Rare nothing to lose phenomenon, the Great Hunger

185

International players will begin returning to Bayern Munich’s training facility today. Many will undergo their first session under new manager Jupp Heynckes. Five points off the pace domestically, they face Freiburg on Saturday before the visit of Celtic one week today.

Freiburg are above the relegation play-off spot on goal difference only, largely as a consequence of settling in for a draw. They have lost only two of their seven games. On Saturday, Celtic scouts will likely learn how Bayern play against a packed defence.

If the result in Brussels afforded Brendan Rodgers some Champions League freedom, Heynckes is under pressure to win both games this coming week. This is far from impossible (they are Bayern Munich, after all), but the new manager will be working blind, having little or no time on the training field with his players, talented though they are.

I’m feeling unusually chilled about the game in Munich. We will rest those who need it on Saturday, then travel with the rare ‘nothing to lose’ phenomenon, so scarce for Celtic teams. The contrast for the Germans could not be greater; a loss to Celtic would be cataclysmic. We should enjoy this.capture-20171009-120341

National Famine Day Memorial match-worn shirt

Many thanks to all who entered the raffle for James Forrest’s match-worn shirt, commemorating the Great Hunger, which followed the Blight which passed through much of Europe in the 1840s before hitting Ireland. A million died there, millions more emigrated, some to Scotland. A few of these new communities here setup football teams in Edinburgh, Dundee and then Glasgow.

Is this an important part of the Celtic story? I think so. Its consequences inform our values today.

You can enter the raffle by making a minimum £5 donation to Celtic FC Foundation here. The money will continue the great work carried out in your name. And you might win a signed, match-worn, Famine Memorial shirt.

What a great thing to do.

To enter, send your donation confirmation email to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the PSG player who was booked for diving against Celtic last month in the SUBJECT line.

Thanks.

My über-Tim mate from Bicester, via Swindon and Chapelhall is proud as punch that his partner’s daughter is off to Kenya in the summer to help build a school in the middle of nowhere.

    From scratch.

“In 2019, I have the honour of travelling to Kenya to help build a school for the local children. Whilst there I will be: building the school, clearing waterholes and much more. However, to be able to complete such amazing volunteer work, I have to raise £4000, in total. To do this, I will be doing a range of sponsorship activities as well as this.

I hope that you will help me on my journey to Kenya, so I can help people less fortunate than me.”

  3. Never a great thing to be playing a team with new management, the players are all out to impress. 0-0 would have me a happy bhoy.

Not sure Heynckes is under much pressure. He’s only a caretaker till the end of the season.

Additionally,he knows a lot of the players, having managed them pre-Pep.

Having said that,he’ll be desperate for a winning start to his reapppointment. Settle the ship, get the victories flowing, prior to their winter break. Then he can get them motoring.

I’m sure he’ll find that a lot easier in the later stages of the EL than the CL!!!

  5. Congratulations to all of the “Jobo ” family.

  7. Looking forward to this game .

    I was last there in 2003 ..

Celtic 1 up – Bobo Balde missed a sitter to make it 2 / a dreadful clearance from Varga gifted them the equaliser and then some Dearie Me goalkeeping from Marcus Headman gave them the winner . One of those European away nights.

Whatever,a real disappointment. Which led to Rab Douglas, btw.

He did the same in the away game at Lyon, 3.2 to Lyon ,I was slightly to the right of the goal, he refused to move his feet at a free kick and it went passed him beating his stretch,a poor keeper he was.

    Rab Douglas ?

I’m really ambivalent . . Sometimes excellent — fond memories of a great performance away to Valencia , sometimes dreadful — Arta’s goal for the Deady Bears comes to mind

  13. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Not sure I’d completely agree with that, Paul. Many of the Bayern players will have played under Heynckes and there’s no way they would have appointed him if he wasn’t popular with the players.

They played some really good football under him and steamrolled quite a few teams. Very tough game ahead.

    Aye. Ultimately costly.

As were the two blunders in the 3-3 draw wi them in 02/03.

To be fair,I’ve watched Celtic long enough to have seen worse. IMO,I didn’t see a top man in goal between Ally Hunter and Artur Boruc.

Whenever the oppo attacked in those days,I’d casually roll a smoke. Save me having to watch!

When we go into Europe with a nothing to lose attitude we normally lose. Thankfully I’m sure Brendan won’t see it like that and we will go there fired up with every intention of getting a decent result.

  25. Warbiola ‘ the huns fanbase has been reared on European success…..’ , The Lying King could use that in the tribunal, he’s barking mad….

  26. Rock Tree Bhoy on

No wonder the players in the Scotland squad want WGS to stay on as manager, a new one would boot most of them out, apart from our lot I hadn’t heard of most of them until there names appeared in the squad list.

  27. Scottish Football is in a deep predicament, outwith Celtic it is being completely overwhelmed by European Football in the 21st Century.

Now without going into the obvious, wheres and whyfors of this situation, it has not been helped by the Scottish Sports Press. The Scottish Reporters, like the Scottish Football Administrators seem to more preoccupied with self-interest, cronyism, their expensed jollies rather than doing their jobs.

Understanding the technical, commercial and governance issues underlying current and future challeges of the game in Europe and analysing this with regard to the Scottish game and the implications arising at Club and National level are obviously way beyond them.

Sad, but this is a million miles away from the Journalism that gave the world Huge McIlvanney.

At one time I used to read the Guardian, would buy it every day for many reasons. One of the reasons was because living in England in the early eighties Scottish Football news was difficult to come by, but every Monday the Guardian ran a section that covered Scottish Football, specifically the previous weekends. It was a professional, insightful and for me an essential part of the Sports section.

It’s been a while since I regularly bought a Newspaper but always held the Guardian in high regard.

I was hugely disappointed then, when earlier this year their Scottish Football correspondents piece on marking the great accomplishment of Celtic making the European Champions League was a despairing piece about how bad this was for Scottish Football.

Indeed, it felt worse when I read the piece, there wasn’t a salient point to back up his notion. It was an embittered piece because the main benefit would go towards Celtic.

I said at the time the piece was bigoted, it was the only reason that this narrow-minded anti-Celtic piece made any sense.

Today there was hearsay re: Scott Brown’s future with the Scotland National Squad printed in the Daily Record – quelle Surprise, you may say.

Well true – but the thing is the Guardian’s Scottish Football Correspondent picked up on it, treated it as fact and worse tweeted on it, it was very derogatory to our Captain…

Scott Brown, not content with picking and choosing international games, now wants to pick and choose international managers. Brilliant. – Ewan Murray (@mrewanmurray)

On this occasion I was not hugely disappointed by either the content or sarcasm because now I know what Ewan Murray is…

Why do the Guardian Employ him?

    Hail Hail
