McGhee, the old faux

504

Mark McGhee put on a stunning display as a faux hard man last night. After being escorted from the touchline by a police officer at Pittodrie, the Motherwell manager didn’t take well to his antics being recorded for posterity on video by an Aberdeen fan.

His unfocussed irritation transformed into confrontational anger towards the fan, but only after McGhee had made eye contact with a rapidly approaching Aberdeen official, who was a split second from intervening on his behalf.

This is the offline equivalent of the keyboard hard man. It’s just someone working through their issues in what feels like a real confrontation, but is actually relatively safe environment. Mark just needs a hug. Hug Mark, if you see him.

Speaking to the media afterwards McGhee then went into full irony mode:

“I’m absolutely disgusted and horrified by the attitude of the fourth official. Before a ball was kicked, he was causing issues that didn’t exist.”

Like creating a scene when a visiting goalkeeper warms up in front of his assigned goals, perhaps. There followed an explicit threat to get his lawyers involved, which is almost certainly faux bluster.

Many years ago Dundee United and Scotland assistant manager Jim McLean resigned from his SFA post when he ran into conflict with the Association. McGhee should consider doing likewise this morning. But first he needs a hug. Someone?

Great to see Ryan Christie making his mark at Aberdeen, the finish for his goal last night is worth catching, if you haven’t see it yet.

For those familiar with the Doolough Famine Commemoration Walk, Radio 4 has a short programme, coming up at 1500 pm, datailing the history of the original walk by the villagers of Louisburg to plead for famine relief in County Mayo in March 1849.

  3. All this talk of the New Road – it’s like League of Gentlemen have taken over the blog.

EK is local town – for local people. There’s nothing for you here….

  4. Like us to this very day our hero still hurts, if only Henri if only mate.

CELTIC legend Henrik Larsson has revealed he still feels pain at the Hoops’ Uefa Cup final defeat even though it was 14 years ago.

The Swedish superstar scored twice against Jose Mourinho’s Porto in the final in Seville, but Celtic still lost 3-2 in extra-time after finishing the game with only 10 men following Bobo Balde’s dismissal.

Martin O’Neill’s team overcame the likes of Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, Stuttgart and Boavista on their way to the 2003 showdown with 80,000 Celtic supporters reported to be in the Spanish city.

Larsson admitted: “There were a lot of Celtic fans there. I had a lot of friends, including my father, coming to see the game.

“But it still hurts a little bit when I talk about it because I think it’s a game we should have won and the Celtic fans deserved that.

“But that’s the way it goes. Now there is a lot of water under the bridge, so we just have to get on with it.

“It was a very, very big game for Celtic because it was a long time since the club had been in a big final.

“And we had a great team that year. We managed to go all the way, almost – bar winning the final.

“It was just good to put Celtic back on the map again because it had been a long time since they had any success in Europe.

“We played Blackburn and Liverpool, and, yes, we were a little bit better than they were – and you always have the competition between Scotland and England, as well. So, that was important for Celtic and Scottish football at the time.

“I was just back from my injury. I had suffered a broken jaw and had been out of the game for six weeks.

“I managed to get back to play against Liverpool and I scored the opener. It was a lucky goal because I just tried to get my knee on it and it went in.

“It was 1-1 at Celtic Park. And then we won 2-0 away from home.”

  5. Gene- try cutting back onto M74 southbound from the Raith, take next cut off and go to EK through Hamilton takes about 15 mins.

I was so proud of the bhoys in seville – didn’t expect to win – so my disappointment was manageable unlike Milan in 70 – never have and never will get over it.

  7. It always strikes me that Mark McGhee is at his angriest when he is turned over by his former clubs (us and the dons).

He seemed ok when his club took two beatings in a week from the tribute act.

  8. My friends in Celtic,

Interesting reading about travel problems again. Parking and an integrated transport system have been discussed for Celtic Park, although we are still awaiting any concrete answers.

Things are changing so fast nowadays it must give planners a headache. The changes in Paradise itself have been mind blowing , especially pre 1999.

If and when a new hotel complex is delivered at Parkhead, should transportation be at the forefront of thinking. Should a helipad be considered, should a drone taxi rank be contemplated. Will pan galactic gargle blasters be the drink of choice ?

Futuristic maybe, but in 20 years highly probable. ( well maybe not the swally )

He knows where he can get away wi his histrionics.

If you’re going to cut down to the Raith anyway, following Bada’s suggestion, check if the inside lane is moving ok, as that will take you onto the Expressway.

At least, it did earlier this week. Things change day to day sometimes, with no prior warning. 20 minute journeys transformed into 2 hours at times.

  11. DD- some of his performances at post match pressers, are Warbiola like, desperate attempts to keep himself in a job.

I am listening to this as I type. It is beautifully presented by Clare Balding and her interlocutors. It is also heartbreaking. Please listen to it on Radio Four Iplayer.

We should utilise the Vatican tunnel in any future transport planning

    —————————

    Vatican Tunnel:-))))))))

You have a point there to ease our future travel problems.

I wonder if the relevant authorities have considered below the ground. I notice the London tube is introduced a new line ( The Elizabeth line )

Above and below the ground must be considered. Funding is a separate issue, but considering how much Celtic bring to our economy Planners would be negligent if they stood still.

( Would keep away from the Edinburgh Tram planners though)

I was thinking I’d stumbled into Mid-Morning Matters with Alan Partridge.

Pretty soon the posts will turn to duiscussing the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre….

  15. watchthemotors

It was very well presented, very informative and very evocative not least because of Clare’s walking companions.

What was particularly unsettling was the fact that we only know the names of a few of those who either died or survived in March 1849. I always thought they were from Louisburg, but of course they weren’t , many travelled there from a wide area in the hope of getting help there. The factors thought their time would be better spent at a Hunting Lodge, ie Delphi. We might not know all their names, but they are not forgotton.

  16. This season, so far, has been remarkable. Will we be able to repeat it next season? If we are only ten points ahead at this stage, will we be hearing that we are neck to neck with Aberdeen ( or Hearts) ?

As I’m the GF on the Raith Interchange it was a very satisfying experience seeing the first car driving through the Raith this morning (btw the first car through was actually on the 17 Jan and it was yours truly). The overall project covers M74/73 & M8, its probably the most complicated construction project I’ve been involved in over the last 35yrs. Once completed I have no doubt we will all appreciate the benefits.

The project has been a shot in the arm to a multitude of companies in the west of Scotland and no doubt once completed we will see a rise in unemployment as there are no major projects in the near future.
