Newco new start but big question remains

347

A bit surprised that Dave King’s gunboat diplomacy saw an agreement with Sports Direct, which will see the retailer’s interest in Newco end next year.

There is little prospect of Newco making much additional income from this over the next 12 months, as this period is where Sports Direct will receive all compensation for curtailing the period of the deal. But a year out, should they still be around, they will be able to negotiate improved terms, presumably with a different kit supplier.

You can ignore the grandiose bluster from some in the media, this will not in any meaningful way narrow the financial gap between Newco and Celtic, the more important question is why Mike Ashley chose to take an early exit. Maybe taking a limited dividend over the next 12 months is a better bet than hoping for a long-term return from a five-year-old business. Ashley’s people will have run various scenarios.

The important medium-term objective for Newco will be to reduce the dependency on shareholder loans to keep the lights on. They are not a millions miles away from this, and with a premium kit deal it should be possible from season 2018-19, but the central question you and I have pondered occasionally over the last five years remains:

Is a ‘Rangers’ football club commercially viable earning £50m less than Celtic and trailing hopelessly in their wake? I really hate the ‘know your place’ sentiment, but we’ll not have an answer to that question until self-awareness dawns, and there is a realisation that second placed cannon fodder is the best they can hope for.

Aberdeen have lost players (sorry about that) and are likely to be weaker next season. Hearts Cathro experiment looks unlikely to make any sort of challenge, so the Best of the Rest opportunity is wide open. Dream time, for those at Ibrox.

  1. Mike Ashley had a ton of surplus Hun Monkey bibs to shift.

Dave King has his back against the wall (anyone remember the city’s ‘financial cold shoulder’ in the works that the Scottish halfwit hacks have completely forgotten about?).

The Mike Ashley solution? – NO new home top until you’ve helped me shift the excess. Tell the Monkeys whatever you want, just get the stock moving. Once they’ve been gullibillied, we’ll throw in a new 2nd and 3rd kit, maximise revenue over the coming season and then we’ll sit down to renegotiate your deal (aye, right).

What else you going to do, Dave? Go be a Hun hero for a year. Go earn me some money.

  2. After all, who would’ve said after losing to Lincoln Red Imps that Celtic would not lose a domestic game all season?

Then who would’ve said after administration then Liquidation that they where still supporting the same team?

  4. My friends in Celtic,

For years now some of us have been predicting the imminent financial collapse of Sevco. We can still live in hope, but I can’t see it happening anytime soon.

According to the Facing Book, the Huns have sold out of replica merchandise. Does it really matter too much to sponsors if the kits are sold for next to zero profit. I may be wrong but their primary focus is to advertise the brand, and the more kits on show the better for them.

Forget the Huns but let’s not be too complacent and underestimate them. I’m totally confident that BR and his team will be well advanced in our plans for next year.

As today is the first full squad training day for the new season, I’d want any player entering the last twelve months of his current contract, without the club having the option to trigger a further period, to be told – “..sign a new deal before we board the plane to Austria or stay here. Congerton will find you a new club.”

Is there a new pitch being laid (the one muted earlier in season, similar to EPL types)?

I don’t have any doubt that the zombies (by hook or more likely crook) will really be competing with us soon enough.

There is no doubt there is complacency amongst the fans. Every move they make is met with with sneering contempt. I don’t think there is anything unusual in that, fans will always mock other teams. However that would only be a problem if there is complacency in the boardroom which I doubt, because I don’t think the management team would allow it.

it is not beyond the realms of possibility that a lot of their signings turn out to be good players, though it’s just as plausible that if it’s all going tits up by October the papers are awash with stories of Portuguese and Mexican cliques.

it is not beyond the realms of possibility that their DoF turns out to be an astute acquisition, though given a DoF’s remit is primarily player recruitment he’s a little bit late to the party.

i think King is expecting Europa League football, looking at the potential draws I think they will likely face a tougher route than we do for the CL, so if he’s gambling on it, it’s a mighty risk. They don’t have to be a great side to challenge for the title, consistently beating the rest would see the gap closed.

For us I’ve heard a lot of comments saying another treble and last 16 would be a great season. Well It would but that is not the bar I’m setting. Winning the league and qualifying for the CL group stages is a great season for me. Anything above that is a bonus.

  14. Gents,

If the photographs etc from the Celtic groups on the Facing Book are to be believed ( Which I don’t doubt ) then yes ; the new pitch is well underway and new LED panels are being installed to the screens.

When you converge at center ring with arguably the best boxer of all time with the best mixed martial artist of the generation, the box offices in Las Vegas sirens begin to sound and flash green.

With an extraordinary and unusual fight comes extraordinary ticket prices. Prices that would equate to two years salary for most Americans. According to Las Vegas Tickets the cheapest tickets available for Mayweather/McGregor will run around $2,013. As we inch closer to the floor the ticket prices soar. Ringside seats for the fight are ranging anywhere from $59,377 to the most expensive, a whopping $93,609.

There’s a reason this has been dubbed “The Billion Dollar Fight,” as Pay-Per View buys will surely exceed the 4.4 million record mark set by Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

  22. I think it is a dangerous thing to underestimate your enemy. No I’m not talking about the huns. I mean Aberdeen, Hearts, and not forgetting Neil Lennons Hibs. Yes Aberdeen have lost important players but they will be replaced probably with better. There is new investment up there.

Cathro will succeed or be sacked very soon. NL will forge Hibs into a tough team to beat. The Huns will be lucky to get a place next year, mid table.

I think we will win it next season, but not by as many points, and not undefeated. I’m looking forward to the challenge in Europe most of all. HH

off the fish & chips rappers sounds & reads like an all Bravado story to Me.

The bottom line here is Mike Ashley is cutting his losses in a speculate to get financially

shaffted project what a numpty no doubt Mr Ashley will be keeping his hard earned shekels

to invest into Newcastle United his beloved favourite Club.

As for shifting last Season’s manky tops off of his SD stockpile knowing the manky – monkeys

mindsets I don’t think they will be breaking down the doors in their thousands to buy up old

stock its a case for them of thanks but no thanks or maybe if the drop their prices for said

tops from £20 to 20 pence then perhaps they will shift a few tops but whatever way you look

@ said matter SD & Mike Ashley will take a financially kick in the nuts loss with this project

which will make other potential kit supplier sponsors a bit wary/ify taking a gamble & a chance

when King & Co come calling is it worth the risk mindset I can see future kit supplier sponsors
