Kilmarnock 3-3 Celtic

1194

Celtic frittered away another two points at Kilmarnock this afternoon after a performance which ultimately showed depths of determination but was marked by shockingly bad organisation.

Kilmarnock’s opener in 25 minutes could not have been simpler.  An 80 yard high ball was collected on the edge of the Celtic penalty area by Heffernan, who turned and picked out the onrushing Dean Sheils, who was initially being marked by Beram Kayal but the Israeli failed to match Sheils run, allowing the Killie player time to pick his spot and score.

The home team were encouraged by the opening goal and continued to press forward.  Fraser Forster did well to turn over a blistering shot from Kelly which was destined for the top corner.  Kilmarnock’s pressure was rewarded on 40 minutes when Kayal and James Forrest stood off a ball conceding possession.  Sheils crossed for the offside Heffernan to score but the assistant referee didn’t flag so the goal stood.

Seconds before half time Charlie Mulgrew was short with a back pass and James Fowler chipped Forster to give Killie and three goal half time lead.

The first 28 minutes of the second half were miserable for Celtic as the team appeared resigned to a fate similar to the Celtic team which visited St Mirren Park in March 2010 but Anthony Stokes had other ideas.  Stokes missed what was surely the worst chance of his career early in the first half when the scores were still level, and saw a good penalty claim denied on 71 minutes, but instead of hiding he stepped forward.

James Forrest, who also stood up to be counted throughout, ran at the Killie midfield and was fouled 25 yards out.  Stokes struck the resultant free kick perfectly into the top left corner.

Two minutes later Stokes collected the ball from Ki 28 yards from goal in what seemed like a safe position but his swift turn and inch-perfect shot beat Jaakkola in the Kilmarnock goal.

Kilmarnock were now rattled and Celtic were level on 79 minutes.  Daniel Majstorovic got on the end of a long free kick at the back post and squared for Charlie Mulgrew who headed home.

Having scored three times within seven minutes and with over 10 minutes of the game remaining the Celtic support had reason to feel confident their team could collect all the points but it was Kilmarnock would should have tied up the win in the final minutes when Heffernan found himself unmarked inside the Celtic six yard box but headed over, however, the home team will be happy to have collected their first point in four games.

  1. I’m sick of saying where do we go from here ?

Why have a bunch of players who could easily have won the league last year lost the ability to win games to a variety of opposition ?

  2. SFTB

    As did I.

    But…

“We have received 27 appeals regarding this programme. As a result, we

consider that all these appeals should be consolidated and considered

together across the full range of the issues raised before making a

decision on their admissibility to the Editorial Standards Committee.”

makes me believe they are taking ever point made via all appeals into consideration rather than lump them all into 3 specific areas and ignoring the detail.

I’ll be disappointed if they do not come down on our side on admissibility (as they put it).

I see that…. it was fleeting in your post and i had to think twice before commenting on it, and i don’t mean to isolate it as you made good points as usual. But that word should never be used with Lenny’s name, it comes from the dark side, amigo.

    Guilty as charged.

A lot of what makes people angry on here, Board matters, press comments, taxi driver rumours etc; don’t interest me.

But what players do on the pitch reflect what is going on at training, which is where coaching staff should earn their corn in making players and playing units better.

Motivation, tactics, subs etc; are all important to a point but 90% of what we achieve is planned on the training ground. Our players have not tightened up on defence of aerial balls or throw-in ball protection over the past two weeks. Every player and coach is culpable in that.

But it is still October so we are not lost yet but the team this season is a pale shadow of what we saw emerging last year.

  6. pabloh_AKA_NEIL LENNON on

Would anyone on here drop kayal for the foreseeable future? He’s been disappointing recently and appears in a huff and likely to be sent off when on the park. I would also question his commitment.

Last year I thought he was a great player.

Maybe his dream really is to play for Bolton or west brom…

  7. Not at all happy with the team’s performance for the first hour and more of the game, shocking to think that it was 65 minutes before we had our first shot on target. I am, however, delighted with the fight back because I thought that this present Celtic team, perhaps, lacked that quality. Games are won and lost in midfield and our midfield was seriously outnumbered in the first half because we had two midfielders who did not perform. Sure the defence is not great but part of the job of being a midfielder is to protect your defence neither Ki or Kayal seem to have the desire to do that, for all his faults big Sammi would be better in midfield than either Ki or Kayal, at least the big man tracks back and helps out his defence and does not go into a huff despite the stick he takes from the fans. Big Victor should be in from the start next week.

Now some of today’s posts were shocking but this is nothing new on this site in recent times. For those guys who were posting that the league was over and that we would be 15 points behind the huns next week who is to say that come this time next Sunday we might actually be only 7 points behind the huns with a game in hand? This league has got a long way to go. What experience would you rather have had today – being 3 goals down and your team fighting back to gain a point or being 1 goal up with one minute to play and dropping 2 points after losing a last minute equaliser?

Looking forward to next Sunday as I am coming over with Mrs PMTYH and PMTYH Jr for a few days and will be taking in my first game since the Cup Final, both the wife and my son will be going to the game. It’s also the wife’s birthday that day so don’t say I don’t know how show a lady a good time.

    Hail! Hail!

  8. Not posted in ages cos Ive been so scunnerred at all the online ridicule of the huns financial plight, even though they continue to be top of the league but here goes…

Took my 9 year old to his first away game today for his birthday and he thoroughly enjoyed it (eventually) – the innocence of kids

I might be in a minority but I don’t think we should sack Lenny. We cant keep having an annual clear out when we get a new manager: 15 players out , 15 players in wont work. Lenny showed enough LAST season for us all to be 100% optimistic and confident going into this season, but we have wobbled badly & threatened to collapse totally. Lenny needs to get back his sharp decision-making, eg bringing on Samy at Ibrox to play as a forward when we were down to 10 men, pushing them onto the back foot & taking NoSurname by surprise

There are a few bad apples in this team: Kayal defo seems to be one. At last he got the captaincy removed and at last he was subbed. Likewise Hooper, at last he got subbed. Finally Lenny is wakening up to a few a conclusions about some of these players. At last he made substitutions early enough in a game to affect the result.

Lenny must continue to make his own decisions and be brave: trust your swing ,as someone said recently.

There is no room for mistakes but we can still do this. Tony Mowbray looks like a good manager again at Boro, but he couldnt live with the media pressure here. Lenny can, and treats the media with the disdain & distrust they deserve. He knows what this season means to us. He will succeed .

Finally the supporters were great today, well done, it was very impressive, and it was the most I have enjoyed “supporting” my team in ages.

I believe – and Im away to read “Open Season” by George Galloway

That Kenny Shiels fella is a decent sort.He was the lone voice that defeated Lenny last season, along with Calderwood and Craig Brown to a certain extent.

He seemed to apply the usual “let them boot Sellic oot the park” and book Celtic players at will approach. Aye, we had massive faults, but we shouldn’t underestimate the effects that kind of subtle MIBery has on our gameplay.

You’ve hit the nail on the head there imo. This is where the board’s strategy fails dismally. We can get the best out of new players for a year, when they have come here on the promise of greener fields. After that, their spirit will go as the football in Scotland is utter mince. This Club should be a major achievement for players, but while we’re stuck in the SP Hell, we are on a hiding to nothing. We need out. Desperately.

I don’t want to enter an argument with you; the last time was over our appreciation of MacManus (in my case, the lack of it). I was one of the few who supported the likes of Telfer (and our latest whipping bhoy, Samaras). I think we have been right in signing players like Kayal and Ki, who both have great talent, as they have shown. Kayal, to me, is tailored made for the SPL; Ki, again to me, probably isn’t. The EPL obviously has its attraction and I guess players will use any means open to them to get there. Using us seems the latest. I can’t see that changing. For all the cries of rearing our own, they simply aren’t there, Lennoxtown or no Lennoxtown. There are very very few, if any SPL players I would want to sign. We must continue as we have been doing and hope we get a proper return. I find it a bit baffling that players like the above and and any others who hope to move to the EPL and don’t give their all. I think only the likes of Wolves will be interested in them. They seem totally unprofessional.

  25. This coming week will be the most important week of the season for Celtic and Neil Lennon. Had we lost today, Neil’s position would have been difficult and the media would have fanned the flames of discontent. However, at the end of the day we had made a great comeback and Rangers failed to press home their advantage.

However, the way that the game was played out – going 3-0 down in the first half – further exposed how fragile the team is after the defeats to St. J, Rangers and Hearts. It is obvious that there is a problem with certain players. I would say that the situation has now reached crisis point and this is when all managers have to prove themselves if they are to become a success. Failure to take decisive action will result in the manager failing and will lead to his dismissal. He needs to use what’s left of the weekend to decide on his course of action. He doesn’t need to do tough talking, he needs to do straight talking. He needs to address the squad and appraise them of the situation: what it means to be a Celtic player, what the club means to the supporters, a bit about the history of the club and that anything less than 100% commitment while wearing the Celtic jersey is unacceptable. He needs to tell everyone that immediate improvement is required and those who do not show it through lack of effort will be dispensed with. Anyone looking for a transfer will not play again and only players who show that they want to play for the Club and supporters will be considered for action. He needs to do this on Monday and monitor closely the performances in training throughout the week. He needs to tell them that the Europa Cup game will be a trial and anyone failing to give commitment will be in trouble and off loaded or banished to train alone. He needs to do the same with next week’s League game. Two strikes and your out. (You know what I mean by strikes in this situation).

In short he needs to sort it out.

He needs to do the same with next week’s League game. Two strikes and your out. (You know what I mean by strikes in this situation).

In short he needs to sort it out.

The “other results” make me feel worse. I still don’t think we will win the league and the fact that the others are screwing up only makes this worse.

Stephenpollock, it’s Kilmarnock who won their first point in four games, not Celtic.
