League Cups come to Celtic in batches. We won our first in 1956 after a replay against Partick Thistle (revenge would be sweet for them) and retained the trophy a year later by the biggest winning margin in British final history, against Rangers (Originals). Then nothing until Jock Stein’s arrival.
Jock set the record for consecutive wins of this trophy, as Celtic took it home in his first five seasons. He went straight to setting the record for losing finals at four in a row. At that time, Celtic reached eight finals, winning only once.
Over a 23 period, between 1974 and 1997, we won it only once, a memorable final in season ’82-’83, again against the Originals. At the time, the ’97 final win over Dundee United felt significant. We were competitive in the league and won our second trophy in nine years, the league title followed six months later.
The contrast in sentiment between late 1997 and the win over Aberdeen in the early months of 2000 was vast. We traipsed out of Hampden after that game knowing we’d won a consolation prize; the league was already destined to go elsewhere. Two months later, Martin O’Neill was in charge of everything. In his inaugural season he won our third treble, taking the League Cup against Kilmarnock in what Archie Macpherson immediately named, ‘The Henrik Larsson Final’.
‘7’ was on all Celtic players shorts in the final against Dunfermline in 2006, a game played days after the death of Jimmy Johnstone. For a people communally bereaved, it was one the players needed to win.
A couple of other victories came before the arrival of Brendan Rodgers in 2016 and the start of the Quadruple Treble. A 3-0 win over Aberdeen, our 100th major trophy, set the tone for the most dominant period any club has enjoyed in Scottish football, or pretty much anywhere.
Remarkably, since 2013 Ross County are the only team to have beaten Celtic at any stage of the League Cup. First, on their way to winning the trophy in 2016 (Celtic reduced to 10 men), then in a behind closed doors fixture in 2020. Fortunately for our sakes, County are already out of the competition.

How many sleeps?
HH!
5 sleeps it is then.
You’re up early today Aipple.
Did you piss the bed,lol.
Paul is stealing my patter now i use the term “original rangers” all the time.
PHILCOOL
Was up way too early today.
I am reading that a meteorite the size of a Corgi has hit Texas. When did we start measuring space debris in terms of dugs?
St Tams
Some nice cafes on Victoria Road for sit in meals. Post match, safer to go back to Victoria road and the Queens Park Cafe, Victoria Bar and Neesons on Allison Street. Penny Farthing on Cathcart Road, International on Aitkenhead Road are OK as well. Don’t go to the Star Bar as it can be dodgy after hun games. Regards- Johnny, Govanhill director of tourism.
We’ve all seen enough games against the original rangers and the new version to know surprise results happen regularly. Only a few weeks ago, Ange started Bernabei and Jamesie against them and it was like playing with nine men. Big Joe didn’t help anyone’s blood pressure with his footballing skills either.
Play the best team, don’t fanny about at the back and don’t give Morelos, Sakala or Kent any chances to give the VAR man a penalty decision.
3-2 Celtic.
SFTB – maybe it slipped Lizzie’s leash.
Our respective league positions heaps most of the pressure on to the huns for me.
BBC website has a piece about the relegation battle. Interesting to see that St Johnstone were not mentioned in the article, presumably reckoning (probably correctly) that being ten points off the bottom (and only nine off the play-off spot) that they are in no danger of being caught.
Yet any time you hear Jabba Mk2 and his band of Sevco-boosting johnnies speaking about the situation at the top of the league, where the second-placed team is the same distance behind the leaders, it is constantly referred to as a “title race”. Make up your minds, guys!

‘The late Rangers’ also has a nice ring to it.

Jamesie played and JJ came on (not Bernabei btw) as we had a bug that ravaged the squad and it felt like last men standing. The huns are putting great merit in that result and I think will be subjected to a fitter, better and more balanced team than the one we had out last time.
Brainfarts happen but expect the occassion to bring the best out of big Joe. We’re favourites to win but as always I’ll watch without overconfidence (and factor in the cheating refs) at 3pm Sunday, hoping we turn up.
HH
as does “second rangers” when talking about the current entity
SFTB, was looking after the Corgis not one of Randy Andy’s new jobs, so that he could be seen to be earning his Social? If that’s one of them landed in the US of A is that his excuse to go looking for …. ‘something’ …..over there?
Aipple you can never get up early enough imo.

Afternoon AD .
The pressure is definitely on them, lose and the treble is on ……
Bring it home …..
IF Celtic GUB the Huns with a BIG SCORE……it could totally derail the Huns for the rest of the season ?
I certainly hope so, although ANY kind of Celtic VICTORY will do for me…….My Bets are NOT IMPORTANT….They are just a bit of added FUN.
HH.
Korgis sized meteorites, never knew that , but..
‘Everyone’s Gotta Learn Sometime’
ANGE will leave Celtic at the end of the season – that’s the sensational report from Australia.
have we got a big game coming up ? ,I’m sure somebody posted this headline would be the case at some point this week.
Dearie me.
Corgis in space now is it?
At least it wasn’t a Xoloitzcuintli sized meteorite. Those things look otherworldly.

Once again, sevco will play for set pieces in and around the box.

We have nothing to rear from them on Sunday. Biggest problem will be officials plus Var.
So, as usual, we will be playing against around 15 people.
What’s new eh
