It all goes on the line at Hampden tomorrow

453

Games come thick and fast when you remain in all competitions in late October. The Allianz Arena got your heart beating on Wednesday, but much more is on the line at Hampden Park tomorrow: the first trophy of the season.

While our unbeaten domestic run goes on the line every game we play in Scotland, I wish we were not facing an occasion as important as a cup semi-final immediately after such a huge Champions League occasion. The timing of this game contributes towards Hibernian’s chances of success.

Neil Lennon’s Hibs have already won at Ibrox and drawn at Celtic Park this season. They genuinely have no fears about making the trip along the M8 to face Celtic at the national stadium. While Celtic players were draining every muscle of energy on Wednesday, Hibs players were resting in front of the television. They would have been tucked up in bed before Scott Brown and his team-mates got to Munich Airport and have enjoyed the benefit of a week’s uninterrupted training.

For Brendan Rodgers, the challenge is to pick a team with sufficient energy and ability to ensure a cup final appearance next month. He is able to make changes, which I expect to happen.

Moussa Dembele and Tom Rogic should start. Callum McGregor enjoys the Hamden stage and I would give him the nod ahead of Olivier Ntcham or Stuart Armstrong in the central mid berth, although Brendan will think otherwise.

We are the champions and treble winners for a reason: that we have unerringly raised our standards to meet every challenge presented. Tomorrow is another occasion when our deep reserved will be called upon.

Enjoy your day at Hampden.

    Jock Stein’s compromise.

He was astonished at a toss of a coin after the 3-0,0-3,3-3 draw with Benfica.

His initial suggestion was to decide the game on corners. Not the type when we can send on Charlie to place it from 40odd yards onto Billy’s head. The total number awarded during both legs.

That was too difficult, left open to argument. And what if it was a draw, the same in each game?

Jock’s alternative was penalties. I think Robert Kelly argued these points at the FIFA board meeting where Scotland has a permanent representative

The Scottish Cringe — and our performance on Wednesday.

Probably needs a lot of context and a bit of explanation.

My thoughts are two elements are a thing play.

One of them is part of a larger working class issue — a poverty of desire and a feeling that such things are not for the likes of us plus a specific element of localism that is very Scottish that goods things happen far away and local things that we see and experience all the time are pretty rubbish.

Things have improved and things have moved on — Thank Our own MK and his “GMB” campaign of the 1980’s that has generated a local tourist industry.

However the basic issue still remains — we are crap and “foreigners” are much better.

This issue is huge in Scottish football and that is why TFOD2.1 and the Sheep keep getting put out of the EuL by teams from farming hamlets in Scandinavia and Luxembourg.

However the issue is two dimensional in that they thought that because they are up against minnows then it should be an easy win. They turn up and think they have won before a ball is kicked, the opposition turn up for a game and surprise the SPL team with their effort and energy to the point that they cannot react or they react too late.

    Scottish cringe — two elements.

The first is that we are not good enough, we are in for a hiding and it is all about damage limitation.

The second is that we convince ourselves we are in with a chance, we have the game won but we turn up and are shocked when the opposition gets stuck in and give us a real game. Our response is the Version one of the Cringe and we get grubbed.

We need to learn to play the opposition we find, not what we want or what we expect by way of their reputation.

    Qarabag showed us the way.

It took us 30 minutes to get our head around Anderlecht.

If we had lost a goal we would have lost the game.

No matter we were a much better side.

The Scottish cringe would have claimed another victim.

  6. My friends in Celtic.

I think the phrase ” Travelling Drunks” was simply incorrect terminology. I took it that way , but then again I’m in the pub and I’m in Edinburgh.

It did however make me think about the thousands and thousands of Bayern supporters who will flood Glasgow with their Euro’s. Our drinking establishments especially will be well pleased.

Celtic , the club that keeps on giving. Financially Propping up Scottish Football and repeatedly giving a major boost to our economy.

I trust the thanks are in the post .

My point is not about the alcohol consumption either abroad or at home.

It relates to what does Eufa think about our exploits in Europe?

Is it about performance on the park or money over the bar?

We should be about our results on the park rather than how many we can attract for a day out.

The crowds in Munich offer no palliative to the poor performance we offered on the park.

If all Eufa can talk about is the crowd in the square then we are not a football team we are a curio show for the world to gawp at.

Does anyone know when the Away Goal Rule was introduced?

50 years ago tomorrow we lost 2-1 against Racing Club in Argentina, having taken a 1-0 lead over there. Had the away goal rule applied, we would have been World Club Champions and would not have had to take part in that farce of a play-off.

*My first memory of it was in the semis of the 1966 ECWC, I believe it had just been introduced that season and for that tournament only on a trial basis.

We had won the 1st Leg 1-0 (going on 5 or 6 BTW) at hame versus Liverpool and headed down tae Anfield for the replay

The much favoured scousers took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd half and with time running out the Buzz Bomb ran past Joe McBride who had flicked a heider over Ron Yeat’s head tae score the goal that would take us through tae the final at Hampden.

No goal and later the Belgian ref admitted that he felt intimidated by the Kop that night.

After the game the Big Mhan made a disparaging remark tae Shankly about having tae win a game that way, a year later Shanks would tell him he was immortal.

It is my honest opinion that we would have beaten Borussia Dortmund in the final although that may have affected our run in the Big Cup the following year as we would no longer be looked on as underdogs, a label which served us well at the time.

We were all German that night for the 1st time; the 2nd was the WC Final that summer. BTW for all their acclaim of being a huge support and Glasgow being only about 3 ½ hours away only approx 40,000 were at the final. Incidentally Liverpool’s equaliser was flagged off by the linesman as he deemed the ball had gone out of play before it was crossed over.

Away goals were introduced in the Big Cup the following year but only up to the semis, I recall a young bluenose engineer gloating about Dukla having scored at Parkheid only to be reminded they didnae count in this round,

  11. We pay big money for the privilege of being Football Supporters. We are entitled to have a few drinks & sing songs and generally enjoy the fringe benefits of attending a game.

That applies whether it’s Scottish based lads attending European or away Scottish Venues or Irish & other Nationalities traveling to Glasgow. Or indeed Glaswegians traveling from their homes to Celtic Park.

We have a good reputation of behaving ourselves regardless of what we drink so we have nothing to be ashamed of.

The fact that the Fans are having a Party in no way lessens the Professionalism of our Management & Team.

It is perfectly reasonable to have a good time & still be serious & committed fans.

The reason we were beaten in Munich is that Bayern have much better players than us, nothing to do with anything else.

  12. Don’t understand the relevance of Heidi Klum.

She comes from a place near Cologne. Nothing to do with Bavaria. Chalk and cheese. Totally different people and culture. Many would say Bavaria is in Germany through default.

In fact it’s worse that calling Lulu English.

    CQN, educating the masses :)))))))

  13. Not bothered about getting beaten and outplayed in Munich.

That’s what the ability and resources to buy elite talent gets you. For this reason I wouldn’t be to harsh on our players, as well as being streets ahead in their own league that allows for zero competition, and opponents that aspire to kicking an opponent over the ball. The bottom line is that Bayern Munich were faster, stronger, and a yard ahead of our players in anticipation. That’s not a criticism of Celtic, its resignation over the facts.

A quick gander at finances reveals the gulf between us and a team who have been allowed to run roughshod over the Bundesliga’s fair play rules, obviously to ensure at least one German team can compete with the oil Sheik’s cheque books of rival leagues.

Brendan has a plan, but I wouldn’t judge his success, or failure in that regard till the 2019/20 season.

  26. Q @ 3.59 II

Would peak GS have helped as well?

    Also FF in goals?

Just a case of getting everyone onto the park at the same time.

  27. Cant see JS being binned he has just signed a four year deal , good centre half when fit , Erik’s injury puzzles me must be much worse than thought, we are short at Centre Half, watching the under 19’s the other day they are not clever a defending crosses either. Work needed.

  28. My interpretation is that Brendan Rodgers has a long term plan. He doesn’t speak in code, listening to him I thought his pre-match interview was far more insightful than post match. He told the players to go out and play in his style so they can learn the level they need to be at for that style of play to be competitive at this level. He was prepared to lose and if you are going to lose then the choice is really what is the best lesson to learn. He feels that he is in year 2 of a journey that will stretch years ahead (his words, not my interpretation) and that the players need to play their game and learn the level that they need to achieve to get close to Pot 1 and Pot 2 teams.

I totally get the argument that we should have adapted to recognise our limitations, park the bus perhaps, play the odds on a stoic draw etc. In fact I am not even going to argue that it isn’t just as valid. But if all goes well and we drop into the UEFA will we be in a better position to go away from home to a Europa League standard team with the lesson we got from Wednesday, would we be planning to park the bus every time we go away, or would we be playing our own game away from home in Europe for the first time.

He’s decided to take the defeat playing our own game, taking the longer term view that this is the greater lesson to learn.

What I find lamentable in the media coverage is any ability to analyse the choices that were available and debate them like adults. It’s actually a cracking talking point for folk genuinely interested in dissecting it with mates over a beer or a coffee or whatever. We just get hardened positions and everyone else is wrong, it’s pathetic.

Honestly speaking I find that openness against the big teams sore to take, it hurts your pride but I’m prepared to accept that Brendan’s position is more learned than mine and if it’s about the long game I look forward to it immensely. If 0-5 to PSG it’s what it takes to have the balls to go to Brussels and win 3-0 it’s a new era of highs and lows in a new era of elite football.

And I think we’ll win at Celtic Park v Bayern. 3-2. A real classic.

  29. Go tell the Spartim on

I think that Brendan is getting miffed at the amount of missed games both Erik and Jozo have, i realise Big Tatum misses a few too (but we all know BR is a big fan of the belgian). i wouldnt be too surprised to see us go after 2 CB’s in January, or at least one in january and Caulker on a Bosman in the summer.

  30. BK @ 4.16

That level of detail and complexity is well beyond the playing staff he has available.

He was dealing with 11 footballers based in Scotland trying to get competitive in the ECL not some Kirov ballet improv group looking to expand their boundaries with a free flow routine.

His comments to my mind are a complete abrogation of his responsibilities as a manager who we pay to get results, play good football and make the most of our abilities and opportunities.

I have not heard that interview but if you comments are correct then he is a coward hiding behind the limitations of his players.

Wednesday was not some sort of discovery session for a team under pressure it was an opportunity to go out and show what we could do rather than find out what we couldn’t.

Suddenly the perceived obtuseness of CG kicking the ball out the park 5 times in a row all becomes clear — it was not rank stupidity it was him pushing his performance envelope.

The clouds are starting to gather.
