Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

  1. CULTSBHOY LIKES LIVING WAGE HATES HEATED DRIVEWAYS on 24TH OCTOBER 2015 11:57 AM

    Bada Bing

Presumably Celtc were not overwhelmed by applications when Delia was appointed..?

That was my point mate,PL only appoints managers he can control. If the job was advertised,i think a lot of high profile guys would apply for it.Lawwell is an accountant, and to the best of my knowledge has no football experience whatsoever. He has too much power, and therefore has too much influence on football matters at Celtic IMO.

  2. I’m a bit torn over Deila at the minute.

I think he talks a good game, has the right philosophy, and even his system should be a good one. It’s just not working for him or for us at the moment.

We need a manager who will develop players and promote youth. Who will bring in young unpolished diamonds and (sadly) shine them before selling most off at a healthy profit. We need someone who will deliver attacking football, and when things click we definitely get that. But when they don’t we look absolutely clueless.

Is that down to the manager and tactics, or is it due to limitations in the playing squad? The truth, like always, probably lies someone in the middle.

Our defending this year has been atrocious. I don’t know how many goals we’ve conceded from Boyata misplacing passes out of defence this year but it’s not on. Ambrose, like Boyata, blunders and loses concentration leading to more goals. That we paid money for him is worrying. Someone has pulled the wool over our eyes on that one.

We are getting the basics wrong and that cannot be forgiven. I don’t know if it’s the manager or John Kennedy who is responsible for the back line but changes need to be made. The players need to take a good hard look at themselves and if they are not capable we may as well play some of the U21s at least until we can sign some defenders who can actually defend.

Paul67 said it wasn’t the defence that lost us the goals but the way we were set up… yes, to an extent, but if we had good defenders we wouldn’t have conceded those goals regardless of how far forward the full backs pushed up or how little protection the midfield were offering.

We have a lot of water carriers in the team. Brown, Biton and Johansen are/can be good at what they do but they have very little penetration. We don’t see many defence splitting passes from those 3, not nearly enough to allow us to be anything other than one dimensional. What makes this an even bigger sin is that we rarely play with any sort of width, and when we do teams are quite happy to allow us the space and squeeze the middle as we don’t score from crosses. I’ve never seen a bunch of players who fail to find a man with a cross so often, Izzy’s crossing is atrocious, I’m not a very good footballer but I would be raging with myself if I hit one cross out the park during a game – with Izzy it’s a 50/50 chance. Of course it doesn’t help that we don’t have anyone decent in the air to take advantage of any balls that do happen to come in to a decent area.

All teams need to do right now is defend deep and squeeze the middle of the park and we soon run out of ideas.

A 4-2-3-1 is been what we’ve been crying out for for years, particularly in Europe, but it’s not working. I don’t know if we don’t have the players for it or if the manager or coaching staff aren’t teaching it well enough but it’s impotent right now. It should be able to change between a defensive 4-5-1 and an ultra attacking 4-3-3 at the drop of a hat with high pressure and pressing like Dortmund but just now it looks like a shaky defence that never look confident with players running at them, a central unit in midfield who do a lot of sideways passing and are scared to make space to receive a pass whether that’s dropping deep to take the ball off the defenders or going beyond their man to help their midfield partner, wide players who either hide or come central and don’t really fulfil the task of becoming midfield players or supporting the striker, and then we have strikers no suited to playing up top on their own, we’re not blessed with blistering pace nor height or strength up top. Griffiths against poorer teams, or even those who are more open, gets space and can cause some damage. But against a packed defence who press him hard the ball gets lost with little support around him.

We need big changes. Carlton Cole might offer something different but it just looks like an afterthought to me.

  3. Cracking Lancashire derby on just now between Blackburn and Burnley. Belter scored by Scott Arfield. Looked a good prospect at Falkirk and seems to be developing in England. Celtic fan too.

  4. Ruggyman, apologies and credit where it is due! Mourinho, Guardiola, Ferguson, all the modern era “greats” recognise the need for players and teams to attack and defend equally well and put as much effort into both (Mourinho possibly a bit defensive leaning). Similarly they both instil the need to, and fear of not, winning into their clubs (again in Mourinhos case maybe a bit too far as you end up with Porto or Costa esque behaviour).

It is funny how we all deal with our anger, disappointment and hurt in different ways when Celtic lose. Really there’s no right or wrong so long as it’s genuine.

    Saturday 10th April 2010.

    Celtic v Ross County

Scottish Cup semi final at Hampden Park

    “F=== sake Celtic!”

    “Lennon you’re a clueless d—!”

    “Ross County! F===in’ Ross County!”

The father and son looked at each other as they walked the steps of the old stadium and listened to the abuse. They disagreed on whether the shouts were deserving or not but both had been watching Celtic long enough to know that inside the stadium wasn’t where you criticised the team.

    “You’re a f===in’ embarrassment Celtic!”

It was at this point that the father couldn’t take any more.

He was in his 60’s, thin as a rake with prominent cheek bones and had an uncanny resemblance to Hank Marvin from The Shadows.

The shout had come from the stairs parallel, one section along. The lad, probably in his mid 20s was tall and well made with short spiky hair. His short sleeved, hooped jersey barely concealed the tattoos on his broad upper arms. An Irish flag appeared briefly as his arm lifted in gesture to shout once more.

“I’m fuckin’ embarrassed watchin’ that ya lazy w===ers!”

At this point the son was struggling to keep up with his father as he knocked fellow supporters out of the way like skittles in a bowling alley as he moved his way past the rows of seats. Predictably. like an expectant tsunami, other supporters quickly moved aside.

Within seconds David (for that was his name) met Goliath.

The father looked up and pointed his finger at the abuser. By now his son had given up trying to hold back the tide and was by his father’s side.

“Embarrassed!? Embarrassed!? To be a Celtic supporter? You’re embarrassed to be a Celtic supporter son, is that right?”

The abuser was thrown, he hadn’t expected to be confronted at all let alone by an oul git that looked like some sort of ageing hippy. His forearms flexed and he moved towards the seemingly frail man before him. From behind him four of the younger man’s friends edged forward.

“Who you talkin’ to ya oul d===?!”

It wasn’t a question in the real sense.

At this point the son forced his way in front of his father but quickly noticed several other men making their way down the the stair case in their direction. But before they could get there his father started.

“When I first started watching Celtic we could only dream of getting to a semi final! We were bereft of talent, bereft of decent players and without any sort of guidance on or off the park. We sat in the shadow of the Huns and were told that that was our place. We had referees who clearly despised us and we were opposed in any form we made of progression on or off the football pitch. Any expression of our Celtic ethos was met with hostility and downright hatred. The faith of our founders is derided and mocked and our Irish heritage is sullied at every turn. We’ve beaten cheated in Liverpool in ’66 and here at Hampden in ’87. I know son I was there and you were still shiting green. Today was a setback and yes things may need to change but always remember who you are, where you came from and how you present that to others!”

    Suddenly, there was a pause.

Those who’d come down the stairs were friends of the son and were ready for action if required.

“Fair play auld yin. Nae offence. Up the Ra!”

Calm was restored and handshakes were offered all round.

The troops on both sides were stood down.

As the father band son left the stadium the old man turned to his son.

I have a question, and it’s not entirely tongue in cheek…

Is Ronny Deila, trying to attempt Managerial suicide, whether consciously or sub-consciously ?

Word has it, and this came out of lennoxtown, that big Jozo , signed for “allegedly ” 5 million, has been fully fit for over 2 weeks, and is already expressing frustration at lack of inclusion.

Add to that Sutton’s observation about Blackett being signed, but not by Deila.

Is it the case that Deila is shunting players signed by the club, and not necessarily by him?

Either way, Ronny is currently supplying sufficient rope to hang himself

    The Huddle

    Your final statement is interesting.

    ————

I’ve always been of the opinion that more “non football” people should be involved in football, if that makes sense :o)

If you haven’t played the game up to a certain level then it is almost impossible to get into professional football. The argument will be who knows footballer better, an ex pro or a punter

  22. RD may be the best chalkboard coach on the planet but the evidence so far suggests he lacks the ability to transfer his ideas on to the field of play.

Playing a high pressing game is fine if implemented properly.

We are a collection of fractured units.

Our spacing on field is generally hopeless with numerous week areas.

    The possession stats are worthless.

When it’s divided into positive and negative then it will be meaningful.

I think we have a decent squad but lack the coaching ability to make it into a team.

  23. According to today’s Herald, Leigh Griffiths thinks that the fans went over the top after Thursday’s game against Molde.

I suggest that Leigh has a quiet word with the likes of Big Billy, Stevie Chalmers, Bobby Lennox or John Clark.

They could put him wise to the fifties and early sixties when argueably players vastly superior to and trying a damned sight harder than the present lot, could find themselves being mercilessly barracked from within a few minute of the kick off.

He might have a few words with a former Chairman whose door was regulalry knocked by disgruntled fans who to my knowledge, were never turned away.

Try that one with DD, PL, or Iain Bankier and see how far you get.
