GRIFFITHS’ JOY STIFLED AT THE END

SCOTLAND 2 ENGLAND 2

AN extraordinary double free-kick from Leigh Griffiths looked like giving Scotland a famous World Cup win over England at Hampden tonight.

The Celtic striker hit two fabulous deadball efforts late in a dramatic encounter, but, amazingly, the defence went to sleep to allow Harry Kane to net a stoppage time leveller.

England, who looked sloppy throughout, took the lead through sub Alex Oxlade-Chamblerlain with a shot Craig Gordon should have saved in the 70th minute.

But Griffiths threw his nation a lifeline in the 86th minute after a Gary Cahill free-kick on Ryan Fraser.

From 30 yards out, the Hoops frontman sent a swirling left-foot effort wide of Joe Hart for the equaliser.

And three minutes later, Griffiths stage a marvellous action replay with another free-kick, this time to Hart’s right.

It looked like presenting Scotland with a well-earned three points until Charlie Mulgrew allowed a deep cross from the left to drop at the feet of Kane who sidefooted in the leveller.

Scotland ended up with a point – it should have been more.
