International players will begin returning to Bayern Munich’s training facility today. Many will undergo their first session under new manager Jupp Heynckes. Five points off the pace domestically, they face Freiburg on Saturday before the visit of Celtic one week today.
Freiburg are above the relegation play-off spot on goal difference only, largely as a consequence of settling in for a draw. They have lost only two of their seven games. On Saturday, Celtic scouts will likely learn how Bayern play against a packed defence.
If the result in Brussels afforded Brendan Rodgers some Champions League freedom, Heynckes is under pressure to win both games this coming week. This is far from impossible (they are Bayern Munich, after all), but the new manager will be working blind, having little or no time on the training field with his players, talented though they are.
I’m feeling unusually chilled about the game in Munich. We will rest those who need it on Saturday, then travel with the rare ‘nothing to lose’ phenomenon, so scarce for Celtic teams. The contrast for the Germans could not be greater; a loss to Celtic would be cataclysmic. We should enjoy this.

Not sure Heynckes is under much pressure. He’s only a caretaker till the end of the season.
Additionally,he knows a lot of the players,having managed them pre-Pep.
Having said that,he’ll be desperate for a winning start to his reapppointment. Settle the ship,get the victories flowing,prior to their winter break. Then he can get them motoring.
I’m sure he’ll find that a lot easier in the later stages of the EL than the CL!!!

Not sure I’d completely agree with that, Paul. Many of the Bayern players will have played under Heynckes and there’s no way they would have appointed him if he wasn’t popular with the players.
They played some really good football under him and steamrolled quite a few teams. Very tough game ahead.

To be fair,I’ve watched Celtic long enough to have seen worse. IMO,I didn’t see a top man in goal between Ally Hunter and Artur Boruc.

Scottish Football is in a deep predicament, outwith Celtic it is being completely overwhelmed by European Football in the 21st Century.
Now without going into the obvious, wheres and whyfors of this situation, it has not been helped by the Scottish Sports Press. The Scottish Reporters, like the Scottish Football Administrators seem to more preoccupied with self-interest, cronyism, their expensed jollies rather than doing their jobs.
Understanding the technical, commercial and governance issues underlying current and future challeges of the game in Europe and analysing this with regard to the Scottish game and the implications arising at Club and National level are obviously way beyond them.
Sad, but this is a million miles away from the Journalism that gave the world Huge McIlvanney.
At one time I used to read the Guardian, would buy it every day for many reasons. One of the reasons was because living in England in the early eighties Scottish Football news was difficult to come by, but every Monday the Guardian ran a section that covered Scottish Football, specifically the previous weekends. It was a professional, insightful and for me an essential part of the Sports section.
It’s been a while since I regularly bought a Newspaper but always held the Guardian in high regard.
I was hugely disappointed then, when earlier this year their Scottish Football correspondents piece on marking the great accomplishment of Celtic making the European Champions League was a despairing piece about how bad this was for Scottish Football.
Indeed, it felt worse when I read the piece, there wasn’t a salient point to back up his notion. It was an embittered piece because the main benefit would go towards Celtic.
I said at the time the piece was bigoted, it was the only reason that this narrow-minded anti-Celtic piece made any sense.
Today there was hearsay re: Scott Brown’s future with the Scotland National Squad printed in the Daily Record – quelle Surprise, you may say.
Well true – but the thing is the Guardian’s Scottish Football Correspondent picked up on it, treated it as fact and worse tweeted on it, it was very derogatory to our Captain…
