and sang a couple of songs that I really liked. Cannot remember their name or the songs! Country/ folk style stuff.

I’ve searched YouTube to no avail.

This is Kirsty maccolls contribution to the show I am pretty sure –

    Tobago Street …

as others onhere have pointed out, the business Board model works for … well, businesses… and while Celtic PLC is a business … Celtic is more than a PLC ….

so, to say that the Board will speak out when they think it is to the advantage of Celtic to speak is a very complicated and loaded statement … are you using the Board and Celtic synonumously? As I have said, the Board is but one aspect of Celtic…. think Dulles, S.J.

the reality it that many Board’s act in the best interest of the majority shareholders, as opposed to the best interest of the Company, per se….

I would wager that Celtic were (not sure of the current status) more likely to get a move (to England or otherwise) as part of an OF duo … this would benefit mostly one person …. DD….. but small shareholders less so ….

so, did DD have a vested interest in not wanting Sevco to go out of business? I would hazard a guess yes. But was it in the best interest of the Club? That may be a different answer.

I agree that, even as a PLC (as opposed to a private company), some things of necessity need to be kept quiet… but, from my perspective, that is not the situation here …

Not knowing must, by its nature have curtailed discussion … discussion , from the latin discure (to investigate) suggests a minimal amount of information and an effort to uncover the truth … it may not have curtailed idle speculation (like mine), but that is much less helpful than informed discussion.
