Rangers destroyed by SFA

503

Huge result from the SFA Judicial Panel Tribunal tonight, absolutely enormous, perhaps the biggest decision ever made in Scottish football history.  Rangers have been banned from signing players over 18-years-old, for a period of 12 months and fined £160k.

For months Scottish football has lived under some huge moral questions; would the combined forces of TV contracts, the Bank of Scotland and the formidable Rangers lobby combine to subvert the meritocratic spirit of sport and see rules written to see Rangers kept afloat.

The SFA Judicial Panel Tribunal made these questions moot.  In the event that Rangers fail to agree a CVA with creditors and emerge as a Newco, and IF that Newco is allowed to inherit the SPL share given up by Rangers, the Newco will be unable to sign any players of 18 years or older.

Although the SPL and SFA are able to transfer Rangers league share to a Newco, player employment contracts are with the current company, so players would not be contracted to any new company.  An SPL Newco would need to compete with 16 and 17-year-olds.

Conversely, there is nothing to stop a new football club, Rangers United, for example, sharing Firhill and applying to the Scottish Football League, from signing players of any age.  A new football club like this would inherit no financial or football punishment from Rangers FC.  Anyone aspiring to fill the gap left by Rangers would do well to navigate their plans in this direction.

In fact, scrub that first sentence, this is the biggest decision ever made in Scottish football history, no perhaps about it.

Insolvency terminates contracts of employment. TUPE doesn’t apply.

In any case the players will be out of there as soon as they possibly can.

    They’re screwed.

  2. This will go down as the day that Scottish football finally grew a pair. The day that the powers that be stood up to the club that for so long has been able to do what it wants.

I don’t have the list of who sat on that panel to hand but I’d like to buy each of them a drink for the service they have done today.

Strange time to make the announcement – but who cares.

Yes, the seeds were sewn on May 25, 1967. As I jumped about the living room that night, I’d never have thought the effects would last 45 years…and more.

I’m sure what you are saying is 100% what should happen but do you truly believe it will? For example where does it say the punishment will apply to a Newco?

Could it be that SFA are in the know and the punishment won’t matter as they will be dead soon anyway.

That way they can appear to be playing hardball i.e no accusations of bias.

    Just saying like.

  6. Time for bed though it’ll probably take quite a bit of reading to quieten the mind and get to sleep.

Looking forward to a long post tomorrow from one of the learned posters on what this judgement really means and where the punishment actually sits in the scale of what could/should have been brought to bear. Seeing that post about Celtic being fined £100 all those years ago makes the level of fine seem somewhat diminished. Unfortunately I have no context, and don’t understand the rules well enough, to understand whether this is minimal, median or maximum grade punishment.

And Hamiltontim, see what happens when you do the nightshift and have to cope with a hangover, 4 hours sleep and an away game – you miss all the big news ;)

  7. Got a feeling they might liquidate after we (hopefully) gub them royally next week.

Although also have a feeling the entire songbook of that lot will be aired and the away section will be trashed!!!

Anyone who is going next week be on your guard!

Never did expect a penalty so strong, incredible & this is just the start in terms of punishments.

EBT’s still to come. Oh Dear! It’s over for them surely, 3rd division must now be favourite. :))))

As of 10:00 pm the bids that were on the table have been taken off the table and, as of today, the deadline has been moved to tomorrow. The table will be sold to pay for our tea and a ‘newtable’ will be assembled from some discarded pallets we found outside. The ‘newtable’ is, in essence, the same as the table but without the shoogly leg. We are in close discussion with Bill Miller & The Blue Knights, we are prepared to offer exclusivity to whoever manages to get us tae eff outta here!!

Craig Whyte, a man who is as welcome as an Obi Wan Kenobi in a paddling pool, has been banned for life from the table.

We have been banned for 12 months from signing players.

Apart from that, it’s business as usual!

  10. Brilliant stuff – the end is very very near

Kojo – I noted your comments earlier about saying that anyone who criticised our own board should be ashamed. I’m afraid not – this is not a mutually exclusive in terms of spending like the huns or having no ambition – but an argument for a later date – everthing else is just too funny!!!!

  11. Highly suspicious that the SFA announcement has been timed perfectly to give the Oz Tims a lovely morning boost.

    Hmmm, and didn’t that Celtic tour there last year . . . . I smell a rat.

    S

And they get all the nice weather.

  12. We should enjoy this moment while it lasts, bhoys and ghirls, ’cause once this reaches the referee’s commitee it will be overturned and Lenny will get a 17 match ban.

  13. …and there was me wondering why the Celtic board were not more vocal recently!

I think they have played a blinder in this debacle. As has been said before – don’t interrupt your enemy when they are making a mistake!

  14. I wish posters would stop saying its Div 3 for THEM.

There will be NO THEM, they will have ceased to exist por cierto…!!!

The bully boy tactics were doomed to fail, only Peter Lawwell can do that in Scottish football.

    Only kidding Peter, honest :-)

sonofaderryman, Fraser Wishart has already been on the case on this matter, insisting players will be free agents. We’ll see soon enough….

    SwanseaBhoy, no sleep for you!

praecepta, illegal registration of players issue is far bigger than this one. Can’t imagine where to go with that punishment.

    tomthelennytim, doom time.

    Ceaser67, you’ve been shared.

ernie lynch, happy to read that.

mic1888, punishment applies to Newco IF Newco is allowed to inherit Rangers SPL share.

  19. I really am beginning to wonder about the conversation with our lawyer and the sfa at Hamden last week!!!!!!!

  21. Malone19 – if they want the registration of OldCo, which gives them their coveted history, they have to take the ban.

So NewCo with history = no signings for 12 months

NewCo bottom of Div 3, no history but can sign players.

I believe that is called a rock and a hard place

It’s like that American fraudster godster back in the nineties who resorted to murder. He got convicted and was sentenced to 500 years in prison and a Million dollar fine with no chance of parole for the first 100 years. Well. He better pay that fine or he’s gonna be in a lot of trouble.

SunSport can reveal a bitter bust-up with Rangers boss Ally McCoist saw the crocked striker suspended last night.

Lafferty has been ordered to stay away from Murray Park and Ibrox for two weeks, and banned from attending the final two home games of the season against Dundee United and Motherwell.

It’s believed the £3.25million hitman, who has a year left on his contract, never wants to play for McCoist again.

The explosive fall-out follows the 24-year-old star’s failure to meet up with the squad last Friday for the trip to Edinburgh and an overnight stay ahead of the 3-0 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.

Livid McCoist summoned Lafferty — who’s currently sidelined by a hernia problem needing surgery — to his office and bluntly ordered him to keep away from Ibrox.

Yet, a source close to the player last night claimed the Gers boss had asked Lafferty to make himself available for action as a sub against the Jambos despite him being clearly unfit.

Lafferty, who played a major role in the last two Rangers’ title triumphs with vital goals, was not willing to take that risk.

The Ulsterman has already made three sub appearances while not 100 per cent fit.

The same source also alleged that McCoist had CANCELLED two planned operations for the Northern Ireland ace, including one pencilled in for Manchester today.

It’s believed Lafferty was scheduled to head south last night to the same private hospital as Gers captain Steven Davis, who WILL get surgery for a similar injury which has ended his season.

Instead, Lafferty has been forced to remain at home and ponder his future.

The ex-Burnley frontman last month joined other top stars, including Allan McGregor, skipper Davis and Steven Naismith, in agreeing a desperate request from Rangers’ administrators to take a 75 per cent wage cut.

SunSport revealed this month that Lafferty, signed in June 2008, had also insisted that in return for slashing his wages he would be available for a potential summer transfer at a cut-price £500,000.

His career at Rangers has been littered with controversy, but he had become a key player under ex-boss Walter Smith and then McCoist.

But now it seems certain he has played his last game for Gers and will get that move away from his boyhood heroes.
