Efe the enigma, when our heroes get ill

480

The challenge Efe Ambrose will face should he proposed move to Hibs go through will be considerably less taxing that what he faced in the Premiership, or in Europe, with Celtic. Efe will go down in folklore as another African Cup of Nations enigma.

He was part of the heroic story against Barcelona in November 2012, before heading to the African Cup of Nations two months later. That tournament would see the player achieve the peak of his continent’s football Kilimanjaro. He played right back for champions, Nigeria.

That was on the Sunday. By the Tuesday he had been flown across the globe and made the starting line-up for Celtic in their Champions League last 16 game against Juventus. Two minutes into the game Efe was caught underneath the ball and out of position, Juventus exploited the lapse to the full.

As far as Efe’s time at the top goes, that was that. Since then his form has been on a pronounced downwards trajectory. The thing is, he’s still only 28. There was a player of considerable value in there one. If someone can bring focus to him, there may be again.

A word on matters relating to illness and medical information of our heroes…………

Pretty much everyone knew of Billy McNeill’s condition for some time but thankfully, it wasn’t subject to online speculation. There are a few guidelines on health matters which are worth observing:

Health is a private matter and should not be discussed online unless and until the person or family decide otherwise.

While we feel close to our heroes and will naturally want to offer support at a time of need, serious illness is the most private of matters, it is wholly inappropriate for a former footballer to hear his condition is a matter of public knowledge.

A bereavement should only be ‘revealed’ online by someone acting on the explicit instructions of the family. The unofficial release of this type of news is a very regretful manifestation of the internet age.

In recent years, we have seen many occasions of older celebrities’ deaths being incorrectly reported, then retweeted and retold thousands of times before it is denied. For an ill person and their family this can be a horrific experience.

The world can do without our condolences for a couple of hours until the family concerned have been able to contact all members.

These guidelines are scrupulously followed by the mainstream media in Scotland, who will hear of a footballer’s bereavement but hold the news – and prepare their reaction – until the family are ready.

For former-Celtic players, the club will usually be in touch with the family and release the news at the appropriate time. If you want to express your condolences, prepare your thoughts but hold until an official announcement.

Apparently the petition did the trick. She and her mother have been released and are not getting deported — today at least!

I posted an update on it about 6am,to let people know that the petition had been a success.

And to express my gratitude to everyone on here who saw it for the gross injustice that I did,and signed the petition.

    28 Feb 2017 — Hi everyone,

My mother and I are very happy to have been released and you all know it is only because of everyone’s support, most importantly Hywel Williams MP. Thanks to everyone who raised awareness by signing and sharing the petition.

I am still overwhelmed with the help and support I am getting.

I will be grateful forever. I can’t wait to get back to university and continue with my studies.

Please note that I haven’t been granted leave to remain and solicitors are on board to try and sort it out.

    Thanks again.

  6. Morning all

Last posting prior to my Lenten sabbatical.

Good luck to Efe. I do not quite agree with Paul’s assessment as I thought he did well in his second season when he was partner for Vigil and I thought often did the dirty work for the Dutchman.

Under Ronny though he was rarely secure and latterly too often a liability. I think though most of us would recognise that he was a wholehearted player who never hid. He was not a good player in the Deila seasons but he was not someone I disliked and like Sammi and Kris C and I think now Nir B- an outsider who gets us. I hope he gets his residency sorted and that if he ever returns to Celtic Park – on or off the field- he gets a good reception.

Like most – probably all- of us I have been knocked sideways by the news of Big Billy. I had seen him a year ago and thought he looked frail but people I know saw him at the semi-final in October and reported him to be looking quite well so the news did surprise me although overall I knew he was far from well. I have no great personal anecdotes when it comes to Billy McNeill- he was the one Lion I was almost overawed by though he was pretty down to earth as they all were when he spoke to me. The Definitive Celt perhaps

As I say this is my last posting prior to Easter and I gave my reasons the other night. But several of you have me on Facebook, mobile or e-mail so if there is any news I must know – good or bad- please contact me.

I wonder how much things will change in my absence

    Hail! Hail!

I hope to post a link to something a bit different later today (it is being worked on as I type) but just want to highlight something.

This site has supported Mary’s Meals continuously over a number of years, and as a result, many deprived kids have been fed through the efforts of CQN’ers.

Mary’s Meals has now spread its wings into the war torn city of Aleppo and is now feeding 1500 children in schools there. Aleppo is like no other place where Mary’s Meals operates. It represents a wholly different type of social deprivation and devastation.

Mary’s Meals is also feeding a further 1430 children in Beirut. These are kids who have had to flee from the worst consequences of war and heartache in Syria.

March 1st 1967 Vojvodina novi sad win 1 nothing in EC QF, seven days later stevie bhoy and the blond head of big Billy meets wee Jimmys corner and Celtic win 2-1 on agg. The play off in Rotterdam need not go ahead. The ref in the game( my friend tells me) had only one arm. Very good times then.

Blackburn Rovers have been dealt a blow in their bid for survival in the Sky Bet Championship, with Efe Ambrose returning to parent-club Celtic, following difficulties securing a work permit, confirms the club’s official website.

The 28-year old defender agreed to join Rovers on-loan until the end of the season from Celtic, during the January transfer window.

Unfortunately Ambrose has had to return to Scotland after Rovers were unsuccessful with their application for a work permit.

    AdTech Ad

Tony Mowbray, who was appointed as Blackburn manager last week, told the club’s official website: “The football club has worked extremely hard behind the scenes to try and make it happen, but it isn’t going to be happening.

“I spoke to the boy (Ambrose) and he understood the situation. Percentage-wise it was very difficult for us to get a work permit for him, potentially up to seven weeks, which takes out a lot of games.”

Ambrose’s departure is a blow for Rovers, who are struggling at the foot of the Championship table, currently sitting 23rd in the division.

Mowbray’s side picked up a valuable point against fellow strugglers Burton Albion on Friday night, and face another massive game this evening when they welcome Derby County to Ewood Park.

Blackburn fans… Are you disappointed with the news regarding Ambrose? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Wait till I see that… fella later. Remember Jimmy Hasty playing for Dundalk in european cup game. Jimmy had one arm and I think the only player to make that claim. Sadly Jimmy, a Belfast catholic was shot dead by loyalist terrorists, simply because he was walking down a street normally frequented by RCs.

  17. I see Broony has a pass success rate of 93% in the 2787 passes he has attempted this season.Thats on top of having the best success rate in the CL group stage. This is quite astonishing for a player that so many kept telling the rest of us could not pass a ball.

He has been sensational this year and should collect POTY award. In my humble opinion.

  18. FU

Of course, jimmy won the corner. Big Billys headed corner courtsey of charlie was as famous as cup final of 65.A big slap on the wrists.

    Cheers

  20. Some people get get very dewy eyed when speaking about Efe.Would any other player who made the amount of big game mistakes get the same treatment?.I liked the guy,but he had many flaws to his game. His timing of his jump was woeful,so many times caught under the ball. His concentration was never great. Not the best things for a central defender.I hope he goes on and performs mightily for Lenny at Hibs.

    LISBON UPDATE

I have been informed this morning by Easyjet that the flight to Lisbon departing from Edinburgh Airport has proven so popular for some reason that they have decided that the route should be serviced by a larger aircraft!

As a consequence previously allocated set numbers have to be reallocated AND for those who are still considering going the price of a return trip has reduced slightly in comparison to the price advertised yesterday.

    Just saying.
