Partick Thistle game doesn’t register

474

While captain Scott Brown will return to first team action this week, with the league encounter with Aberdeen out of the way, Brendan Rodgers will almost certainly continue to rest players ahead of the teams next meeting in the Scottish Cup Final.

Getting it right for Hampden is only one aspect the manager will be concerned about. Celtic’s first Champions League qualification round starts eight weeks tomorrow, between now and then the entire squad has to get their annual rest period and a significant portion of preseason. Several will also be on international duty four weeks from now.

While you and I want to see out the league programme undefeated, it is more important players are rested for the various cup finals which take place between now and the end of August. The Partick Thistle game on Thursday doesn’t register on what is important.

Celtic FC Foundation

Six days from now, while you are watching Celtic skelp Hearts, I’ll be running my first marathon, in aid of the Celtic Foundation.  I’m now in mild panic about what lies ahead, but on this Anniversary month, it’s important that we pay more than lip service to what being a Celtic supporter is all about.

If you are able to, please support the Foundation here.  If you are unable to, perhaps you know the Hail Mary…….

Thank you for the unbelievable support I’ve received so far.  There will be a time on Sunday when it will fuel the legs.

    Reggie,

    You are aware that this is a Celtic themed blog ?

    If an opposing player tries to get one of ours sent off, are we just aupposed to sit down and say “ah well, our players do it too, so we should excuse him”.

    When the general consensus of opinion amongst Celtic fans think Logan is “a wee prick”, and then you post and try to justify his behaviour, what sort of reaction did you expect ?

    No need for the response that Ernie Lynch got from you. You have an opinion, you come on here and express that, others will respond, and a discussion ensues. Usually good-natured. There’s no need to be so confrontational.

    I agree with you. But only about BT turning down the crowd singing. It definitely happened and isn’t the first time, although it’s been more noticeable on Sky before now.

    I don’t like Logan, and it goes further back than the Tonev incident. He’s an average player who believes he’s better than he is, and all this publicity and having people mention his name will just inflate his already puffed up ego.

    =============

    I’m fully understand the bias all clubs fans have, but that doesn’t mean I should just nod my head and accept it. If I see something that I think is unjust then I think it should be challenged. I try and be objective about everything. I try and think what say if the roles were reversed. The huns said our players were inciting the orcs at ibrox. Now people are saying Logan was inciting the crowd at Pittodrie. Fans give it out but if a player so much as looks at them they spit the dummy out. If Broony had been noising up their fans, as he is want to do from time to time, I wouldn’t have blinked an eye lid. In fact I quite him enjoy him doing so. So I’m not going to turn round and criticise an opposition player for doing the same.

    As for Ernie, he doesn’t treat other posters with respect so I don’t think he deserves any. If you think he was anything other than facetious in his response to me then I suggest you read his posts again.

    Finally thank you for for acknowledging BT the turning down of the crowd singing. With the abuse coming my way, it takes a bit of courage to stick your head above the parapet. I don’t enjoy sitting here arguing with my own fans. I’d much rather be talking about how we are going to replace Roberts, who in the squad is likely to be moved on if Rodgers gets it down to the 16 or 17 he says is ideal, another unpopular suggestion but Henderson probably needs to move on for his own good, at least on loan. But if I’m going to read this site then I need to challenge things I see as unacceptable, things I feel hurt the club and it’s reputation. If people want to take shots at me for doing so then so be it.

  6. Reggie,

    What Logan did, and what he hoped to achieve, is different to other players ‘winding up’ opposing fans. Given the high profile of fans racially abusing players rcently, i have no doubt that he was inviting racist behaviour from the Celtic fans. His behaviour – just my opinion – is as racist as the response he was trying to provoke.

    I’d much rather talk about the fact that he didn’t get the response from our fans, and their behaviour in the face of such provocation was excellent ( not saying that there weren’t some sweary words shouted at him, but, like it or not, ‘bad language’ is commonplace at football matches. I’m not shocked by it, but if i had young children with me, I’d prefer them not to be subjected to it at an early age, but, it is what it is. )

    And for what it’s worth, i support your right to have your say, whether i agree with your opinion or not.

    Ernie is Ernie. I’ve had no discussion with him and he can sometimes have an abrasive nature to his posts, but he has the right to express things in his own way, as long as it’s not offensive. Sometimes i don’t like the condescending way has has of replying, but……some people are totally different on blogs and forums…..15 plus years of reading and posting on fitba’ blogs/forums has taught me to take much of what i read with a large pinch of salt. Away from here people might be the polar opposite of their online image, so don’t take it so personally. ;-)

    You say that ” instincts tell you that Logan was telling the truth” ?

    =====

    I’m not saying that. I think that implies that I definitively think he was telling the truth. I have no knowledge either way. I would phrase it as my instincts make me lean towards believing him but I don’t say that with certainty. If you’re point is that instincts can be wrong, then I absolutely agree and accept it. Again my point is I don’t think he should be abused for making an accusation. For clarity, if other fans were abusing Tonev on the basis of an unproven allegation then I would find that equally distasteful.

  15. Logan was at it for most of the second half trying top provoke a response from the Celtic supporters – most of this was missed by the BT cameras.

    Pretty cool that the support did not respond to him.

    In the first half there was a wee boy standing on a seat who would go into his pocket, take out a coin and throw it at anyone passing by at the sidelines, for instance a group of ball boys at the start and various Police officers.

    Niall McGinn eventually picked up a coin on the pitch and gave it to the assistant referee.

    Pretty uncool.

    BT did turn the sound down BTW. It was absolutely bonkers up there, bodies were flying everywhere in the celebrations in the first 11 minutes, as crazy as I can remember and the signing was loud. Very loud.

    The new batch of our Jock Stein t-shirts have arrived in the last half hour and will be posted out to everyone who has ordered in the morning. This is definitely the last batch we will have. You seem to be a reasonable guy, so I’m hoping I’ve picked you up wrong. But that seems to imply that if another Aberdeen player was winding up our fans then that would be ok, but because it was Logan then he is trying to invite racial abuse from our support? I can’t agree with that. I think that’s quite a leap from what were fairly innocuous actions.

    WC,

    Are you saying that it was ok for a wee guy to be standing on a seat, lobbing coins at anyone in range, but “uncool” for Mc.Ginn to hand one to the ref?

  21. Reggie,

    Not sure how you can get to the point you did from what i posted. I said that what Logan did was different to other players winding opposing fans up. I didn’t say, or infer, that it was okay for other Aberdeen players to wind up our fans. It happens. What logan did, was, in my opinion, an invitation for Celtic Fans to racially abuse him, given the history with Tonev, a quite deliberate act. It doesn’t take a quantum leap to believe he’s capable of that, and that was what he was hoping for, so that he could be a victim again. It was sustained provocation, culminating, for me in him standing on the touchline, in front of our fans, gesticulating with his hands in a “come on” type of movement. You find that innocuous ? Really ? You’ll probably try to say he was just asking for the ball back. That would be extremely naive.

    Can you point me in the direction of an instance of another player, not even a Celtic player, acting in this way. There is no doubt in my mind what he was trying to do. No doubt whatsoever.

    I said earlier that he was an odious individual. I stand by that.

  28. Did big Souey ever correct his recent misrepresentation of Jock Stein’s famous comment apropos signing RC/protestant players ? Saw him yesterday on Sky and the thought struck me how truly awful it would be if someone had the audacity to wilfully misrepresent that barnet of his i.e. by suggesting its a transplant ( Boydy, Rooney, Berbatov, Clattenburg et all) as opposed to a Smudger Smith style hair weave or even a Bruce Forsyth-type Irish jig !

    =====

    I wasn’t at the game so I can only comment on what I saw on tv, and I don’t really have a problem with the footage I saw. If that was one of our players, and he had been getting constant abuse, I would say well done, stand up to them.

    If he was telling the truth about Tonev, then from his point of view he has been racially abused by a fellow player, and subsequently abused(not racially) by that players supporters ever since, and no doubt goaded throughout the second half. In that situation I would probably do the same. I think we have seen that sort of reaction from our own players though out the years.

    Lennon was subjected to horrific abuse for years in this country. From his point of view(or from any civilised persons point of view) he did nothing to deserve it, but he was no shrinking violet, he would wind up oppositions fans. He wasn’t inviting sectarian abuse (though he certainly got it). He was standing up to those abusing him. I applaud him for it. Why should a player take that kind of abuse and do nothing? Therefore I’m not going be hypocritical and say Logan should just sit there and take abuse from Celtic fans just because they are Celtic fans. If they can’t take it back, don’t dish it out.

    Some people used to say Lennon was an odious character. Some people used to say he brought it on himself. This argument about Logan is straying dangerously close to the same narrative. It stank them and it stinks now.

    Anyway, I’m sure people are long since tired with me and the conversation in general. I make no apologies for it. Just standing up for what I think is right. Agree to disagree etc
