Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

Seen the Ronny movie so many times he’s a dead man walking. Barnes, Mowbray same movie. But Celtic fans wanting us to get beat get a grip.

I remember well, during the reigns of Barnes and Mowbray that I thought it would be better to end it now, quickly rather than prolong the downward spiral.

Of course I will always want a win, but when you see a dud, you look for the end.

Good point. I’ll think on that.

I see nothing positive at the moment. More than anything, I see us squandering the time that should see us build an irretrievable gulf between us and the team that cheated there way to a nine in a row.

The lax attitude around CP at the PLC level is a significant factor in why we gambled on Lennon and then Deila. We simply have lost ambition at our club.

    I’ll repeat that for emphasis.

We have lost ambition at Celtic

  11. I think that Brisbane is ticking the box!

If, it takes Dundee Utd to cuff us 0-4 to make fans finally realize that, Ronny hisny goat it then good!

In fact….make it 0-5….just to be sure.

If, it takes a defeat for us from the deid huns to make fans realize that we’ve got to re-structure the club by, dismantling the PLC set-up and, get rebellious-uppitty-Tim-Celtic-Supporters in charge of the club then, geez a mibbery-JRP-Gordon-Bobby-Davidson-David-Syme type of mugging at CP with the orcs breaking seats-invading-the-pitch-at-the-end-to-do-a-mock-huddle then, go through the entire song book before, being removed from the pitch by doing the bouncy-cops to make way for 100 flute-bands from all the bitterest corners of orcville to parade round the track and, doing the bouncy when the reach the traditional Ran#ers end….just to be sure that, Celtic fans will vote for the change at the top of the club.ok.

  13. Personally i think Ronny should start Commons.

1 very fired up player with a point to prove although each and every 1 of them should be like that anyway.

That would only be if he has had a full team meeting with every single member of our squad and hammered Commons in front of them and let each and every i of them know that that kind of behaviour wouldn’t be tolerated again and anyone who did the same would never kick another ball for us.

Draw a line under it and move on.

  14. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

RD will go because he has lost credibility with the fans and the only way to retrieve it would to beat Ajax and Molde and draw with Fenerbahce. Doubt many see that happening given the extreme mediocrity of our team and tactics, particularly the defence.

Changing the manager won’t solve our problem though. The shop window, moneyball strategy of our estimable CEO might work wonderfully for his bonus, but it’s hopeless for building a winning team. We are in a constant state of flux on the park because Lawwell and Desmond’s fascination is with proving football can be successfully run as profitable business, even in an unpromising ‘market’ like Scotland’s. They are not fascinated by the football itself. If flux rather than team building is what pays, so be it. Ronny’s proven to be not very good, but to be fair most managers would struggle to meet the fans’ expectations in this context, albeit pretty much anyone could enhance our current organisation and tactical discipline.

So Ronny will likely go sooner or later, but until Lawwell goes and takes his moneyball strategy with him we’re screwed. Never mind looking to the EPL Pedro all wide eyed with dollar signs, maybe we should be looking to the neighbouring Norwegian league for a step up in football challenge. Maybe after a few years at that higher level we might even be able to challenge for the title there…

Technically dead, but the disease remains. Good analogy might be to see RFC 1876 as a corpse. Dead. But the bitter disease that sustained it, has not been eradicated. It is alive and it has infected a new body.

    That zombie will get bigger.

Better analogy is one oft quoted on here ” same flies, different shite”.

Team died, no ifs, no buts. Any other narrative perpetuates their agenda that it’s still the same “club”.

  22. A win today will not make everything all right but it will make things a little better, a win in Tynecastle and a win against the sheep will make things a lot better, if we do 4 wins in a row against Molde then we can start talking about things being all right.

I can live without us making the Europa Cup knock out stage providing there is clear evidence that we are improving as a team and we are playing attractive football.

We will win the SPFL and as ever Cups are in the hands of the Gods and the MIBS.

Celtic v Dundee United. 90% of the two pages dedicated to Mixu. One column about how Carlton Cole is going to rumble SPL defenders. That was the input from the Celtic viewpoint.

St Mirren v Rangers (quote). 95% dedicated to them – I didn’t read it so can’t say what it was about. And half a column on St Mirren.

  28. In Glasgow, back in ’88

    poor children needed fed

    and some big-hearted Irish men

    who lived around Parkhead

decided in their charity to silence

    hunger’s cry, so they started

    Celtic Football Club and raised

    the flag on high

and they raised the flag on high

and they raised the flag on high

    (they started Celtic football club)

and raised the flag on high

Then bigots who did hate their race

and most of all their creed

used their power to hinder them

    in spite of childrens need

but Celtic’s spirit – then as now

    despite each pressman’s lie

    they rose above all obstacles

and kept their flag on high

They kept their flag on high

and they kept their flag on high

    they rose above all obstacles

and kept their flag on high

They carried on from strength to strength

    from fame to greater fame

now all who’ve heard of football

    know the Glasgow Celtic name

But still the same old bigotry will let

no chance go by to blacken this great football

name and the flag that flies on high

To blacken this great football name

and the flag that flies on high

To blacken this great football name

and the flag that flies on high.

    When in 1953

    the ruling SFA

they said that Celtic football club

    must take their flag away

But Kelly and his Celtic men said

    they would rather die

    than to disgrace their forefathers

and the flag that flies on high

and the flag that flies on high

and the flag that flies on high

    than to disgrace their forefathers

and the flag that flies on high

    And still the Irish tricolour

    it waves o’er Paradise

where proudly it’s admired and loved

    by Irish exile’s eyes

God grant the like Bob Kelly

    all attacks we will defy

    from the enemies of Celtic

and the flag that flies on high

and the flag that flies on high

and the flag that flies on high

    from the enemies of Celtic

and the flag that flies on high

  29. If I were Ronny, I’d definitely play Commons today.

At centre-back alongside either Efe or Dedryck.

    That’ll larn ‘im!

  30. I sure get pissed off with Celtic, our players, our management team and most definately our board and Peter the Bonus Collector.

Come the day I wish a defeat on Celtic will be the day I become a zombie!

I would love to see Celtic win 10-0 today, go on and win every game in this season domestically, win our next 3 Euro ties and qualify before going onto Euro final. That is my wish for our players, management team and club.

I am pissed off right now and feel our club is and has been poorly run for last 7 years, the main product of the business that is Celtic FC PLC has been run into ground and we are were we are because of bad decision after bad decision on the footballing side of business. AKA the heart of the business, the bit we all love. We have sold every prospect who has came of value year on year as the became rough diamonds and before we ever got to enjoy their full potential. We buy prospects by the barrow load in to prise one gem a season to balance the books when we should be investing in quality over quantity to strengthen the various positions in the team requiring it. Investing in strengthening to provide a stronger platform were we can compete and qualify for the CL group stages every season and were we can compete with teams from leagues no better than our own.

The club is run with a focus on balancing the books and I understand there is a need in the environment we play in to do that. However the money we have wasted on prospects and their salaries over the last seven years while players we know our managers have rated highly have been missed because we would not stretch that extra little bit has brought us to were we are today. One day and one day soon, potentially next summer if Bitton does not bring in a decent transfer value and we do not stop investing mainly in potential rather than quality we will be in a position were we will see our balance books in the red year on year, no potential for qualification to CL, questionable whether we’d be able to compete for Europa and a acceleration in the drop in standards of from even the professional footballers we employ right now that we know aren’t good enough to wear the hoops and a management team employed on little experience.

The future is not bright nor Rosey.

But it will always been Green for me were I wish my team to win and succeed even though I am open to seeing and talking about the problems within. Problems and issues that are of more concern to me than anything to do with some x-team from the South Side.

  31. Margaret McGill on

Back in the old days everything was simpler and more confused. Celtic’s enemies were everybody. Now it’s more complex. Yes the judiciary, the culture, the MSM and SFA for sure, however, as I was reading Tony Blair’s excuse as a human being today I’m wondering if retrospectively the allegorical assessment of Lawwell ‘s tenure as Celtic’s custodian will be seen equivalently?
