Confidence and belief, only delivery to come

278

There will be little Ronny Deila doesn’t know about Molde. His confidence ahead of tonight’s game will be based on a genuine belief that Celtic are the better team, that the game plan is right for the occasion, and that his players are ready.

As a group, they need to perform to the mark they are capable of. Most importantly, they need to harvest the regret for the points and progress they’ve let slip away already during this season’s European campaign. A win, a good defensive performance, and if possible, a clean sheet, will go a long way towards setting up the second half of the season.

My expectation is that we’ll get it right.

Best wishes to Johan Cruyff, who let it be known today he is fighting lung cancer. He deserves to be mentioned alongside Pele and Maradona as one of the greatest players to have graced a football field. I spoke to Tommy Gemmell last year about the greats he’d played against. Eusebio was a phenomenon but Tommy was clear: he had nothing on Cruyff.

It’s 24 years since Johan stopped smoking but although quitting quickly brings mortality benefits, the experts tells us it takes 40 years of abstention before the likelihood of catching cancer reaches the same levels of non-smokers – a clear call to action, if you’re in need of one.

That team might be short of pace for an out ball, but with Forrest injured and GMS struggling for form,I’m happy enough.

    Three points,please.

I take it Janko is injured.

Would have been good to have on the bench at least.

    Hey ho.

  5. 30 bob on Big Efe to be tonight’s hero with a goal* at any time. A rather generous 15/1.

    Excellent choice Ronny.

Bench not as strong as usual.

  8. its not that we normally lose games like tonight’s agains Northern European (or alpine) opposition away from home that bothers me so much, for example Barcelona, Juve and, in fact many Latin sides don’t travel up there so well- ok sure they do come away with one snecht or a draw or the likes and they don’t exactly spray the ball about with guile and flair either.

    It’s all very business like.

    Us?

We usually get taught a footballing lesson.

And it’s that which bothers me, troubles me. Angers me. Fustrates me.

    0-3 etc.

    please not again tonight, ffs.

For those of us who reside abroad and have purchased premium Celtic tv, at £179 a season, the news is that the game is only being transmitted as a re-run at 11pm UK time, about as useful as a random episode of easterners from 1995.

Anyway, let’s see, lets see if we can beat this mob.

    C’mon Celtic.

  10. Usual suspects in hiding ahead of kick off. One or two have slipped in of course. A good result tonight will keep them off the blog.

GEORDIEMUNRO. I would have played the same defence that kept a clean sheet against Motherwell but what do I know.In Ronny and Johnny I trust. H.H.

  12. Don’t know what to think about tonight, been running about Cumbria today, quick visit to gym then a bite to eat…just saw team.

Happy enough with team, sort of picked itself and the opposition will be confident and go straight for our centre backs. Tonight , they need to stand big and strong, just hope we don’t go two up again.

    ‘Mon the Hoops!

  14. Woo hoo. Was supposed to be boarding a flight with an 8.05 take off landing in Glasgow at 9.30.

So would have missed the whole game.

Happily the flight is delayed an hour. Will be able to follow the first half. Can I convince them to delay another hour?

A clean sheet and I’ll be happy.

  15. Sitting in the pub – was quietly confident, nerves now kicking in – 3 points tonight is all that matters – will take a last minute Molde own goal to b honest – but hope we play smartly & with some style ;-))

No silly mistakes and we should prevail.

Welcome Carlton to the best club on the planet.

  17. Sorry to hear about Cruyff. Saw him in his second spell at Ajax in the 2-2 game at Paradise. He hit a beautiful 30 yard cross into the box from wide on the left with the outside of his right foot. Remember that as a wow moment. We went to fir park on the Saturday and I thought this’ll be easy after playing Ajax. Think we scored 7!

  19. Find it hard to understand why Jozo & Scott Allan were brought out to Norway, obviously they were not going to feature so why bring them. OK Team bonding might be a valid reason but I would have thought a few extra days in Lennoxtown and maybe they could play some part at the week-end and give some of to-nights squad a break.

Anyhow it’s a strong team tonight, only issue would be either Efe or Blackett. Efe has got the nod and he is going to have a storming game. You read it here first.

  20. Joe,

Dunno how we managed a draw that night. We got battered.

A fantastic game to watch for a neutral,no doubt. But I sure needed my pint after it!

  22. Lustig/Commons down the right a no-brainer (although Efe behind Commons perhaps even better), and Brown/Bitton centre mid the other natural choice.*

Howevah… Izzy/Armstrong doesn’t inspire, while Johansen behind Griffiths gives us 2 players liable to lose possession with alarming frequency, despite the latter’s goal threat (Europe not so much). As for Boyata/Ambrose, of all the centre back pairings, why them? 5 points from 9 thus far, and they are indeed poor together.

    Dropped points.

I’d be more surprised if they hadn’t travelled.

Simunovic is in a new country and Allan will barely know his team mates.

Bonding will be invaluable, not to mention two days training with first team under the beady eye of the entire first team set up.
