RODGERS BACKS McGREGOR FOR SCOTS CALL-UP

BRENDAN RODGERS has admitted he expects Callum McGregor to get a World Cup call-up by Gordon Strachan.

The Scotland boss will name his squad next week for the forthcoming clashes in Lithuania and Malta at Hampden.

And the Celtic gaffer believes his midfielder is in line to join his team-mates Craig Gordon, Kieran Tierney, Scott Brown, Stuart Armstrong, James Forrest and Leigh Griffiths on the international front.

Rodgers watched McGregor, so far overlooked by Strachan, score the killer second goal in the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park at the weekend.

Asked if he expected the 24-year-old playmaker, who has never been capped at full level, to get the nod from the Scots supremo, the Parkhead chief said: “International managers look for other characteristics and qualities in players.

“For me, though, there is absolutely no doubt he can come into the squad.

“Callum has an incredible knack of keeping the ball and also scoring goals.

“His simplicity of the game is there to see.

“He can play in a number of positions, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in it because he’s a top class young player.”

Scotland face Lithuania on Friday, September 1, and Malta three days later.
