Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

Youth football at all levels is undermined by the numbersof boys wanting to kick a football. Most are stuck behind a PS4 or PC…………ironically playing a football based game!

The failure in continuing to base kids teams on age alone stiffles development for all involved. For example kid A might be the same age as kid B but in terms of physical development they may be man and boy. The smaller fails to develop a he can’t compete and the bigger does not face real competition.

The Pro youth set up is often a “softer” version of the game imho………….I mean the aggression is less……

A real issue when a youNg man is given the opporchancity to break into a first team.

Brilliant post very tactically knowledgeable, Ronny Deila can write them as well, including PowerPoint presentations.

Disagree entirely when you get to the replacement bit.

Re your comments about academies and the likes.

I have spoken to more than one former Celtic Boys Club player who joined the boys club in the Stein era.

Some of these guys wet on to forge a career elsewhere, others never broke through at all and some went on to become our heroes.

However, all of them tell the same story.

It was drilled in to you ” We are Celtic and we do not lose, and will not tolerate losing.”

These boys grew up with a total dread of losing and that losing was the end of the world.

One not particularly well liked ex player said that came straight down the pipe from Stein. At every level, losing was neither an acceptable option or under consideration.

No one dare “fail to turn up” as there was hell to pay from coaches, from team mates and from your mirror.

I am not advocating coaching by terror – far from it – but by God those players knew how to win!

That seems to be very much lacking in this team because they either turn up and win or don’t bother and lose for reasons which are not even clear to them.

A club the size of Celtic and in the current position of Celtic need a real leader from the top.

Someone who can motivate everyone from the janitor, the tea pourer, the gate man, the kids, the 1st team, the board, the CEO, the shareholders, season ticket holders, the press, the TV guys, and club dug!

Someone who makes people mindful of their P’s and Q’s, who is to be treated with respect and who will back up everyone from the janitor through to the team dug with everyone knowing it.

Someone who bonds all those people and drills it into them that ” We are Celtic” and you are all part of my team, our team, this team …… and I have yer back and yer front!”

Man management is an oft used business term — club management is an underused footballing term yet a vital attribute and skill in a manager and his senior staff.

That leadership should go through the club from top to bottom like “Blackpool” on a stick of rock.

And right now …….. that ain’t there!

Spot on mate . Celtics no 1 problem is the absent landlord . I still believe lawwell is told what to do . Celtics priority IMHO should be a manager with a European pedigree . Yes it will cost , but build for Europe and football here will be taken care off . We have wasted years of a lead over thems, and lost millions by not qualifying for the cl group stages . False economy as far as I’m concerned . I have watched some poor celtic team over the many years I have followed the bhoys , but I fear this side is as poor as I have seen . Things at our club have not been right for a while now . No disrespect to Ronny , but I fear we should cut our losses now and approach a European savvy boss . All this talk about Mackay , lambert . McIntyre etc a load f nonsense . Pay the money and attract a top man to a top club . IMHO it will reap rewards .

Agree with your post. I made a point last night about the 4-2-3-1 formation. It’s workable but the way we are using it is all wrong. As you say defensive responsibility is not good enough. I think the work ethic is there, it’s more of a tactical problem.

  6. Spidey101

Good read, totally agree with you on the tactical deficiencies of the team at the moment. I think three at the back would be worth a try. First goal on Thursday wouldn’t have happened if we’d had three at the back. When Boyata misplaces pass there would have two defenders to take care of Kamara and the runner through the middle instead of Efe not knowing which one to go to.

Three at the backs allows our wing backs to push further forward, keeps a strong three in the middle (defensive, box to box and creative/attacking midfielders) and allows us to play two up front.

  7. Bournesrecipe – yeah I am sure Ronnie can put his ideas down better than I have, it’s the implementation that matters and that’s why I am blogging rather than in Ronnie’s job!

Fair play on the replacement suggestion – I am not convinced Curbishley is the right man, but I do think we need, with our players and the quality of player we can expect, someone who can set us up solidly and make the best of what we have. Curbishly did that at Charlton, though was a relative failure at West Ham and has been looking for a job for a while so would jump at the chance of working for us. I can’t think of anyone else off hand or when I was typing that or now who would be realistic (ie not a return of MON or WGS).

    Fantastic wee read, thank you.

Right, off to show face at a one year old’s birthday party before sneaking round to The K Park for some Scottish Cup action. EKOK.

    Enjoy your afternoon, all…

  9. Gary67, thanks. I thought about 3 at the back, but frankly I don’t think any of out options for the wing back role are either fit enough or tactically disciplined enough to do the necessary tracking back. I think all the players need the system to be simple and three at the back is pretty unknown to most of them. Longer term, when transfer windows open etc it is certainly an option and I’d like us to be able to play both well!

  10. My final thoughts on the Kris C v Ronnie D spat.

Don’t believe KC’s rant was directed at Ronnie, fairly obvious he was shouting at John C. If everyone who ever lost their temper and showed a lack of disrespect to their team leader (whatever the hell disrespect could be construed as this being 2015 and not 1815 ) many of us would have been ‘fired’ on numerous occasions. I know I would have been having had many ‘toe to toe’ heated disagreements with various senior managers when I knew I was right to do so, and not all in private either.

Surely if anyone is to lose their job after the absolute debacle of Thursday it should be Ronnie. Only an absolute board sycophant would claim that RD has done anything to merit his tenure as team manger. We are a tactical shambles at present so much so that we struggle to beat SPFL cannon fodder week in week out. High pressing, high tempo, football played by a super fit squad!! Absolute utter nonsense. Good to see the majority of the support are waking up to see that the emperor is indeed ‘bollock naked’

    Yoof development?

    It’s good and improving.

    I’d change 2 things:

    1) Continue with the 7 aside format through U16

    2) Find a mechanism to keep our best young players at their club through to age 24.

The first does a number of things:

It reduces the impact of physical development on the nature of the game.

It gives each player hugely more touches on the ball in each game.

It prevents the labelling and compartmentalising of players at a young age.

It reduces the amount of space on the pitch, requiring enhanced touch, control and passing.

And it keeps more kids in the game longer, the 7 aside set up needing more players per squad.

The second, keeping the best players at their developing club through to age 24, allows the player to become established, rewards the interest of the fans, makes the club more competitive, and crucially, delivers considerably more transfer fees for the investment in development.

Off oot to K Park for a pint, some chat, and some fitba’.

My difficulty with Ronny ( despite his PowerPoint skills ☺️)

is inflexibility such as change, any change would do for me.

It’s been posted ad nausem, but we need a defensive coach even if he is another Ronny type ‘ideologist’,© Ruggyman for the Barca theory to work, it has to work in attack, and defence.

Ronny falls in the first paragraph of the manual, where defenders don’t defend properly, under his set up, he didn’t even get by with two excellent CB’s in VVD and Jason.

If you can see where his ‘high pressing’ fails leaving ‘shaky’ CB’s isolated, – why can’t he?

With regard to replacements now is not the time, and if the board decide that two shots at Europe was enough, and he does move on, it’ll be with two out of two titles, and hopefully a sunny day in Kings Park.

The choosing of the manager is the problem, and it’s carried out by the people who could be the real problem.

  16. Don’t know if this has been posted yet- and maybe, it’s a bit early to treat the subject humorously but I found it funny

    Return of the Rant

P.S. Posts are improving today as brains are being engaged as well as the passion.

A Celtic manager is only ever a string of games away from a crisis and, when the gaps between the crises shortens, then your jaiket nail goes shoogly

  17. I’ve just read the last 10 or so pages.

It seems that the majority of us can easily identify exactly what is lacking, and why it’s re-occurring. So, why on earth can’t our management team?

Hamiltontim; brilliant assessment from you last night. Agreed with every word.

Dumbhoy; I actually thought it was option 1. KC looked stunned to be taken off. I thought Kris was screaming ” Listen to the fans. Can you hear them?”

I didn’t expect to win. I thought a draw would be acceptable given their first two results. I was prepared to give Ronny till the end of this season but now I think we need to review things at Christmas. If as I fear, we finish bottom of the group it’s time to go.

Atlantic League? At this rate of decline we’ll be going with a begging bowl to the Irish League! I think the Icelandic league may be beyond us now.

  18. The Battered Bunnet

The pop up ad you refer to will be removed next week as we will have by then fulfilled our contractual agreement.

The new server, which was introduced when the new site went up, is clearly struggling and the advertising revenue gained will be funding improvements on that front.

Yesterday there were over 29,000 people accessing CQN and clearly the additional visitors is causing problems on the blog.

The advertising revenue will also allow Paul to stop funding the server costs as capacity has increased costs to a level where he could find a good family holiday rather than pay the server costs on CQN which are many hundreds of pounds every month.

Even that capacity is not enough and site running slow is caused by this.

I do understand your frustration – we have put a huge amount of work into this and it is a seven day service we are providing. Hopefully you will see a difference shortly.

  19. SPIDEY101

Think Izzy is more of a wing back than full back, Janko as well would benefit from playing with more license to get forward. Not sure about Tierney, not seen enough of him. Lustig definitely would struggle but I’d move him into the centre of defence to give us a bit more leadership and experience beside our younger, more inexperienced central defenders. Playing there may also prolong Lustig’s career as he struggles now to get up and down at full back, injuries taking there toll.

Start with the support. without asking why you proclaim it as shocking and this transfers to the team on the park.

One of the reasons for the support’s reaction is, that no matter how much backing they give, the have seen the Malmo, Maribor, Molde, St. Mirren, Kille and Morton movies too often.

Yes the support is split and this is entirely due to a lack of leadership from and the lack of being able to equate in any fashion with those at the top.

For example, how many would recognise our Chairman if he passed them in Argyle Street.?

There is also a reluctant acceptance that on the park, the meaningful absence of THEM should have seen Celtic, domestically at least, hoover up everything in sight. This simply has nor happened.

Whatever the malaise at Celtic, and the evidence suggests that there is a serious malaise, it is no fault of a support that perhaps should have considered it position some time ago.

  22. Nice to see all the happy moaners back, that was predictable, it must be great when you get your wish?

Sorry, b ut another thing on “team” or “club” Management.

For the last number of years now we have been a club which has invested in talent which in some cases we then sell on for a high profit.

This not only means that we are a team that is in constant transition, but it means we are a club with three classes of player.

    1. Those that turn out to be high transfer fee jewels who we will only see for two to three seasons as tmost.

    2. Those who don’t make it at all, and so come and go and almost disappear yet are still on the wage bill.

    3. The In Betweeners — those who are the stable backbone of the club right now and who are, by our own club definition, good enough for Celtic in Scotland because they are neither duds nor good enough to move on for BIG profit.

Now, i am not saying that this makes the In Betweeners either lazy or without motivation or value, but it does put them in a different category and mindset of the player who falls into group 1.

It also tells us that we will never have a team of players from group one and so should not expect the type of results that a team of group one players could achieve.

Ronny D got his tactics all wrong the other night, but surely the football tactics from on high, as opposed to the business or accounting tactics, must come under scrutiny and question,

Good players play better when playing alongside great players and as a matter of tactics we are not looking to build a long term team of good or great players as we sell them off for profit with one or two exceptions.

Bournesrecipe, you are right that Ronnie, like most lower calibre Guardiola clones, focus on the attacking bit of the philosophy but neglect the defensive side. I am not sure a defensive coach would work if Ronnie isn’t open to learning from them and compromising and I don’t think he would be or at least his inability to adapt would not suggest differently.

Again on who chooses the manager, I think you are also right. MON was already here when PL arrived. When MON left, Dermot chose WGS who was a success, when he left I think PL convinced DD to go for Mowbrey as he was a Celtic man who played decent football – that failed and Lenny got a shot as interim. I think Lenny too was DDs choice, but Wasn’t appointed right away as PL tried to get someone else. When Lenny left, Keane was clearly DDs choice for the job but wouldn’t take it. Then again I think PL talked DD into giving Ronnie the job. In short, I think when DD is sufficiently interested or sticks to his guns, we appoint the right man, otherwise PL is left to do it and we don’t!- I think the personal relationships between manager and DD make a difference at least initially. Just my guess, so may be completely wide of the mark…

Word has it, and this came out of lennoxtown, that big Jozo , signed for “allegedly ” 5 million, has been fully fit for over 2 weeks, and is already expressing frustration at lack of inclusion.

Add to that Sutton’s observation about Blackett being signed, but not by Deila.

Is it the case that Deila is shunting players signed by the club, and not necessarily by him?

Either way, Ronny is currently supplying sufficient rope to hang himself
