Ladbrokes SPFL use Level5 to dig into Celtic

656

Level 5, the PR company born out of the need to convince Newco fans to back one specific camp, have been given the Ladbrokes SPFL contract. Promotion of the SPFL is the responsibility of sponsor, Ladbrokes, who also pay for PR, this was not a decision by the league or member clubs.

Their brief is to manage the news and keep the words Ladbrokes SPFL in the news. Recent coverage has been a case in point.

Yesterday’s newspapers gave an excellent example of how this is operating.  Ladbrokes wanted their app promoted for free in the newspapers. Their Level 5 performed to task, the Evening Times ran with:

“Murdo was promoting a new Ladbrokes ’Track Your Acca’ app which allows punters to track their bets and cash out on the go – for full details log on to thegrid.ladbrokes.com”

While the Daily Record ran with:

“MacLeod was promoting a new Ladbrokes ‘Track Your Acca’ app that allows punters to track bets on the go – for full details log on to thegrid.ladbrokes.com”

Both a copy and paste from the press release.

Here’s the rub, though. The bait for both Ladbrokes adverts was Murdo having a go at two different Celtic players. The League’s sponsor is employing a PR company, who could have chosen any subject at 42 clubs, but they chose to have a dig at Celtic players.  Digging at Celtic players is one of the most reliable ways to ensure your comment runs in the newspapers.

That PR company just happens to be staffed by a former employee of a club who can hardly make a public comment without proclaiming their desire to bring down Celtic.

Ladbrokes got their promotion and two Celtic players were used as fuel, this is unacceptable. The League sponsor cannot employ a PR company who have enjoyed such a close relationship with a PR-dependent club, while undermining Celtic.

It is a fundamental conflict of interest and has to stop, Celtic cannot be cannon-fodder for the SPFL sponsor. Ladbrokes are representing the League on PR matters and cannot undermine the Celtic in this way.  The SPFL cannot allow their competition to be undermined by partisan promotion.

Let @Ladbrokes know your thoughts.

  2. I think the first order of business at the next Celtic Board meeting should be a resolution to inform Ladbrokes that they either get rid of Level 5 or their shops in CP are closed down. Besides that, they should suggest that Celtic supporters who like a bet do so with any group but Ladbrokes.

You say Neilson was critical of his players for allowing Celtic to score. Can you imagine what it would have been like on here if it had been Hearts who had scored them?.Thats the problem.Every goal scored is someones mistake,or not heading, tackling, otherwise,no goals would ever be scored. There were many on complaining about Hearts goal last night.Every week on Goals On Sunday, they show world class defenders making mistakes,in their opinion, and losing goals. Its an absolute nonsense.Cant be @rsed with it.

  10. I seldom listen to any “experts” talking about Scottish football. I either turn the sound down (TV) or turn it off (radio). Imo, people like Walker, MacLeod and Bonnar are the worst. They know that to get a career they need to do us down at every opportunity. People like McCann and Wilson who are said to be from Celtic supporting backgrounds know that they in particular need to show that they are “evenhanded”. Why Celtic would promote a book by Bonnar after the things he says every game baffles me.

  12. Thanks for the birthday wishes Bhoys, there’s no finer place for me to celebrate my wee day than on CQN.

CQN has been for the last six years a source of laughter, tears, joy and sometimes anger too:))

It’s been a well of information on all things Celtic and in times of trouble a wellspring of support and touching Celticness.

I’ve made friends on here that have nothing to do with cliques or any of that shite, just good Celtic men and women ready to stick their hands out to A Bhoy returning home.

CQN for all it’s ups and downs still remains to me my daily fix of Celtic and it’s supporters.

Thanks Paul 67 and to all the good people who daily fill this place with the spirit that is Glasgow Celtic.

  14. I gave up betting many many years ago when I realised it had become a bit of an addiction, so I can’t boycott anyone, I’ll send an e-mail anyway threatening a boycott.

The pain of Molde is fast disappearing but as we all know there is no middle ground when you follow Celtic, it’s either being ecstatic or distraught. For a long time last night that game could have gone either way, it’s OK now to look back and say we were comfortable winners but on another night that last minute goal from the corner could have dumped us out.

Brooney’s injury is a concern, when he doesn’t play we lack drive & tempo, we need to groom the new Brooney. Could it be Rogic or Armstrong. Armstrong didn’t get too much of a mention in the post game analysis as the spotlight was quite rightly on Rogic & Griffiths. I thought he put in a great shift last night and he might be the man to do Brooney’s job for us.

Following on from our discssion last night. Against Hearts at Tynecastle we had 56% possession, scored 2 excellent goals, lost 1 poor goal from a corner were without 2 x first choice picks – including Captain Brown.

Were you satisfied or do you think the 56% should have been converted into more goals for and 1 less against?

The labelling, like “uncle Tim”, is disgraceful.

but worse than that is the sheer bloody hypocrisy. The most, critical, vehement fickle critics of our club are our supporters. Disagree? well the next time you are on Cqn after a reverse, read the comments. some would shame Keeping.

If you go to the game, you’ll find further evidence.

One thing that has always got to me is how our supporters follow the media led agenda.

  18. Paul67,

The decision by Ladbrokes to appoint level 5 to run promotion of the SPFL would have been an easy one to make.

The only question they needed ask was……

Who is presently serving the finest succulent lamb and who has the most journalists/broadcasters in their back pocket?

Very disappointed to see so many BBC Scotland men with such a close relationship to the Sevco PR machine.

  19. I agree 100% about Ladbrokes and Low Level 5.The only thing that worries me is that its beginning to sound a bit like Hun Media. How many boycotts ,or petitions,is that now,or in the recent past, that we are instigating,or involved in?.Some even suggesting boycotting Celtic Park, for Gods sake.

Again,I agree, apart with the CP nonsense,on the issues, but you see what I mean.

  20. I assume that if Paul67 is on the case….the powers that be at CP will be aware of Mr Ladbrokes shenanigans.

Well said Paul; the ‘likes a flutter’ gene that my gran passed onto my dad skipped a generation with me but there are lots of Tims who are keen on losin’ their ole shirt and they should take the business elsewhere.

The whole relationship with sport and gambling is potentially corrosive but this seems to be taking it to another level.

What to me is very disappointing is how some of the ‘newer’ companies in the promotion of football in Scotland [BT,Ladbrokes] have been sucked into the same ole Hunguffery, and don’t want to treat Celtic fairly.

This is all I’m asking for- not special treatment [ we’re big enough to look after ourselves] but a fair crack of the whip.

Anyways, on a happier note I saw wee flashes of Maradona vs T. Butcher et al in the Griffalo’s goal last night.

For those, like myself, who agree with Paul`s suggestion, here is one way to make your point:

email the PR Team at public.relations@ladbrokes.co.uk.

I agree that contact would be more effective than a boycott. I am going to include BRT&H`s Benfica link in my email. That was a fantastic piece of promotion. Probably the best I have seen.

    JJ

  24. Perhaps rather than a boycott, the best way to deal with Ladbrokes is to place only winning bets with them, and place all your losing bets with their competitors.

That way they lose out and the other bookies clean up.

    ——————————————————————————————–

BCW – I don’t disagree that some of the criticism from fans is way over the top. You only have to look at the pages of comments on CQN when we lose versus half as much when we win – even when we beat a team 5-0.

However, the difference is that the ex-players we’re talking about were well-remunerated by the fans who payed their wages for years as players – some even had testemonial cash – and they are now happy to take pot-shots at Celtic and make money on the back of it. I think they are fair game for criticism for this. Again – I agree that some of the name-calling is unneccessary. But I’m sure Murdo, Pat, Andy and Davie are immune to it as they laugh all the way to the bank with our cash.

BTW – it may be my imagination but the ex-huns don’t need to do this because news stories about huns are overwhelmingly positive – even as the new club gets flushed down the pan.

    Would you agree?

I agree, but that was not the point I was making. If A Hearts player had gone by our defence twice,as LG did, there would have been chaos on here, blaming everyone. We lost a goal from a corner in a chaotic goal line mess, but no one mentions the fantastic corner kick.Seems to be the way it is now.A media driven fault finding excercise that gives them something else to write about, that sadly many have adopted.
