Contagion from omnishambles, welcome Brendan

664

Let’s be clear about this, there are Celtic fans who believe we need a club called Rangers to survive in the manner which we’ve all become accustomed to over the last couple of decades. That without them, we will wither on the vine.

Some of this is correct. In the years following the liquidation of Rangers we lost TV, commercial, mechanise and season ticket income. We play in a league with significantly less competition, which blunts players’ edge and makes Celtic Park a less attractive place to play or be a spectator.

The important question for Celtic fans is what do they actually want from their club? I’ll cope when we were only a few points ahead of Aberdeen, or getting knocked out of the League Cup by Ross County, while being eliminated from Europe by increasingly obscure teams. I’ll still be there supporting my team.

I accept that not everyone will, some of us want the edge of your seat tension – and that’s all right. But I’d ask anyone who pines for the old days to consider the omnishambles of a football team we glimpsed over the weekend. There was no wonder era in the past when we benefited from a great rivalry without destructive contagion.

They were never good for us. Whatever about Celtic is dependent on them is not worth having.

This afternoon we welcome our new manager, Brendan Rodgers, to Celtic Park for the first time. This morning I recalled Ricky Fulton’s words in the video clip below, “It only remains for me to welcome you to the club, Brendan.” A different club, of course, but there’s a morality tale within.

“Having been told that PL was not involved in the selection process of Brendan, why then did Brendan ‘gush’ about PL’s persuasiveness ?”

    ==========================================================================

Is it just possible he was telling the truth , Kevin ?

Mind you , that would mean giving credit to P.L. and , for some , that`s anathema.

Strangely , the Dermot seems to have been rehabilitated .

Maybe he cares about Celtic after all.

    Who`d have thunk it ?

  2. Good morning CQN

Class statement from Hibernian FC which contained important elements within it, the contrast from the Triggers broom FC statement is startling obvious, Hibernians has been written calmly, intelligently and asks all the correct questions, triggers broom FC statement is written by a dangerous lunatic trying to flame sectarian tensions

The SFA must ensure unlike the LNS commission it is FREE to investigate ALL events surrounding events at the cup final without fear or favour, clearly Hibs in asking for these important elements have seen to many whitewashes at the SFA whitehouse

    http://www.hibernianfc.co.uk/news/6529

A Police-led criminal inquiry is underway into events at Hibernian’s historic Scottish Cup win over Rangers at the weekend. The Scottish FA has also launched its own Independent Commission. The Club welcomes the announcement of the Commission which should have the widest ranging terms of reference.

The Independent Commission is to look into all aspects of the staging and management of the Final. That is right and proper. Everyone involved will want to know what lessons can be learned.

Hibernian FC will co-operate fully with the Independent Commission in every way it can and the Commission must be allowed to run its course and reach its own conclusions without fear or favour.

Mcghee will show BR how “not to get mugged”?

In the same way that he’s not been mugged when conceding , this season,

    3 v Morton

    3 v Ross C

    3 v Hamilton

    6 v Hearts

    4 v Aberdeen

    7 v Celtic

That type of defensive genius we can do without.

On a more personal level, hope yer full of the joys that recovering health brings my friend.

  4. Not at all a fan of PL but Brendan definitely indicated that a big part of the reason he is here was the promised support from Peter , as well as Dermot.

I’ve said on here many times, until 2013 PL carried out a Vg job. The last few years not so.

In the last few weeks he’s played a blinder. Credit the man when due.

Whether or not he’s been ‘realigned’ by DD, I’ve no idea, and frankly it matters not. He’s ( for whatever reasons) managed to unify the support almost totally, and we go into 2016/17 with optimism and hope in our hearts at an unprecedented level v recent years.

  6. Paddy Power comments yesterday ( well, his advertising folks) will see a few Bhoys closing accounts today no doubt. Not me, I closed my account with him 5 weeks ago.

Humorous attempt no doubt but still won’t go down too well with a lot of supporters.

Not totally disagreeing Twists but i read into Brendans comments that the conversations that Brendan had with Dermot detailing what his freedoms were are importantly convincing for him in taking the job, he implied i believe that PL backed up all that Dermot was promising and was very supportive of Brendans new role, just my perception on what was said yesterday

  8. Lionroars

Oh you could well be right bud, but as I alluded to, whatever the reasons are that have brought us to where we are, I’m not too bothered now. Can’t remember waking up so happy for 4 days in a row for a long time.:-)

I’m actually more concerned now that perhaps, just perhaps, a lot of bhoys are expecting CL football this season coming up.

I think respectability in the EL would be a good start. Naturally I’m hoping and praying for CL but maybe just a bridge too far this time around?

A nice draw would help obviously.

  9. Paddy Power

Mind you, Paddy is balanced in his wise cracks.

In December someone tweeted ” sort out you odds Paddy, Warburton won’t leave the best team in Scotland to join Fulham”

    His reply?

    “When did Warburton join Celtic:-)

Now we are in total agreement, no matter who we got in as managerhe was facing a massive hurdle with the time frame between the start of pre season training and C/L qualifiers, a combination of elements such as fitness, new playing tactics and strategy and getting to know the personalities of a new management team may as you allude to see us not making it, history at this juncture in a new management team hints at failure on the European stage, we live in hope

  11. Good morning friends from sun kissed, clear skied, couldn’t be happier East Kilbride ;-)

  12. I’ve mailed 4 bookmakers to ask for odds on Celtic hitting 12 goals or more past Sevco in league games next season. I’ve added the caveat that the bet is void if they fail to make the top 5 at the split.

  13. Interesting gossip/rumours about Broonys new book yesterday apparently been pulled by Celtic explosive stuff on two previous management teams

The ole cash strapped scrofulous hillbillies are not happy at bein’ so hated, yet they sign one of the few players who can make El Bag Douche look like Desmond Tutu.

  18. DBBIA,

I was wondering to myself earlier whether Barton hadn’t gone to ole Frannie Jeffers and Wayne Rooney’s Alma Mater, De La Salle Comp, in Croxteth. There were Bartons living in the same street, although he wasn’t one of them. Thought he might be related…………..

  19. Fair play to betfred. Already responded with the phone number for their football traders. Call them to discuss the bet I requested in detail and set odds.

    ParkcumSalf – he’s from Huyton.

It’s a bit rich for them [ but clearly consistent with their mindset] for them to seek protection for their players while in the same week signing a psychopath.

  22. Barton seems to be a bit of an attention seeker, and that might be enough in itself to persuade him to sign for the huns.

I can’t see it ending well for him or them.

  23. The Battered Bunnet on

The ashes of the Scottish Cup final will be raked over long after they’re cold, but it’s worth noting that 3 days after the event, neither BBC nor Sky, who between them had around 22 TV cameras inside the stadium, have shown any footage that might help to clarify what occured.

That the safety of the players was compromised is clear and utterly unacceptable. Evidence of assault remains absent, and in its absence, ill-feeling and unrest is being allowed to fester.

It’s also worth noting that the PFA Scotland statement issued yesterday refers to the players’ safety being compromised, but not to any harm sustained:

“it is completely unacceptable that the safety of our members was compromised in the scenes which followed the full time whistle. The wellbeing of our members was endangered and they were left open to threats and intimidation.”

The issues at the heart of this matter are too serious to allow them to be left unsubstantiated. The safety and wellbeing of players is inviolable.

Where are the recordings? Let’s see them, let’s know and let’s deal with it.

  24. Winning Captains

“To be fair it was some goal that they scored in the second half at Hampden. Worthy of winning the Cup Final even and opening up the stadium to the celebrating support – ones at the game and others watching in pubs and at home.

It would be both arrogant and foolish of those supporters working at the game to have ordered a significant slice of the available stewards to head on over to Govan to prepare the place.

After all the world beaters had their name on that cup.

Oh dear. Not to worry though the next Nimmo Smith character can begin the independent enquiriy on the 94th minute rather than 10 minutes earlier. ”

WC, did you get some juicy gossip while you were hobnobbing with the great and the good of the SMSM? ;)

  25. weeminger @ 10:52 am yesterday

I did not respond last night as the topic was Welcoming Brendan to CP but I hope I can do you the courtesy of a reply now that Brendan Day is over. Those that are uninterested in the OBFA Act can scroll by.

    “Very quickly.

I accept there are some politicos that were calling for a repeal early on. However, many jumped on it in the run up to the election as they thought it was a vote winner.”

The main mover in the repeal of the Act was James Kelly, a guy who was vilified on a respected Celtic fan site that advocated voting for the SNP in his constituency (he lost his constituency seat- so much for vote winner) but he was the figurehead for every opposition party that voted against the SNP at both the initiation of the Act and at the Justice Committee stage looking at their half-baked interpretation of an interim report. You cannot change the facts here- once the Act started to take shape- every other party joined the opposition. Even the Greens who were general supporters of the SNP majority government and even the Tories- who are wont to hide behind “Law and Order” issues and who would gain few votes from backing this measure. Not one independent minded SNP MSP could be found to dissociate from the Groupthink process. Not one independent SNP voice at MP or councillor level spoke against the SNP move. Not one prominent Party member raised the issue at Party Conference even though citizens exercising the right to protest peacefully were sinisterly harassed by FOCUS on their way to the protest.

80% or so of the potential Scottish electorate expressed views in favour of the OBFA because they have been told that it was an anti-sectarianism measure (only Ulster politics affected- we can express hatred of the English at Hampden- no bother) and of course, sectarianism is a bad thing and only a West of Scotland phenomenon so you won’t be affected just hem.

It takes bravery to oppose such odds- the political instinct is not to oppose the uninformed public if you want their vote.

It’s them that I refer to. I believe the act was wrong then, and is wrong now and none of the reasons for that have changed since Saturday. So the same should be true of all those calling for a repeal. I’ll withdraw that insult and reserve judgement until we see where it goes from here.

Again- you are focusing your ire on the brave proponents of repeal of the Act while praising the cleverness of the guys who are screwing us. The SNP dropped any weak commitment to be open to review the Act as soon as your votes were weighed in the recent election. They dropped all commitment to review once they knew they were not in a majority position in parliament any longer. Once they realised they could lose this vote on the OBFA, rather than be able to portray themselves as reasonable in making concessions, they went on the attack and said this was an anti-SNP and pro-sectarianism move to replace a needed Act. And they did all of this weeks ahead of Saturday- have you not been listening to your guys – the MSP for Cathcart and even some of the more sensible ones have been in studios across the country telling us they would defend the OBFA to the letter- and they have not changed their mind after Saturday- they were already bought and sold by bloc party dictat.

It still stands as a win:win as far as I’m concerned. As I said the SNP would have been able to stand by it but if defeated on the repeal show that they respecting democratic process. Easily spun as a win. If the motion is now withdrawn, or they win they can claim it was the right thing to do from the get go. Either way they can gain political traction.

Not so easy spun unless you ignore all the noises they made in the run up to any vote- which may not now happen- or if it does will happen under more adverse circumstances. The only win:win they get is that their supporters will swallow anything as a win. If they win a vote- they are masterful political operators: if they lose one- they are gracious democrats even though they would still be ranting about their opponents being pro-sectarianism.

They are clever only in the eyes of those that forgive them their every fault. It was not clever of two of their MPs to sleep with the same journalist. It was not clever of Kenny MacAskill (when was he ever?) to break the Official Secrets Act in his recent book on Lockerbie. But their followers are blind to such faults when they express fan worship rather than critical thinking.

The law is wrong, I want it removed from the statutes. Saturday makes that more difficult.

This is where we agree. And it becomes harder when we blame the proponents of repeal for this sad state rather than those who created the Act, who made honeyed noises about being open to persuasion when seeking votes, but who reneged on this view and went on the attack as soon as they lost control of the outcome. They are rubbing their hands in glee about Saturday and you are praising them for their cynicism, even whilst you disagree with them and are in opposition to their view.

At this rate, Snake P could be a lone voice in being an SNP voter willing to voice dissent. We best hope he is an influential voice there to oppose the triumphalism there.

    I’m aff intae work now.

  26. How many weeks off are the players getting this summer? When will BR actually get to see them on the training pitch?

My cynicism is reserved for those who I now believe will drop OBFA like a hot potato. I’ll be a very happy man if that doesn’t happen.

I’m not really praising the SNP for what I see as their ability to gain whatever happens. In some respects, it’s a pretty damning statement on politics at the moment.

Yes. I am an SNP supporter, but I wholly disagree with the OBFA. I’d be very dubious of anybody that states they agree with 100% of the policies of their favoured party.

The assault on Foderingham is available on video.

Yes I’v seen that one, handbags, in fact Hibs supporters stepped in and squared that one up, no assault IMO, as for the other stuff? Well simple thing is there isn’t any, trust me if there was we’d have seen it a thousand times, still no official statement from Ibrox with a board member or anyone one in some official capacity, that’s a strange one too? Then again it’s being ran by gangsters, an crooks.
