Expectations but remember Gretna (liquidated)

1137

The players would have had a light training session at Lennoxtown today as muscles continue to refill after Wednesday night’s exertions. Expectations of Celtic in the Champions League are not high, and were exceptionally low when this group was drawn, but even so, these games have a huge financial, physical and even emotional impact on every area of the club.

One argument suggests the last thing we need is a cup semi-final four days after a Champions League outing. An alternative thought is that this is the perfect game for Celtic right now. Memories linger of sitting stressfully at Fir Park days after Celtic beat the reigning European Champions, Milan, as (subsequently liquidated) Grenta held onto a lead until the 87th minute.

While playing (subsequently liquidated) Rangers away 64 hours after winning a Uefa Cup semi-final 1200 miles from home in 2003 proved to be the perfect game to instil steel into the legs.

With what passes as a fully fit squad, Brendan has choices to make for Sunday. Did Patrick Roberts do enough off the bench against Borussia to justify a start? Perhaps. He’s a player who owes us one at Hamden too.

Callum McGregor will also fancy his chances ahead of Nir Bitton, who didn’t have a great Scottish Cup semi-final against the same opponents in April.

It would be a huge surprise if Moussa Dembele didn’t start as the lone forward, despite Leigh Griffiths itching to get on alongside him. Brendan will not change formation for this game, while Moussa will fancy his chances against a defence he punished to ruthlessly last month.

For me, our two most important players on Sunday will be Scott Sinclair and Tom Rogic. They are the epitome of the modern footballer, strong, skilful, intelligent and difficult to defend against. If we can get them on the ball often enough we’ll score a lot of goals.

Pretty much every Celtic fan I know expects Mark Warburton to have learned a lesson from his Celtic Park whipping and for him to deploy a more defensively-minded team this time. My Newco pals don’t expect this to happen. Warburton hasn’t varied his game-plan since arriving at the club and is apparently reluctant to start experimenting now.

He took his team to Hampden to face Celtic against similarly long odds last season. Within minutes we knew we were in a game, and despite the clear chasm between the teams, it was Newco who faced Hibs in the Scottish Cup final.

A repeat of the 5-1 win at Celtic Park is possible, but you’ve seen enough football to know that nothing can be taken for granted on Sunday. Remember that Newco came close to levelling that 5-1 game at 2-2 early in the second half, and the latter part of their collapse came after going down to 10 men.walk-for-jonathan

I’m off later to meet those from the Tyneside No. 1 and friends, who have walked (yes, WALKED), from Merthyr Tydfil and will reach Doherty’s Bar in Hamilton this afternoon. They’ve pretty much walked a marathon a day for 13 days and will make the final journey to Celtic Park tomorrow.

This herculean effort has been made to mark the memory of Jonathan Thomas, who aged 30 lost his biggest fight one year ago tomorrow.

We’re lucky as Celtic fans that we get to meet and read about people who do these things in our name. It’ll take you 2 minutes to let them know how inspiring they are here.

It’s also worth marking the events in Aberfan, the village a few miles from Merthyr Tydfil which was visited by unimaginable tragedy 50 years ago today.

‘Using the word Chapel to describe a Church was foisted on us by the Protesters, to differentiate our respective places of worship.’

I’ve heard people say that, but I doubt it’s true.

The reality is that for centuries after the Reformation most Catholic Churches would have been Chapels ie part of a larger building, and most Chapels would have been Catholic, and I think that’s where the confusion/association between the words arose.

    She was taken aback.

Her dad was a teacher in a school not far away at the time, him along wth many others helped to get the bodies out.

Sadly all lost bar a few.

My memory is that the Parkhead Stadium Statin was at the Lisbon Lions stand side of the ground next to a paint manufacturing premises, behind the school. The line then came overground but under Helenvale street as it proceeded eastwards. I think that the underground solum of the track still exists under the new buildings on the south side of London Road going towards Bridgeton. But the new builds may have rendered reintroduction of some kind of shuttle prohibitively expensive.

    Brings back memories. Hail, hail

  8. As a child growing up in Coatbridge, it was always Parkhead and Chapel. To be honest, the first time I heard anyone take issue with the name of the ground was Sean Connery who said it was always “Celtic Psrk” for him and not “Parkhead”

    Ernie,

Obviously it was only after the Reformation that it became an issue.

There were chapels, small private places of worship for the gentry and other private communities.

Beyond that, there were cathedrals and churches.

    Chapels were specific places.

After the Ref., various sects sprung up.

In our own sphere, there was the CoS, CoE. CoI,

Apart from Scotland, who also took the title of Kirk, they all called their buildings churches.

Catholics, except through not knowing any better, never referred to house of God as Chapel.

It is just grammatically incorrect………and they stole not only our buildings, but their name, too….so there!

  13. Off course since E=MC2. ..then dark energy and dark matter are just different manifestations of our quest to tarmac over the good intentioned road to hell.

But we probably all know that.

    Sipsini,

It was unforgettably harrowing to watch and listen to reports of Aberfan via television.

What scars those who were at the scene carried throughout their lives we cannot imagine.

Thoughts with Lynne’s father and hope that one day he will have peace.

  16. Episcopal Church where I stay has a Lady Chapel with a

great big statue of Our Lady. That took me by surprise.

Like being at a Catholic Mass really (the order of the mass)

apart from the dour hymns. All that Thou and Thee stuff.

So chapels aren’t just for Catholics.

  19. Sipsini

Just read your post about Aberfan. I can remember it well in 1966. My Dad had been made temporarily redundant on condition that he return to work after a certain period of time, I know, I know, crazy as it seems!

I came home from school one night, S3 St. Pat’s Coatbridge, and my Dad was watching the telly and told me that there had been a terrible thing had happened in a small, Welsh mining village called Aberfan. We sat together watching the telly as the full extent of the tragedy unfolded. Absolutely terrible.

In the ensuing days, one of the things that sticks out in my mind is a young Princess Anne (18 years old) appealing for people to send children’s toys to the village. I thought how stupid was that when almost every child had been wiped out. I wondered what the hell her advisors were thinking about. Then I grew up and realised that she had probably had the best of intentions but was too young to think clearly.

In the Kirkwood area of Coatbridge, we also had a huge coal bing which nearly every kid played on. We didn’t realise the danger.

Aberfan was a shocking, terrible tragedy and it was a disgrace the NCB used money from the disaster fund to remove coal bings throughout the country.

  20. Dallas.

The Gladbach fans I spoke to disliked them and Bayern. They reckon BMG are about 8/9th biggest club in Germany and surprisingly say Frankfurt and Koln are 3 and 4, after the big two.

    Hail Hail.

  24. Chapel=small church

Small minority religion (catholic) had no need for a large church.

After saying mass was no longer a crime and as there were no priests, the nearest(catholic) country to re-stock so to speak was Ireland- hence the large amount of Irish priests here in Scotland.

Training for the priesthood was also banned, hence the Scots college in Rome- still there I think, built just after the reformation.

Good news about your son getting his chance with Cumbernauld United (Tony was manager there for a time). I hope they win. I saw Glencairn lose three nil at home to Clydebank last season. If Glencairn haven’t improved , Cumbernauld should win.
