Gamboa, McCarthyism

1073

Celtic were looking for a right back throughout the second half of last term, but in the early weeks of his tenure, Brendan considered Mikael Lustig and Saidy Janko sufficient for the season ahead. Mikael is four years into a successful Celtic career but his fitness issues are of a persistent nature. We’ve reached Peak Swede.

Saidy missed lot of last season, also through injury, but he showed potential in his early outing this term. Aspirations for the lad crystallised in Israel last week, but not in a good way. I’m not going to defend him, because he was unquestionably poor, but agreement only exists on his poor showing because he was prepared to receive the ball so often. Not everyone in black that night was as keen to get on the end of a pass.

That opened the door for Cristian Gamboa, 26, second choice right back for West Brom. We’re very keen, apparently. West Brom manager, Tony Pulis, is less in need of a full back whose key attribute is getting forward at speed. Horses for course, I suppose, West Brom face different challenges than Celtic.

Two rumours have circulated this week: Celtic are looking for a midfield player and James McCarthy’s position at Everton is less secure than it was a year ago. Whoever has been linking these two facts has overreached – or made them up. Celtic have no idea where this one came from but were clear, there’s nothing in it.  Getting the right midfielder remains a task in hand, but usual caveats apply.  There are no guarantees we’ll land all our targets this summer.

  2. Belgian football journalist Sven Claes just told me that Celtic is not an option for Jason Denayer. Galatasaray, Sunderland and Southampton ( where he’d be re-united with VVD) are options.

Unless we’re pulling a flanker on them all!

  3. Not sure why we’d want Denayer back unless permanent. He was gash at the Euro’s as well.

  4. Evening/morniong all. Thats me just hame. Who`s Macjay fighting wae the night? Not read back. Has the wee right-back signed?

  5. We would all like to see this fabled”Holding midfielder, but where is he.Yo get real quality we are talking money out of our league. We all know that, right?.To get a promising kid in,ala Victor, would not help our CL progress.Mc Carthy is injured. Why we are even talking about him is a mystery.BR is the man in charge. If he can get someone in he thinks will help the team,he will.If not,it wont have anything to do with PL,or scrimping on the money.,or lack of effort.

This is the first 4 months of a possible 5 year journey, and already the grumblers have started. We have had a fantastic window up to now. There will, with a bit of patience,be many more.

    Hunderbirds ….

an interesting question, the answer to which has changed recently …

traditionally, Americans were much more inward looking (they know every state capital), but have little knowledge of what goes on outside of their borders (unless they were invading somewhere). Intensely, and painfully, patriotic.

Canadians were much more international in perspective. Proud to be Canadian, but saw Canada (and hence themselves) as part of a larger international picture…. so, Scottish- Canadian, or Italian Canadian …

I like most American people …. I never thought I would like NYC, but I LOVE it! and the people are actually quite friendly (Canadians tend to be quieter and not as outgoing)….

under the Harper Conservatives, Canada was moving much more towards becoming the ’51st state’, but since the Tories were kicked out, the air seems a bit fresher here once again.

other big difference between the two countries ….in America, the big thing is what college you attend… you could win the Noble prize, and walk on the moon, but you will always be ‘Mike … from Notre Dame’ (or whatever college you went to ) …. living next to them as long as I have, I still find that odd….

those are two things that pop into my head….

  16. Aye and do not tell me Elvis is deid…. A heard he was on trial in the deep sooth !!!

I’ve seen some greats over the years …. Ella and Ray Charles (both free shows too! great when you are a poor student!)_

…. my friend used to live a few doors down from Oscar Peterson, so we could sit in her back garden and hear him practice! Magic! Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan also sang at their house once…. blew my mind!

I know he has a reputation for being bad live, but one of the best shows I ever saw was Van the Man ..on the No Guru tour … mystical and magical show!

Saw the Trashcan Sinatras play a house party.

Bobby Bland … in a small dive bar …. he was 70ish… but cool as they come … the old women were throwing their knickers at him … he picked them up, wiped his brow with them… and the women swooned! magic!

10,000 Maniacs and Bebel Gilberto …. at both shows, the singes were lovely … fell in love with them both!

aztec camera and Lloyd cole … different venues on the same night … that was a great night!
