Financial cost and prep for 2016

988

I reckoned Champions League participation was worth circa £22m to Celtic. By contrast, Europa League football will be worth less than a quarter of that. Ancillary income, such as retail and kiosk sales, will also suffer.

The challenge now is to improve the team without that income. This should not be impossible. Malmo managed it, and we’re not in a situation where the bank is hammering at the door. But what should be clear, is that the next five days represent the best chance to strengthen the team for next August’s qualifiers. There’s a notion that the biggest games of our season come early, but we’ve 11 months to plan for 2016’s biggest games.

Three things to remind you about:

Golfers: buy a raffle ticket for £1 to win a round of golf FOR FOUR PEOPLE at the magnificent Aberdour course in Fife. Competition ends on Saturday, get your tickets here!!! It’s offered by Taggsybhoy, in support of the Foundation.

Aberdour

There’s a Mary’s Meals collection from 1pm on the Celtic Way ahead of the game on Saturday. Ideally we’re looking for backpacks, but handtowels (the school kitchens you paid for have handwashing facilities and each child is given their own handtowel), pencils, rulers, etc.

If the kids got new kit for starting school last week, dig out the old stuff and bring it along.

Magners have kindly donated two Premium Seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s games. You can win the tickets by answering this question:

Who is Celtic’s top scorer this season?

Player’s surname in the SUBJECT line of your email to celticquicknews@gmail.com . Competition closes at 22:00 TONIGHT, so not a lot of time to enter.

No call today for a donation, go stick a £1 in Taggsy’s raffle instead. Thanks.

  1. Maybe we should sign the Malmo CEO or manager.

There’s not a lot in your post I’d disagree with.

Despite being a fan of Commons I think it was the right decision to leave him on the bench on Tuesday night. I do think though that he has much to offer this largely young, inexperienced squad.

I worry you’re proclaiming the likes of Tierney, O’Connell and Janko as heroes when they’re a long way from proving themselves as Celts.

At the moment Tierney isn’t better than Izzy, O’Connell isn’t better than our centre backs and Janko isn’t better than Lustig (when he’s fit!)

In the main we have good players at Celtic and it’s very difficult to be good enough to replace them.

I’d slowly introduce all of those you mentioned over the course of the season.

  12. For the EPL teams that hover in the lower half of that league, they are guaranteed not to be interested in the Europa League at all, so it should be no surprise that Stoke City declined when they had a choice.

Their pot of gold is at risk in every single EPL game they play because they need to stay up to stay in the money game.

QPR finished 20th in the EPL, got relegated and had Broadcast Revenue of 64.9 million.

Celtic’s TOTAL revenue was 64.7 million.

The vulnerable EPL clubs have to stay in the EPL and will never want to risk that by playing midweek games in Azerbaijan.

We are discussing the possibility that Celtic will get 8 million from the EL.

Southampton’s total revenue was 127 million.

Our best chance is to try and sign the best Scottish players and pay them big money. I mean even ones we missed like Rhodes, Robertson, the Fletchers etc. I think guys like Long and Coleman and McGeady could be put in the same bracket. This would give continuity but also a really good team.

We’ve done the sell-on thing. We’re all a bit bored with it now. We still buy our season tickets but it gets harder for dads to get our kids to go.

    A headline from today/FFS.

While the Lunkhead Celtic fans moan and whinge about a possible treble,a possible good run in the Europa League,we are getting this from a team who have beaten,Airdrie,Peterhead,Ayr,Alloa, and a teenage St Mirren side

Hibs should have put around 5 in their net,no exaggeration, and yet there are some on here who do read this and slaughter Celtic. The DR gave credence, since retracted to 9,from one Enlish loanee,I think, who said it was possible that the Huns could score 27 goals in one game !!!!!!!!.FFS.

Get a grip.We have a great chance of the treble, again,no matter what they try and tell us,and if we get a run in the Europa,if the fans turn up,fek them.

I actually spoke to a CQNr today, who is critical of the way we play and team structure, he doesn’t want to post it due to poor standard of responses he would receive – sad

    Another thing I would add

I do Not believe our failure to qualify last 2 years has cost us £30 – 50m

Figures being quoted for this year Champions league would have got us around £22m against EL getting us £9m so a £13m shortfall this year

Last year was less, as prize money not as great

So failure on last 2 seasons has cost us just over £20m ? In my humble opinion

Still significant though, and questions on why should be answered

Problem is it don’t work that way, I agree with you.

It’s the way of the modern game, players are chosen for the coach, if it doesn’t work out, get rid of the coach, it’s cheaper and easier than getting rid, or changing the players every time the coach is punted.

It’s been the way on the continent for yonks, and it’s been the way at Celtic for some time now, I personally don’t think it’s a bad thing, but I get iritated when people say the manager has the final; say when he patently doesn’t.

“Sorry I think I am misunderstanding you here, as Virgil has not played champions league football before. Was your point not to do with signing newbie’s and not playing “Champions league hardened players”?”

We were talking about gambling in CL qualification ties. VVD had played in two previous CL qualification campaigns. This was his 3rd such experience, his 9th CL qualifying tie. He had also played in our 2013/14 Group stages against Barca Milan and Ajax.

“Not really a funny way at all as you suggested the possibility of him getting injured.

I suppose you have proof of us factoring in or to use my word planning for this very scenario?”

The proof is that he was not sold before the tie. Unless that was a whim or an oversight, then it was planned. You started by asking why wait to sell him. I provided scenarios and reasons for doing so. That’s all you asked for.

“Johansen would fetch only half of what VVD will bring

There’s the 50% shortfall right there, you’ve identified it yourself. Oh and of course the players brought in would also have a resale value of some sort.”

Yes but you have now sold an averagely talented first team pick and you might still have a disgruntled VVD who wants higher wages or a club with a better chance in CL. You cannot assume that if we sell one of the chorus that the lead singer will want to stay.

The re-sale value depends on whether they were a success. How much did the £5m buy Scheidt go for?

“An “understanding”, you say? And that would have kept him focused? As I understand it, such an “understanding’ was already in place and yet VVD had a poor-ish game.”

So what are you suggesting here? Should we have sold him early in the window and bought more focused players?

No, I am suggesting that, there is an upside and a downside to each decision. There is no win:win. There is no guarantee. There are no no brainers.

I don’t really see your issue here at all. We already have an understanding with Virgil and this has no bearing whatsoever on speculating a future transfer fee.

It was your suggestion to sell him. My preference was to keep him and play him. He seemed focused enough in the previous 5 CL qualification ties but in the Malmo away tie, along with 9 or 10 other team mates, he did not show up. You can speculate that your unspecified replacement would have done better and, in that “what if” scenario, I cannot prove that you will have been wrong and you cannot prove that you would have been right. I can point to players brought in as early replacements, such as Moyokoulo in Karagandy, that were very poor and so is evidence against your contention but I am sure we could find some more rare instances of CL debutants hitting the ground running for Celtic.

“And yet it remains a better option than making things worse, which was my point. I don’t doubt the legitimacy of the concerns. My doubt is about the cocksuredness of the remedy proposed.”

How would spending money we could easily raise make things worse? I’d argue we made things worse by punting Matthews as soon as the window opened.

I think we both agree on not over stretching ourselves and anyone who thinks we should be spending money we don’t have is plainly wrong (Though I don’t see many of those on this blog).

However it’s clear we lack ambition, you may not agree with this assessment but spending net £1mil this summer, is not the actions of an ambitious club.

  31. When you have got a guy up frot like LG, who’s no better than Kenny MIller- how are you supposed to unpick the locks of the cream of European football?

No equivalent Naka or Lubo- no magic from anyone, nae wee dinks with the outside of the boot to set up something special, no reverse pass which no-one seen which unlocks a defence and leads to a goal.

Celtic were out as soon as the name Malmo emerged from the hat.

  32. The EL group stages will not be easy regardless of who we are drawn against. Not wanting to seem overly pessimistic but there are a number of teams In pots 1-3 who are more than capable of causing us major problems. Probably hold our own against those in pot 4. My hope and optimism were completely drained shortly after Malmo’s 1st goal on Tuesday evening.

  33. Celticrollercoaster

    Evening

Southampton have got money to burn and can cherry pick Celtic’s best players, but couldn’t beat a team called Midtjylland (no me neither)

It’s not a question of them being bad ( the same as Celtic ) but proof positive that despite buying and recycling millions of ££££’s in transfers (we don’t have access to) yet over two legs in European Cup Tie football you can lose to a side that scored twice, with only four attempts on goal.

The PL bonus is set by others at Celtic too highly IMHO, but is non sequitur in relation to what footballers we buy, and how we afford the link to the wage that the transfer fee creates.
