Norway or Ireland again, or All-Ireland tie

175

If Celtic overcome Linfield, they will return to the north of Ireland or head to Norway in the next round.

Dundalk drew 1-1 with Rosenborg in the first leg in Ireland this week, so the Norwegians have a slender advantage, but the tie is by no means beyond the Irish. A return to Ireland in the next round would be a great reward for the many Celtic fans from that area who travel over to Scotland to see their team, but will be unable to attend tonight’s qualifier in Belfast.

Dundalk had a spectacular season in Europe last term, overcoming Champions League perennials BATE Borisov, before Legia Warsaw eliminated them from the premier tournament, opening up the opportunity for what proved to be a special season in the Europa League group stage.

Last season Rosenborg were eliminated from the Champions League third qualifying round by APOEL Nicosia.

From a travel perspective either destination is a good one for Celtic, although Brendan Rodgers would prefer to have the second tie at home.

Of course, fans of Linfield and Dundalk will be salivating at the prospect of an All-Ireland Champions League encounter.

McGregor v Mayweather-won’t it be great when we evolve into a species that doesn’t see two men being violent against each other as entertainment.

    ——————————-

In the future we will just imagine it inside the Oculus Rift…

Thats the nature of human competition , is it not?

Sport is entertainment, and id say that there are a lot worse things happening in the world than Mayweather v McGregor.

    Linfield 22-1 to win…

Tactics are basically hope to win kick off..quickly form a huddle/scrum around the ball..walk it in to Celtic Goal . From resulting kick off form a human sheild in their own goal..involving a fair bit of acrobatic formation. Hold out for remainder of game.

    It’s their only hope.

    I was joking.

But, bear in mind the atmosphere you will witness this afternoon.

The racism and bigotry is palpable.

I dont think that a showbiz fight, is as serious or cynical as Linfield, do you?

    Lets get real.

There is showbiz violence, and then there is real violence.

There are not the same thing.

  8. All the recent talk on here about the 11th, 12th and 14th July reminds me of something I read years ago written by Brendan Behan.

In his early days, he worked with Irish Lights and went round the island painting lighthouses. On one occasion, he was sent to the Six Counties to paint one of the lighthouses on the coast. On the 11th July, the men he was working with informed Brendan that they would not be at work the next day as they were going to the parade and the field demonstration. They suggested that Behan should come along with them, but he resisted at first. Eventually they told him there would be plenty of free beer, so as Brendan could not resist a good feed of drink, he went out to the field with them.

Out at the field, he went up to the front of the podium, smiled at the old fellow rhyming of screeds of bitterness and at the same time Brendan was cursing him under his breathe. After all this, Brendan went on to describe the oceans of beer consumed by all.

Leaving the so called festivities, he and the others were in no fit state to work the next day. On the morning of the 14th Brendan went round to all his co-workers abodes and wakened them up. Most were still in a bad state and did not want to come out of bed until Brendan told them that the 14th July was one the biggest Republican feasts. So it was a case of, well you came out to the field with us on the 12th, therefore we should celebrate this Republican feast with you.

Of course, Brendan never let on that he was celebrating the storming of the Bastille on 14th July. He left them in their total ignorance of what went on in the rest of the world.

Incidentally, one of the first me across the bridge at the Bastille was an Irishman called John Kavanagh.

Be careful all you ghirls and bhoys at the match and on your way home. I am sure you will leave the park to celebrate more than today’s republican feast.

    Moussa or Griff

Up top is the only decision to be made. I would go with Griffiths, he had the jersey at the end of last season and he’s in front of Moussa fitness wise. Also with Linfield likely to defend deep and in numbers that will suit Leigh more than it will Moussa. Moussa is much better when there is space to run into.

  20. THETIMREAPER

I agree that Griff is better against deep defences. I think Moussa to come on when this week’s booze is catching up on the Linfield players will be just lovely…
