Reacting to adversity

1334

I like Scott Brown and Leigh Griffiths’ reactions to our recent adversity.  It says a lot about them.  They both personalise responsibility for what happens next, this is an important part of recovery – and success.

A week ago I wrote that the League Cup semi against Ross County was the biggest game in the rest of our season, and that it wasn’t a game I’d bet on.  It provided the toxicity cup football can generate, creating a crisis mentality which rolled into Aberdeen on Wednesday.

This psychological phenomenon has to end now.  Feel free to put a date in June in the diary to get back to it.  We are in a genuine league title contest, something you and I talked about as a great thing for Scottish football not so long ago.  We have no God given right to be miles ahead of anyone.  We are here because we’ve made mistakes and an opponent stepped up.  Welcome to Celtic.

If you want to open an inquest when the patient catches a cold, knock yourself out, but I’m not up for it.  If we want this title, we circle the wagons and give the manager and players the encouragement they need to get the job done (and, erm, that includes you, ‘Phyllis’).  You can be sure Aberdeen fans will do nothing less.

Tomorrow the focus switches to Perth, where Aberdeen take on St Johnstone.  They won their first 8 league games this season, but the wheels came off the tractor immediately after their most important victory away from home – at Tynecastle.  Next up was a League Cup game against Hibs, the loss of which plunged them into a five-week chasm.

They are a team who get notoriously nervous just when they begin to think they are in with a chance.  We’ll see what Tommy Wright does with them tomorrow.

Enjoy your football.  Enjoy this league race, the challenge and the disappointments.  Enjoy that thrill when a goal goes against Aberdeen, or the downer when they score.  It will make the finale all the more rewarding, I promise you.

  1. Well done, John Savage on Mastermind, great 17 points on general knowledge to scoosh it.

Marrakesh Express , well stated. Ridiculous questions on a prestigious quiz show.

    Wonder why ?

Bream Kayal playing well for Brighton. 2 up, fingers crossed they keep a 2 goal lead. Will pay train fare to Airdrie on Sunday.

I too will donate £100 if I eventually do win…I will let CRC decide which charity will benefit…as long as it is not himself…:)

Why did choose the Team this week, because it is being played at a dead Club’s Ground and elbows and other ex-old Club Employees from that Club are involved. Oh and I forgot their twelfth man!

It has cost me £20 for LMS6, I have done my bit, Wee Shay has won LMS6. If I manage to survive another week, it’s a bonus.

Good luck to Doc and the other eight last men standing.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

I sincerely hope not, very average track record, with an attitude to Celtic ( on air ) akin to Andy Walker.

    Get lost, enjoy Norn Iron.

You keep posting and spreading the Celtic word the other end of the world, I never get too up or too down over the result it doesn’t change the love of the hoops

There is training and over training, some players only need so much and others can go all day without effect.

Maybe JC is pushing some over their limit! He showed of his six pack to the hibs players and demanded the same.

Back in the the day, one of lions would have knocked him out.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing…… Stand by your convictions

Good points, well made and well balanced – makes such a change from the Peter Pan Brigade (Bhoys who never grew up) whose bile leads them to blame all negatives on Peter Lawwells salary.

Where I disagree is about Ronny’s tenure – I have been at every home game at Celtic Park since he was appointed, and three a Paisley, for my sins.

I see no sustained progress whatsoever in tactics, performance, team selection, or transfer dealings.

Ronny’s demeanour and erudicity has deteriorated markedly over the past six months, as the pressure builds.

Everyone in our company on matchdays genuinely wanted Ronny to succeed, even after yet another European fiasco – we all thought it harsh to consider ditching a manager who had a chance of winning all domestic trophies. However the mood has changed dramatically over the past week, with the majority of us now in favour of change before the position deteriorates further.

The direction of travel is downwards – we must do something – doing nothing and hoping for the best is NOT an option.

The young kids are Celtics future and it still amazes me they are

so fanatic when they have never even been to Celtic park, that is

their holy grail and the question is always ” when do you think we

will go there ” so they have been promised very soon and i will

    never break a promise.

  16. I know little about fitba’ so , on the evidence presented recently, I’m well qualified to comment………

How many great fitba’ players become great fitba’ managers?

Why would we think someones track record as an excellent player and athlete would naturally translate to the off-field responsibilities of man and team management?

A supplementary question – In evaluating the position of managerial candidate for Celtic, how much weight do you give to how malign and toxic the environment is for any prospective candidate?

  17. Celtic?

    Lightweight?

Aye in the football management department.

We have a young, ambitious but somewhat naive manager – wet around the ears if you like but nothing some guidance wouldn’t solve.

If RD looks above him at the club there is nobody. Just accountants, whisky retailers and the like. Men who know no more than you or me or anyone else on here.

Yet with all the football Celtic have played. Our highs and lows. Lessons learnt. The joys of winning and how we did that.

Why isn’t there a football man, a Celtic football man there to assist a young, ambitious manager?

Who missed that from the strategy and why?

Because all it has achieved is Malmo, Legia and the like and giving away the Forster and VVD money through unforgivable flops.

    Some strategy.

100% behind RONNY if he had a helping hand.
