Expectations but remember Gretna (liquidated)

1137

The players would have had a light training session at Lennoxtown today as muscles continue to refill after Wednesday night’s exertions. Expectations of Celtic in the Champions League are not high, and were exceptionally low when this group was drawn, but even so, these games have a huge financial, physical and even emotional impact on every area of the club.

One argument suggests the last thing we need is a cup semi-final four days after a Champions League outing. An alternative thought is that this is the perfect game for Celtic right now. Memories linger of sitting stressfully at Fir Park days after Celtic beat the reigning European Champions, Milan, as (subsequently liquidated) Grenta held onto a lead until the 87th minute.

While playing (subsequently liquidated) Rangers away 64 hours after winning a Uefa Cup semi-final 1200 miles from home in 2003 proved to be the perfect game to instil steel into the legs.

With what passes as a fully fit squad, Brendan has choices to make for Sunday. Did Patrick Roberts do enough off the bench against Borussia to justify a start? Perhaps. He’s a player who owes us one at Hamden too.

Callum McGregor will also fancy his chances ahead of Nir Bitton, who didn’t have a great Scottish Cup semi-final against the same opponents in April.

It would be a huge surprise if Moussa Dembele didn’t start as the lone forward, despite Leigh Griffiths itching to get on alongside him. Brendan will not change formation for this game, while Moussa will fancy his chances against a defence he punished to ruthlessly last month.

For me, our two most important players on Sunday will be Scott Sinclair and Tom Rogic. They are the epitome of the modern footballer, strong, skilful, intelligent and difficult to defend against. If we can get them on the ball often enough we’ll score a lot of goals.

Pretty much every Celtic fan I know expects Mark Warburton to have learned a lesson from his Celtic Park whipping and for him to deploy a more defensively-minded team this time. My Newco pals don’t expect this to happen. Warburton hasn’t varied his game-plan since arriving at the club and is apparently reluctant to start experimenting now.

He took his team to Hampden to face Celtic against similarly long odds last season. Within minutes we knew we were in a game, and despite the clear chasm between the teams, it was Newco who faced Hibs in the Scottish Cup final.

A repeat of the 5-1 win at Celtic Park is possible, but you’ve seen enough football to know that nothing can be taken for granted on Sunday. Remember that Newco came close to levelling that 5-1 game at 2-2 early in the second half, and the latter part of their collapse came after going down to 10 men.walk-for-jonathan

I’m off later to meet those from the Tyneside No. 1 and friends, who have walked (yes, WALKED), from Merthyr Tydfil and will reach Doherty’s Bar in Hamilton this afternoon. They’ve pretty much walked a marathon a day for 13 days and will make the final journey to Celtic Park tomorrow.

This herculean effort has been made to mark the memory of Jonathan Thomas, who aged 30 lost his biggest fight one year ago tomorrow.

We’re lucky as Celtic fans that we get to meet and read about people who do these things in our name. It’ll take you 2 minutes to let them know how inspiring they are here.

It’s also worth marking the events in Aberfan, the village a few miles from Merthyr Tydfil which was visited by unimaginable tragedy 50 years ago today.

  1. I was entitled to a ticket due to be on the HCTS and also attended both previous ties against Motherwell and Alloa.

Likewise last season I attended the Quarter Final V Morton but refused my Semi Final ticket V Sevco.

  2. Stan Hilton, an unlikely warrior

When ninety-four year old David Lomon died just before Christmas 2012, he was almost certainly the last of the volunteers from the Spanish Civil War still to be alive in Britain. While his former comrade from London, Geoffrey Servante, was known to be alive a few years ago living in the Forest of Dean, no word has been heard for some time, so it seems all too probable that he too is, sadly, no longer with us.

    Former British volunteer Stan Hilton

There is, though, still one British veteran who is still very much alive and well. However he no longer lives in Britain, but in Australia. In Yarrawonga, to be precise, just over 200km north of Melbourne, on the border between Victoria and New South Wales. It’s a long way from his birthplace of Newhaven (looking at the map, it’s a long way from anywhere).

Not much is known about ninety-five year old Stan Hilton, and much of what we do know is a little vague. In order to find out more, he was tracked down by the film maker David Leach, who wrote and produced the 2001 documentary, Voices from a Mountain. The film includes interviews with a number of British volunteers: John Dunlop, Sol Frankel, Jack Jones, George Wheeler and Alun Williams. It also has an unforgettable score, a beautiful reworking of the famous song from the civil war, Ay Carmela. I’m pleased to say that the documentary can still be watched on Youtube.

According to what he told David, Stan was nineteen when he jumped from his ship, the S.S. Pilson in Alicante in November 1937, after hitting an officer who’d been pushing him around. While the former ship’s steward apparently recalled little of his time in Spain, he did remember assaulting another officer he had taken a dislike to. He also described how, contrary to his and many other volunteer’s perceptions, Spain was by no means always sunny. In fact, ‘It was freezing. I was always bloody cold,’ he recalled.

We know from documents held in London and Moscow that, following a period of training with the British Battalion, Stan became caught up in the chaotic Republican retreats which resulted from Franco’s colossal offensive in the spring of 1938. With the Republican army in disarray and communications having essentially broken down, Stan ended up swimming across the River Ebro to evade being captured (or worse) by Franco’s soldiers, before deciding that he had had enough of the Spanish war. In March 1938, with the British captain’s permission, he boarded the SS Lake Lugano at Barcelona, and sailed for home.

Stan Hilton reacquainting himself with Spain

During the Second World War Stan served in the British Merchant Navy and, after demobilisation, took the decision to emigrate to Australia with his young family. And there he remained.

Stanley Gordon Hilton is now ninety-five years of age. He is also, as David Leach will testify, still alert, fit and healthy. They say that the struggle keeps you young and it certainly seems to be the case with Stan. Which struggles, however are not entirely clear. As David Leach explained, although English-born, Stan has always possessed a traditional Australian attitude towards authority:

‘I liked mucking about,’ Stan recalled over a glass of red wine at home in Yarrawonga. ‘I didn’t like being ordered around.’

    And it’s – “….off to mass.”

Brendan thinks that Kolo is amazing etc….blah, blah…

Reminds me of the days when, the Celtic manager of the time said that we all feel sorry for Paul McStay after he missed the penalty vs Raith Rovers……ah mean,….a Cellic captain feart tae take a penalty vs RR ????…..nae wunner he missed it, eh.

The same manager of the time said that he wished that we had 10 Peter Grants in the team ????

Ah mean, nae wunner we were p#sh.

Cronyism disny dae it at Parkheid / Cellic Park.

Ruthless, maverick managers who the players canny get to the bottom of – dae it.

    Mr Stein

    Mr Jansen

    Mr O’Neill

Mr Lennon on his 1st 2 seasons before he was reigned-in and supplied with puppet strings.

Mr Rodgers ? When he booted, Commons, Muldini and, Big Efe after his mistake in the friendly vs Barca…BR looked to have the ruthless-maverick bit aboot him.

But, Kolo will walk into the team on Sunday(or will he?)….ah wid drap him.

Ye see, when James Forrest plays – Cellic play….imho.

But, when teams cotton onto the fact that, the McGeady syndrome should be applied to JF…ie:

If teams mark JF oot the game, then they’ll probably defeat the Cellic coz, Cellic have eff all in the middle of the park….imho.

Where’s Cellic’s Murdo, Big Roy Aitken, Craig Burley, Stan Petrov ???

Could Brendan transform Armstrong into a much needed, ball-winning-box-2-box-hunskelper ?

I hope he does coz, Bitton is the biggest imposter-passenger in a Cellic jersey since the afore mentioned, Peter Grant, Rogic is guid but has the Paddy McCourt syndrome – he canny last a full game – why ?

McGregor is an invisible man, Henderson is the only one that I can see with a bit of dig although, Broony can put a shift in but, is easily reduced to the, Dyoof, Barton handbags level, putting himself 1st – that’s not on.

Hopefully Brendan manages to conjur up a team of hunskelpers the morra and, sticks it right to them – none of this 2-0 then put the tools away for fear of civil unrest p#sh. It should be a guid day for the Tims but, never, never, never, never, never dismiss a sleekit-mibbery kind of day – the establishment might just think that we’re due one.

Also,…….Brendan,…..I still don’t think that the – Roy Keane for the keys of the Cellic dug out story is dead.

    Only saying.

Anyway,….clique,..remember tae scroll by and curry favor with the nitpickers.

    Good Morning All.

Here is a wee story apropos of nothing:

When George was 5 years old he watched his mother and father effectively empty their house at gun point. Those holding the guns were soldiers and they were permitted, indeed ordered, to point their guns at George and his family by dint of an executive order given by Government.

There was no warning, no prior arrangement, and no discussion.

The soldiers just turned up one day, knocked on the door, pointed their guns and forced George’s mother and father, his baby brother and sister and George himself out on to the street.

His mum and dad were allowed to lift some clothing and some personal belongings, but beyond that, they were forced to leave their home, and everything in it, behind.

They would never see that home or its contents again.

They were loaded on to a truck and then driven away by the soldiers. They drove for miles, heading south, but without anyone telling them where they were going, why they were going anywhere or what was going to happen to them. George was terrified. His mum and Dad were terrified, and his baby brother and sister were too young to be terrified.

They were taken to a camp which was situated in a swamp. The conditions were terrible. There was no private accommodation for the family and they were simply left there with a number of families who all came from the same ethnic background. They were given no information about whether they would live or die, no access to medical treatment for any ailments, no educational facilities and only basic provisions and rations.

George had to get used to using a latrine and, at a given time, heading off to a communal shower with his father where he would wash with all the other males in the camp.

That was the way life was. They were surrounded by barbed wire, armed soldiers and had no freedom.

Worst of all they had no freedom and absolutely no idea whether or not they had a future or what that future would hold.

Then, one day, George’s father was summonsed to see those in charge of the camp. He was given the princely sum of around £50, told to put his family on a bus, and simply leave.

They had been in the camp for three years.

George’s mother and father would never return to their home, and George’s father could never return to his business. Armed with nothing more than what they stood up in and the £50 or so they had been given, the family journeyed on the bus for hours finally getting off in a medium sized city where they set about rebuilding some kind of normal life.

George’s dad found a job in real estate. His mum and dad were eventually able to rent a house and George went to high school with a view to returning to normality – if you can ever be normal after being marched away by soldiers and kept in a camp for about 3 years.

It all worked out ok for George in the end. He went on to become well known, successful in his chosen profession and someone who is hugely respected locally for his stance on human and other rights.

He even ended up in the neck of the woods once or twice, and if I remember correctly, he was definitely once, and possibly twice, The Chieftan of the Bearsden and Milngavie Highland Games.

The man who gave the order to detain George and his family was Franklyn Delano Roosevelt and the swamp camp where George was detained was in Akansas where William Jefferson Clinton would later be called Governor.

    Why was George locked up?

Well the clue comes from the fact that his mother was born in Sacramento California but prior to her marriage was called Fumiko Emily Nakamura and to most of us George will be forever known as the man who used to take the Star Ship Enterprise to warp factor 5 — Mr Sulu!

George Takei is quite a remarkable man. He went on to go to a Buddhist school, joined the boy scouts, studied architecture at Berkley but quite to join an acting school and journeyed to work with the Royal Shakespeare company in Stratford Upon Avon.

He has fought personal prejudice all his life campaigning for LGBT rights, political freedoms, stood for local elections and been involved in all sorts of things including transport commissions and various aspects of local government.

He has described his relationship with William Shatner as “difficult” partly because of their very differing political views.

An interesting man is George. He is no fan of Trump to say the least.

And he is a Nakamura to boot!
