Fan power begins to flex its muscle

1098

I am sure Neil Doncaster’s job is full of stresses and strains but this week will probably be a breeze.  Fans of every club in the league appear to be in uproar at the resolutions for an Insolvency Transfer Event to be voted on later this month. Infuriating everyone is surely better than infuriating most but leaving one group happy.

Fans of 11 SPL clubs have reacted in horror that the league seek to introduce a facility to allow a liquidated club to phoenix straight back into the top tier of Scottish football.  Fans of Rangers, while along with administrators and bidders for the club are publicly opposed to liquidation, are outraged that this new facility to allow a new club entry to the SPL should carry a sporting and financial inhibitor.

For clarification: the inhibitor is there to ensure clubs have a modicum of moral hazard against gaining an unfair advantage before ditching creditors and their old skins, and emerging in the SPL with player registrations from another club but without the debts or consequences of mismanagement.

Rangers US and Singapore based bidders seem unperturbed by the proposals.  Paul Murray’s Blue Knights consortium has curiously lost its tongue.  Maybe this helps explain all those years when the EBTs were unopposed by the former Rangers board.  Silence, not even an utterance!

There remains three possible outcomes to this issue:

The proposed SPL resolutions will be passed, allowing a Newco straight entry to the League.

The resolutions will fail and the SPL board will vote a Newco into the league anyway.

The resolutions will fail and the SPL board will deny Newco a place in the league.

Celtic Quick News first flagged this scenario in October last year when we predicted Newco would be given a parachute into the SPL, opposed only by Celtic.  As the key resolution (2A) requires only 8 votes I still expect this to happen, despite the ‘Bring it on’ view of many Rangers fans to the prospect of starting again from Division Three.

As the financial penalty resolution (2B) requires 11 votes I expect this to fail and no financial penalties to be imposed.

The question for Kilmarnock, Dunfermline, St Mirren, Inverness, Motherwell, St Johnstone, Hibs and Kilmarnock (don’t tell me they’ll not try to get two votes, they have a huge mountain of debt to service and have every right to demand two votes) is, will they listen to their fans or their bank manager?

Dundee United and Hearts, like North Korea, appear convinced of their own superior wisdom and, like a North Korean missile, could head off in any random direction to demonstrate their contempt for clubs scared of providing satirists with material.  They could easily vote themselves into a Gorgie-Tannadice League, if they could agree on a Gorgie-Tannadice/Tannadice-Gorgie naming convention.

For now, if you care about any of this, participate in the online SPL Fan Survey.  We’ll soon find out who runs Scottish football, fans or the Bank of Scotland! One additional point about democracy, it carries responsibility. In this instance, stopping Newco means fans of all remaining clubs have to step forward in increasing numbers to buy season tickets. This is the cost of sporting integrity.

  5. i think another thing for clubs to remember is that RFC supporters are threatening to boycott away games next year, if they allow these rules to be applied to let them into the spl. by my estimate they have just given the spl clubs more reason to refuse entry after, have they no?

I’ve re-read that live update a few times.

What I remember most about my feelings was they were driven by a few snippets I had heard about extra-curricular activities. I was worried and a tad annoyed that some of the coaching staff and a few of the players were literally p***ing away their chance to be part of Celtic. And I didn’t want my good memories tarnished by more recent bad ones.

The coaching team still make errors. The team do too. They still have the ability to disappoint – but like a loved family member, that stems from my expectations and my hope for them.

I cried last week listening to Neil Lennon. Because he got what he deserved and yet was eloquent in his expression of it.

I too hope to be less vociferous in the future, but I’d be daft to promise that. I respect the calm heads and am envious too. But I know I’m not that guy.

The only time I seem to have that presence about me is when Cara falls off her bike or falls out with her best pal – I seem to be able to take a relaxed long term view when stuff like that happens…

… But come whistle time tomorrow, I’ll be a daft wee bhoy watching a game as if his life depended on it…

    I don’t think I’d have it any other way…

  10. Top of the morning to you all from a sunny but chilly Fife.

This from Alex Thomson’s blog about HMRC getting lobbied by politicians. Here are three for starters. My MSP is here. John Park. I will need to be having a few words in his shell-like:-

“For instance John Park, member for Mid-Scotland and Fife wrote on 10 April: “…I would urge you to consider bids that not only ensure the maximum return for creditors but that also seek to avoid liquidation so the impact on the club, it’s (sic) employees and the game more generally in Scotland is kept to a minimum.”

On 7 April Joan McAlpine, MSP for South of Scotland wrote to Duff and Phelps saying: “I am…asking you to consider bids that propose a CVA and rule out any that put the club at risk of liquidation.”

Murdo Fraser, MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife wrote much the same thing in early April. So there’s a sudden coincidence of timing and intent. Various voices have been raised from a number of quarters that MSPs should not be interfering in the work of the administrators under any circumstances. And particularly not on matters that might – on the face of it lie outside their constituency.

A particular Rule for MSPs’ conduct was drawn to my attention: Rule 8.1.4 of the MSPs’ Code of Conduct states “An MSP must not deal with a matter relating to a constituency case or constituency issue out with the member’s constituency or region (as the case may be) unless by prior agreement.”

That was an interesting thread you posted. I must admit I had forgotten how personal and vitriolic some of that was but I remember it as being highly judgemental.

As well as Finbar 67, I would commend SOAL, Big Nan and Praecepta for showing faith.

I am honestly not one for saying “I told you so” and, like Auldheid received in that thread, I got some personal drunken stuff directed at me, from a regular continuing poster, when Gordon Strachan lost his only league. It does not mean a great deal in the big picture.

I would give a bye to many of the critical posters for two reasons. One, there was a reason to be annoyed; we were 3:0 down to Killie at half time and a big gap was growing in our points tally. A lot of coachable faults were not being corrected; defence of throw-ins (it was not an error when Killie kicked the ball out for a shy straight from kick off; it was tactical) and use of a defensive midfielder to protect the CBs. However, I would criticise the finality of the judgementalists because we were only in mid-October and we had had a good winning record under Neil apart from this August to October period.

I hope some of our “lighthouse” posters will develop some patience and perspective but they were not wholly wrong. There were things to be fixed and, by Lenny, we fixed them.

I’d also note that there is a kind of zeitgeist amongst the match day posters and it is not limited to that Killie game. You could parody the CQN match day posts as follows:-

“Punter A- Have you seen the team selection. FFS I cannae believe Lenny’s still picking player X and no picking player Y

Punter B- You’re quite right! Will he never learn

Pretendy Californian Poster- So Lenny is still ignoring my perspicacity and picking the duffers and no the brammers.

Well, after we lose this one, he might learn better or we’ll have to consider his contract

    (Game starts)

Punter A- We’re no playing well

Punter B- This looks like a disaster in the making

Pretendy Californian- Change it Lenny. get the guys on that I told you to put on

    (Player X scores)

Punter A- Brilliant! Mon the Hoops

Punter B- Good on you Lenny! You da man!

Pretendy Californian- G’night Shuggie McGlumpher, wherever you are”

As you can see, MWD, I do not treat the whole thing completely seriously. Seems to have been a lot of poster names in that Killie thread that we’ve not seen since. Wonder why?

Two races of interest on a cracking afternoon’s racing. There may be one further bet before 1pm.

1.45 Aintree Aland Islands 4pts win @ 10/1 (Stan James, BetPack, 9/1 Generally, get guaranteed)

I really have to prove I’ve done my homework here, because Henry has accused me of tipping the “sexy horse” in the race and I can see what he means. However, I had Aland Islands marked down as a future Grade 1 winner as soon as he crossed the line at Doncaster last time out. He is a smashing looking son of Stowaway, a sire who is becoming very popular as a National Hunt stallion, his notable progeny including the likes of Western Leader and Champion Bumper winner Champagne Fever from limited opportunities. The selection is the first horse J.P. McManus has had in training with Tim Vaughan, and I find it interesting that Vaughan, having spoken with J.P.’s racing manager Frank Berry recently, decided to campaign the horse with Aintree and Punchestown in mind. Entries in two Grade 1’s at the latter venue would suggest they feel they have a good prospect on their hands. Aland Islands fairly slammed Donald McCain’s Amron Lad last time out, giving him 10lb in the process. The fact that that rival won his Novice by nine lengths next time out suggests the form has some substance to it.

A sexy profile it might be, but the horse finds plenty for pressure too and he is fully eighteen times the price of Simonsig, whom I still have a few question marks about. I have yet to see Simonsig find anything off the bridle when challenged, he is a quickener with loads of speed and class, but I think he will get found out at some stage. I have reservations about the strength of the Neptune form and I am quite keen to take him on at 1/2 today. I think Aland Islands is the value here, and even if he does not win today, I think he will land a big race sooner rather than later.

4.15 Aintree John Smith’s Grand National Handicap Chase

Organisedconfusion 2pts win @ 25/1 (StanJames, BetPack, Sportingbet, 20/1 Generally, get guaranteed)

West End Rocker 2pts win @ 16/1 (Corals, 14/1 Generally, get guaranteed)

Calgary Bay 2pts win @ 40/1 (Generally, get guaranteed)

Three against the field here. Organisedconfusion proved his stamina last year when comfortably landing the Irish National in taking style. He has a nice weight, has been laid out for the race, and his pilot Nina Carberry has an excellent completion record over these fences. He fails on the age stat because he is only a seven year old, but the breed as a whole is becoming more precocious in my view, and with little doubt about his stamina, a chance is taken on that score.

West End Rocker won the Becher Chase last year, and jumped well in last year’s National before being brought down, so he has solid Aintree credentials. He is well weighted off 10-12, and represents a stable whose horses have been in winning form here this week. His underrated jockey is 4/5 on him, and he appeals as likely to run a very big race. More rain would help his cause, but I think he might get away with the ground and so does his trainer.

Calgary Bay gave Shakalakaboomboom plenty of weight and a beating when lumping 11-12 to victory at Doncaster in a decent contest earlier this year. I find it odd that he is three times the price of that rival, and at 40/1 I think the market has grossly underestimated his chances. He has to carry 11-6, but he has proven weight carrying credentials and he is classier than most of these. His trainer has had a really good year, the horse has won his last two starts, and he was happy enough to jump the rest of this course last year after he had fallen at the fourth. A chance is taken that he is on a going day; if he jumps around he has the class to go close.

    Strange feeling this is.

93% of fans want the Huns into Div. 3, 55% will turn their back on the game if this doesn’t happen.

So the huns get relegated to SFL3 and everybody assumes they will be back in the SPL in 3 years.

So what if the Celtic fans clubs together and we also buy a div 3 club like Clyde and then we manage to get some decent players on loan from friendly clubs and get promoted instead of the huns!! So we get to division 2, we need to hang about for a season for them to come up again!!!
