Chasm, but Celtic should have done much better

460

For all of our dominance yesterday, you have to think there is room for considerable improvement. Passing in the first half was frequently poor, shooting throughout the game was invariably off target, and when we managed to keep it down and between the sticks, the keeper was able to read the shot. Gilks played well, but the truth is we flattered him.

Moussa Dembele grabbed all the headlines with his back-heel-flick-nutmeg-winning-goal, but I spent much of the game debating whether it was time he was rested. Against Newco last month, he held the ball up and linked play, while finding and exploiting space. Yesterday his linking was poor and he seldom found space.

The incisiveness we enjoyed watching as recently as the outing against Manchester City, was missing against Gladback on Wednesday and at Hampden yesterday.

There were also enormous positives. Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko were absolutely critical on Celtic’s grip on the game. Their positioning – when we were in possession – kept the ball flowing. They both gave us playmaker performances, and they didn’t miss a beat defensively either.

Again, just as on Wednesday, it didn’t work for Nir Bitton. When we play out from central defence like this the deep-lying playmaker role is crucial. He need to create space for us to move the ball forward, while he becomes an auxiliary defender as our full backs are so high up the field.

Stuart Armstrong came on and played higher up-field than Bitton and managed to put the squeeze on Newco.

The game reminded me of the League Cup semi-final two years ago, when Celtic subjugated an impotent Newco without scoring the volume of goals their superiority deserved. There was a chasm between the teams, which makes my belief that Celtic can play a lot better all the more interesting. Conversely I suspect that was a high water mark for Mark Warburton’s team.

The portents are good that he believes that game was a sign of progress.

As for Craig Thomson, that was self-evidently not good enough.

Yeah, a bad day that scarred the mind.

Ye know what,….whenever, over the years that I have seen the N. I. troubles being reported on the tv and ye would see the republicans rioting / fighting back etc,….the scenes always reminded me – to an extent – of the Cellic end at ibrox on 7 /01/ 1978. It wasn’t just the ‘usual’ break-in that would occur during those games in those days.

There were only a few break-ins of peace at the ole Cellic end on ‘that’ day.

Strangely, when Mr Stein would come over behind the goals and usher all the young fans back onto the terracing’s, it would sprrk off the most amazing renditions of YNWA that today’s atmosphere’s at the games couldn’t touch, magical sparkle’s on the darkest of day’s.

As someone who obviously bled green and white, what are your feelings on the current board? Do you feel that they represent the average fan? Is it different from your playing days?

Thoughts on the zombies? Did you enjoy playing Rangers? Do you still enjoy watching the games against the zombies? In your mind, is the league better with the zombies in it? or should they have been consigned to the dustbin when they were liquidated?

Break ins, I hope have to be honest and day that phrase had left my memory, now it’s all flooding back, they would call it crowd disorder now.

YNWA. Almost appears out of fashion with the Celtic support now, we have the contrived, but impressive, version at Champions league games but no/ hardly ever, any spontaneous outbursts any longer. Which is quite sad. However we know have Grace which I love.

Tommy is still playing and he is very fit, but he’s not as good as I am. I’ve played a few wee amateur games with him. He actually played for Celtic once against Rangers in a charity match. We were a wee bit short on players – like the CQN Fives last week when I was all ready to show up – and it was the highlight of his footballing life to have worn the Hoops.

On the 1977 penalty. Yes my mind was made up. I knew where it was going and that no-one was stopping it. I hit it with exactly the right amount of pace and direction. We did a penalty kick competition down at Seamill the day before and I won it.

Kenny had missed the penalty in the game before the final so was a bit unsure. He was kidding on to the manager the night before the final that “Kipper would be on the penalties” – although he was joking!

Jock said I don’t know what you two are talking about. I wish it was me having the honour to take the responsibility in a Scottish Cup Final for Celtic against our greatest rivals.

I took this words to bed with me and in the morning at the pre-match meal I told Kenny that there would be no doubts and I would take the penalty. He said let’s see what happens but I said no I am taking it.

We were still surprised to get one against them! Derek Johnstone used two hands on the goal line – BBC Scotland and ITV were both broadcasting the game – the only time they both had the final live. Archie Macpherson said that all the pressure was on the Rangers goalkeeper Stewart Kennedy – which was a jock.

However on ITV Parick Timothy Crerand was on and he was the co-commentator, unlike BBC he called it as a clear penalty and recognised the pressure was on the kicker. It was years later that I watched these two versions. BBC Scotland seemed very bluenosed on reflection.

    Good question.

I heard Chris Sutton’s exchange with him and I felt a wee bit sorry for Johnstone to be honest. He’s just a blue nose, that team and they hit rock bottom. It is his job to try to defend them and he knew little or nothing about the financial crooks and so on.

I answered the question about difficult opponents.

The European I’d choose is Boavista in Porto – we drew 0-0 over there. Sean Fallon was in charge as Big Jock was recuperating. The day before the game the team were walking along the beach with Sean. He stopped us and decided to give us the team tactics there and then. He talked about Alvez who took the corners, free kicks etc and the penalties and was their best player.

Someone asked what number was he Sean? Sean replied that he didn’t know but he only knew that he always wore black gloves in memory of his father who was a famous Portuguese international who also played for Boavista.

On the night we played very well and thanks to Sean’s scouting Peter Latchford knew where it would go (this was before the TV facilities modern clubs have to help goalies so Sean was ahead if his time!) and save it.

To add to our joy we each were given a bottle of Port from the city of Porto which we all enjoyed on the plane back home.

Mark Warburton: Rangers must avoid reckless spending to close gap on Celtic

MARK Warburton admits Rangers are lagging behind Celtic both on and off the pitch but says it would be wrong to rush through a rescue package.

The Ibrox boss has faced further questions over the club’s direction in the wake of their 1-0 defeat to the Hoops in Sunday’s BetFred Cup semi-final.

Former Gers manager Graeme Souness claims the Englishman has not had the backing he needs from chairman Dave King’s board, and reckons it could take his old side five years to close the gap on their rivals.

Warburton was in no mood to disagree with Souness but stressed there is no way the Light Blues faithful would stand for spending another half a decade in the Parkhead outfit’s shadows.

However, given the club’s recent financial woes, the former City trader also stressed that spending recklessly was not the answer.

Warburton said: “Football is a game of opinions and Graeme is a very knowledgeable football man, steeped in experience who knows all about Glasgow too. You have to respect his opinion.

“There is a financial gap that exists at this moment in time. That’s clear for everybody to see.

“They (Celtic) have a squad packed with international players. They are in the Champions League this year and are getting all the benefit of that in terms of playing experience and financial income.

“We recognise and respect that. We then have to sit down and decide how do we close it? How do we improve our squad? Can we invest astutely and wisely?

“We have to set aggressive targets to try and close the gap. If our supporters can see that we will be in a good place.

“I read some ludicrous comments this morning about how my City background should make me aware of the power of financial muscle. I’m not a rocket scientist but I’m not a fool.

“Of course you recognise the implications of a rival club with a strong financial base at this moment in time. The worst thing Rangers could do is spend recklessly to try to close that gap too quickly.

“We know the gap is there. But what is also important is the target setting so we know what we have to do in what time frame in what gap.

“The worst thing we could do is not build strong foundations here, and from the chairman and the board down the club is very clear what we have to do.

“I guess Graeme is acknowledging the gap with his experience. It has to be shorter period [than five years] in my opinion. I’m not ignoring Graeme’s opinion but our job has to move quicker.

“Would the Rangers fans accept five years? I don’t think so. I hope they know we’re on a project and on a road. Hopefully we’re making good progress down that road, but they need to see that progress.”

  26. KEVJUNGLE

Thank you for your kind words.

Jock was raging like the rest of us. We were cheated, but it would have played into their hands to walk off. Jock understood that while we players didn’t. That was the thing about him, he was usually a few steps ahead of everyone else.

I talked about that game earlier but there are loads of examples. We had to get 2 ahead to be sure because when we were as good as we could be we’d be untouchable by grey areas from referees which could lose us the game.

There were an awfully of bad referees at that time but Jock had their cards marked.

One game against Hearts, the both first teams were playing but it was reserve game I think. Ref had a terrible game, he continually made decisions against us including a sending off for nothing.

At half time Jock grabbed the referee for a word. Jock tore into him so much so that the guy was crying his eyes out. He was a disgrace, he was cheating and he was doing it because it was Celtic. In the second half the guy refused to get involved in anything – he was gone. He never came through as a top referee after that.

JPR Gordon, Davidson bad bad referees.

What total drivel being spouted by Paul S and Alison H. Apparently there is a ‘media conspiracy’ to cover up Rangers financial status. With Sky Sports, and the Murdoch rag top ‘The Sun’, and also BBC Sportscene, being well recognised as branches of the Celtic Supporters Club, where is this nonsense about ‘establishment’ coming from. It is obvious the Celtic support sect repeating the big lie often enough has the desired effect on people like Paul and Alison. Because the media don’t invent stories they want to hear, they claim some kind of cover up. Reality is, we have seen the tax authorities pursue Rangers, but be strangely silent on Celtic owners and past management being involved in what has been described as offshore money laundering operations via Panama. Celtic are obviously now the true ‘establishment’ club, being protected by their political benefactors. Or have I missed anyone on Sportscene demanding an investigation into Celtic owners and management tax arrangements?

All those involved with Celtic and Rangers and other football clubs who used the Film Financing Scheme ARE being pursued and will, quite rightly, have to pay back what they owe.

Unfortunately for your argument, they all (The Celtic and the Rangers and the other team’s players) did this as private citizens with their own money. It has nothing to do with Celtic plc or Rangers clumpany or any other team as once the club pays them, they are free to do whatever they like with it, within the law. Neither Celtic nor rangers are culpable for any individual tax evasion or avoidance carried out by the individual as an individual.

However, the old dead Rangers were culpable in procuring and persuading players to adopt a tax evasion scheme for their payments ON THE BOOKS of the club. Both the DOS and The EBT schemes were illegally implemented and are , as it stands, subject to having to be repaid.

It is such a simple and easy distinction to note that it is hard to believe anyone could conflate the two unless they were actually trying to muddy the water.

I hope every last penny owed to us is paid back by those who used schemes which were illegal. If not they should be declared bankrupt and suffer the shame, regardless of who they played for.

The Old Rangers EBT and DOS schemes remain uniquely as the only instance of a football financial entity indulging in a below the table, undeclared form of payment. Thankfully, now the prosecution of the case has moved beyond the protective environment of Scotland, the distress call will have less traction and the old club, and the players officials and agents who bought into it, will suffer penalties beyond those from which they profited.

And an asterisk of shame will be attached to every title and trophy that was bought during this period that shamed our game.

Meantime, a succession of spivs destroy a major club while most people stand idly by. Unless something real, tangible and major happens within the next 6 months, Rangers are gone. Forever. And are you sure that all Rangers fans are alert to “BS” when it comes to those who some have supported (Whyte, Green, King) and those most appear to exonerate (David Murray). Somebody needs to hold the Board to account – who else has the access our embedded, compliant media have?

Can only agree with you on the absence of a strong independant media. The pro Celtic bias that is built in to televised football and the most popular print media is highly detrimental to fair, balanced reporting.

What does this current board have to be held to account for exactly? Not Whyte, Green, Murray but this current board? Seriously I’d be fascinated to know what it is this compliant media is hiding from us? If you can tell me with reference to a credible source then I will engage with you but at the moment you sound like a loony conspiracy theorist.

I am sure there are many unfounded rumours about the finances of the Ibrox club.

However, from where do you draw any confidence that there is sufficient finance available to maintain and run a modern stadium and training complex, far less pay for Top 6 SPFL players, far less consider the possibility of any further player spending, reckless or not?

Where is the audit that shows any relationship between income earned and all the various financial payments that a club must make to keep going. The finances of the modern version of Rangers makes no more sense than the finances of the dead Rangers club did.

Undisclosed borrowings should worry you. Broken promises should worry you. Lateness with due payments should worry you. A transfer policy that emphasises older expensive players should worry you. The selling off of revenue streams in order to keep the short term facade going should concern you.

It serves you no use whatsoever to whistle bravely in the dark because it is Celtic fans who point this out to you. You owe a duty to yourself and your offspring who want to follow a version of Rangers to ensure that spivvery is absent from your club. Far better and more honourable to start a “clean” Rangers, in the same way Wimbledon and Man U fans decided, than to join in and collude with the siren song that it can all be like it was before. Just a wee bit more over-investment and we’ll be back in the Champions League. Such a sweet poisonous lie.

I fear your current club is heading for, at least, Administration again. And the wilful inaction of all its fans who react to warnings of what is happening with cries of “obsession”, “trolling”, etc; are doing more harm than good. The clock has been ticking too long, perhaps. The jackals may have stripped the carcass too bare. But don’t ever say you were never warned.

Thank God, we had Fergus to save us from David Murray’s vindictive banking friends. Thank God we had fans who listened and did not accept the sweet lies of “Cambuslang”. Thank God we are not an establishment club and will only earn and achieve by our own efforts with no helping hands.

Hi Andy, so, are you a Hun?

Everybody get’s asked when they first post, it would be rude not to.

I was at both the Motherwell(OG) game, and the game that followed, Hibs 0-1 with Joe Craig scoring a peach, thanks for that, being carried on shoulders, I was 10, coming up Leith Walk was one of my greatest childhood memories.

When Jock Stein was, ehm, moved upstairs, what did the players think?

Shameless repost to an unanswered question.

And WC, I know how easy it is to miss one:-)

I have said for some time that the ref yesterday is a godsend for the blazers at the sfa, he can control the game to a T, blow up when we are in good attacking positions, when we put a ball into a danger area, when our player jumps for the ball, foul to them, when their player jumps for the ball, foul to them, he is a master at disrupting the flow of the game if we are in control, he is a cheat, pure and simple.

If you’re mum was running Rangers then they would never have gone bust!

Jock was treated shabbily on his departure.I was captain of the side at the time and that is my firm memory. In light of the unbelievable success he and he alone was responsible for, in fact if it wasn’t for his input we wouldn’t have the club we have today and neither Rangers if you think about it!!!

He was a passionate Celtic supporter. He cared deeply for the fans and we were reminded on a weekly basis that the supporters were Celtic football club.

He did miss it by the way! He said you should be here!
