Fan power begins to flex its muscle

1098

I am sure Neil Doncaster’s job is full of stresses and strains but this week will probably be a breeze.  Fans of every club in the league appear to be in uproar at the resolutions for an Insolvency Transfer Event to be voted on later this month. Infuriating everyone is surely better than infuriating most but leaving one group happy.

Fans of 11 SPL clubs have reacted in horror that the league seek to introduce a facility to allow a liquidated club to phoenix straight back into the top tier of Scottish football.  Fans of Rangers, while along with administrators and bidders for the club are publicly opposed to liquidation, are outraged that this new facility to allow a new club entry to the SPL should carry a sporting and financial inhibitor.

For clarification: the inhibitor is there to ensure clubs have a modicum of moral hazard against gaining an unfair advantage before ditching creditors and their old skins, and emerging in the SPL with player registrations from another club but without the debts or consequences of mismanagement.

Rangers US and Singapore based bidders seem unperturbed by the proposals.  Paul Murray’s Blue Knights consortium has curiously lost its tongue.  Maybe this helps explain all those years when the EBTs were unopposed by the former Rangers board.  Silence, not even an utterance!

There remains three possible outcomes to this issue:

The proposed SPL resolutions will be passed, allowing a Newco straight entry to the League.

The resolutions will fail and the SPL board will vote a Newco into the league anyway.

The resolutions will fail and the SPL board will deny Newco a place in the league.

Celtic Quick News first flagged this scenario in October last year when we predicted Newco would be given a parachute into the SPL, opposed only by Celtic.  As the key resolution (2A) requires only 8 votes I still expect this to happen, despite the ‘Bring it on’ view of many Rangers fans to the prospect of starting again from Division Three.

As the financial penalty resolution (2B) requires 11 votes I expect this to fail and no financial penalties to be imposed.

The question for Kilmarnock, Dunfermline, St Mirren, Inverness, Motherwell, St Johnstone, Hibs and Kilmarnock (don’t tell me they’ll not try to get two votes, they have a huge mountain of debt to service and have every right to demand two votes) is, will they listen to their fans or their bank manager?

Dundee United and Hearts, like North Korea, appear convinced of their own superior wisdom and, like a North Korean missile, could head off in any random direction to demonstrate their contempt for clubs scared of providing satirists with material.  They could easily vote themselves into a Gorgie-Tannadice League, if they could agree on a Gorgie-Tannadice/Tannadice-Gorgie naming convention.

For now, if you care about any of this, participate in the online SPL Fan Survey.  We’ll soon find out who runs Scottish football, fans or the Bank of Scotland! One additional point about democracy, it carries responsibility. In this instance, stopping Newco means fans of all remaining clubs have to step forward in increasing numbers to buy season tickets. This is the cost of sporting integrity.

Email sky sports and tell them that a newco rangers in the SPL after liquidation will result in you cancelling your sky sports package!

That is what the SFA and SPL are saying is the reason why a newco must stay!

Threaten to take the money from sky and they will take the money from the SPL

Me too. I will pay no attention to a Celtic which continues to play in a corrupt and diseased set up which is nothing more than a Rangers protection scam . I will cancel my Celtic TV subscription.

I will watch /support Celtic playing in Europe [ assuming that the SFA don’t create a wee rule decreeing that only Huns [ big and small ] get to represent Hunland in Europe]

  6. I will be up for the game against Hearts on May 13th with totally hooked new hooplet and can make BB’s for a beer after game if anyone is erm game.

Don’t look for EUFA’s useful input any time soon. As I posted yesterday the morally razor-sharp UEFA fined Man City £8000 more for kicking of a Europa game ONE MINUTE late than they did Porto who’s fans had racially abused Balotelli. EUFA are a joke and have been for decades. Remember Rapid Vienna? Remember a Glasgow club playing Inter behind closed doors in Milan and sectarian singing taking place among the offical; Glasgow club’s party?

  8. Livingston chairman Gordon McDougall reckons Scottish football will lose all credibility if a Rangers newco are allowed to start afresh in the Scottish Premier League.

Under proposed SPL rule changes that will be considered on 30 April, the Ibrox club could remain in the top flight even if the debt-ridden outfit are liquidated.

Any new company, however, would be hit with a ten-point deduction for two consecutive seasons following the transfer of assets.

And the newco would face a 75 per cent reduction in SPL revenue for three straight campaigns.

Livingston were hit with a double relegation from the first division in 2009 after plunging into administration following the mismanagement of Angelo Massone, with McDougall picking up the pieces.

And the Lions shareholder insists the SPL would be setting a dangerous precedent if the dethroned champions are allowed straight back into the top flight as a new company.

He said: “If, for instance, they were liquidated and got to come back, what about other clubs that have severe debt built up just now?

“They could just say we’ll go to the wall and come back as whatever. And what credibility does that leave the game of football. You wouldn’t have any credibility at all.

“If Rangers go and they lose all their debt and nobody gets a penny, what happens then?

“There are clubs sitting just now that don’t know how to get out of their debt and then all of a sudden, Rangers go and come back as a newco.

“No matter what restrictions are put on them, they might be thinking ‘that’s worth it’. ‘All our debt it is gone’ but what does it do for the good of the game? It would set a precedent for other clubs to perhaps do the same thing to ease their own debt problems. The reputation of our game will certainly be tarnished if that happens.

“I’m not one that’s on a witch-hunt against Rangers, I understand the role they play in Scottish football.

“We had the double relegation to the third division when we went into administration and we just had to get on with it.

“I don’t want it to sound like Rangers should go to the third division although I’m sure the clubs in that division would welcome that.”

  9. ASonOfDan @ 13:21 :

Too many people dont remember Them in the years before they were funded by debt and the tax wheeze. It certainly wasn’t aware of how long they went without winning the league until someone mentioned it and I checked the history books. That might be part of the problem since those in charge lack the imagination to see what things may look like without Them. Last night on SSB they just talked about how crowds of Motherwell and Kilmarnock didn’t really grow even with successful teams and there is a belief that they (the GOT) just couldn’t survive without RFC no matter how toxic They were. Is this a form of Stockholm Syndrome?

  10. Afternoon, this is all truly pitiful, everyone bending over backwards to get tax-dodgers FC back into the league. Honestly, what more would they need to do for someone to turn round and say right, hold on a minute what are we thinking here? In fact bending over backwards would be no problem to these spineless individuals who are supposedly running our game. Shame on you, you owe us all an apology. The SFA probably know already that rankers have abused the contract system, and they postpone their findings to a later date. Your a bunch of cowards, how can we ever let you stick around and manage the game here in Scotland. Why should UEFA need to to get involved, you know what you need to do just now and shouldn’t need any direction from them at all. Ya bunch a wasters, i wouldn’t have you running a subbuteo league. Alright Paul How’s tricks ?

  12. sixtaeseven: No NewCo in SPL and it's Non-Negotiable! on

At the beginning of March, the SFA wrote to every club in Scotland (including RFCIA) demanding they own up if they made any secret player payments.

Stewart Regan’s letter insisted failure to respond by April 6 could result in sanctions.

    Emby hear anything recently?

Or is it being put on the back burner like the SPL invetigation into double contracts?

Maybe failure to repond to the “letter” will result in swift punishment.

On the other hand, actually using double contracts for a period of 20 years…

I am of the opinion that our representative on the SPL board is part of a 5 man or is it 6 … gave them whet they wanted by not putting any obstacles in their way or at the very least this has not been publicised.

Never interrupt your enemy while it is making a mistake.

I am hopeful that once the SFA ratify the SPL passed new proposals that UEFA will step in.

If they dont then ANYONE who puts money into the Scottish game afterwards is a RETARDED SCUMBAG as far as I am concerned

    HAil Hail

  15. There’s one thing puzzling me about these new proposals – if the SPL has an 11-1 majority requirement how can some of these proposals be voted through by 8-4? What is to stop a proposal on say an equal spread of the TV money or a change to a 16-team league being put forward on an 8-4, or 7-5 majority? am I missing something?

“Uefa is entirely confident that the Scottish FA will deal with this case in full compliance with the national club licensing regulations and in the spirit of Uefa’s club licensing and financial fair play regulations.”

why ‘in the spirit of Uefa’s club licensing’ etc? shoudl it not be in keeping with the Uefa rules?

  17. The Chairmen of the GOT have the power to achieve what they want with regards to a change in the voting structures

They could first of all ensure that Rangers Newco is denied a place in the SPL. Given that a CVA is highly unlikely to happen, this would leave SFL 3 as the only point of entry to senior football.

The clubs have a majority on the SPL board, if the GOT feel so strongly then they can deny Newco entry, as their representatives in Dundee Utd, St Johnstone and Motherwell could vote against entry. They will expect Celtic to vote against also, which means that they resolution will fail.

Celtic will vote against Newco. For 2 reasons, firstly because they themselves think that this is the correct thing to do, and secondly because they have no choice. They are aware that the support would see any vote for Newco as a treasonable act.

Having forced Newco to start in the SFL, then the GOT will have the voting power to force a voting structure change. They MAY have to forego SOME TV revenue for 3 years, however given the noises they have made over the voting, then they will be seen as mealy mouthed hypocrites if they don’t vote against Newco.

    My problem with this scenario……..

    They are mealy mouthed hypocrites.

And before fans of these clubs get up in arms, i would be saying exactly the same about my own club in the same circumstances. I have supported all Scottish clubs (except Rangers) when they play in Europe. I was delighted when Aberdeen beat Real Madrid and have cheered on Dundee Utd and Hibs and Hearts and the others.

However it’s time to stand up and be counted here. They can have a change to the voting structure or they can get a slice of a TV contract which allegedly is better with Rangers playing in the SPL. They can’t have both, so it’s time make your mind up time.

I hope grassroot fans do flex their muscles and then some… It maybe the only way to save the game in Scotland from the short term myopic self interests of the MSM and officialdom. We all know that shenanigans have occurred over the years, but current events eclipse that. I imagine, and hope that influential bloggers representing different teams are circling the wagons in a coordinated fashion, to protect the long term integrity and reputation of Scottish football. It might be the only route to saving it from entrenched self interest.

Justice must be seen to be done, that is the central and only issue of merit on the various agendas.
