Season of the daunting tasks continues

308

Manchester City have flattered to deceive in the Champions League since becoming one of the richest clubs in the world, before reaching the semi-finals of the competition last season. That contest ended in a 1-0 aggregate win for Real Madrid, closer than many expected, based on City’s domestic form at the time.

What happened at City last season is the stuff books are written about, well after the event. They took the early season by storm, but when it became clear manager Manuel Pellegrini was to be replaced by Pep Guardiola in the summer, results fell apart. Even their highly-credible results against Real Madrid were criticised for a perceived lack of effort in places.

Now Guardiola is in charge and City are short odds on to take the title. The look imperious in English football, while their 4-0 trouncing of Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League earlier this month was remarkably comprehensive.

Celtic have managed to draw a Champions League group stage with two of the four top favourites to win the tournament. Barcelona are favourites with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid behind, but City are ahead of recent finalists Juventus and Atletico Madrid. The other UK clubs barely rate a mention.

This luck of the draw is far from a normal event. It appears harsh on pot three team, Borussia, and absolutely daunting for pot 4’s Celtic. The humbling in Barcelona two weeks ago served Brendan and the players with a lesson, perhaps not their last this campaign, but tomorrow gives us a chance to face off against one of the best teams in the world. It will be exhausting and exhilarating, but we should face it with some anticipation.

You are going to see Celtic score four, five and six against many teams this season. We are so far ahead of the rest of Scotland this is the norm. These Champions League games are the bonus which will illuminate the dark evenings, but they will also provide a valuable yardstick to measure the scintillating football we watched at the weekend.

Are Kieran and Tom ready to face the best in the business? Do Scott Sinclair and James Forrest have a point to prove? Can Leigh and/or Moussa use their pace to create space against top international defenders?

By 21:45 tomorrow evening you’ll know some of these answers.  Give me this kind of stress any day, instead of Molde or Fenerbahce.

Thanks for all the support for the Great Scottish Run for the Celtic Foundation on Saturday. Special thanks for those who got the MyDonate account up to this level (below) yesterday. And a bigger thanks to the person who moved us on!

  7. Did Lee Wallace ” Grass Up” Alladyce ?

FA new managerial team, Wobbly Warbo as manager, Barton as his assistant ?

Wouldn’t be great to have ALL those expert English pundits who for years have been telling the English nation where their national team have been going wrong, why don’t these football experts put their names forward ?

I speak of numpties like Lee Dixon, Ian Wright, Harry Rednap, Jamie Rednap, Jamie Carrzgher, Steve McManamam, Souness, Lawrenson, etc, etc after all these people and many others seem to have all the answers ?

IMO, given that the English football establishment are now in a real state of embarrassment especially when members of the English FA and their league managers were so critical of UEFA and FIFA’s corruption etc, they have seriously failed to ensure that their own Association is free from wrongdoing.

I strongly suspect that Alladyce may prove to be only the “tip of the iceberg” ?

Again IMO, if the FA were to turn to that moron Glen Hoddle as their new manager, they would really be the laughing stock of the football p!anet, if they aren’t already ? IMO, it’s a absolute disgrace that Hoddle has been allowed back on our screens given his beliefs ?

I seriously believe that Alladyce will have to emigrate given the public and media pressure that surely won’t let up ?

Don’t be surprised if that same English media were to offer him a deal to name names of others within the English league who have been at it for years also ? That way Alladyce would be in a position to say, ” look I’m not the only one” ?

  8. Nye Bevans' rebel soldier on

    Good Morning Timland.

  9. Sky have asked Brendan on his thoughts on ” Samgate” ?

I must admit to being rather surprised that Brendan chose to comment on it, and at the same time question the ” methods” used to share Alladyce ?

I suppose that on the one hand Brendan is implying how low the media will stoop and took the opportunity to transmit that to an interviewer from the media, however IMO I wish he had just said ” no comment” or ” nothing to do with me, I’m Irish” ?

  10. Well I for one am looking forward going to tonight’s game, and as the norm for me looking for a result, I don’t do predictions or pick the Celtic team for tonight’s game it’s a squads game and many diff places can be held by diff players I leave that up to the manager, I also don’t have a problem with people who think should be playing, but! Most times when they are strong on the opinion on who THEY think should start, the player/ players who get the nod for the start are not the ones they fancy, they get it in the neck for every mistake they make, doesent matter how they play they’re on to a hiding, I’ve heard it many, many, times, it’s kinda along the modern day times of coupons when someone has picked Celtic to win 3-0 4-0 5-0, and like Saturday we lost a goal? The amount of people I’ve heard saying ,…that goal f,.,.,d ma coupon….seriously? We won 6-1 ffs :))

But with an open heart I honestly think we’ll get a result tonight, positivity was always my strongest suit, anyway, let the game start and we take it as it comes, get right into them Celtic.

Watch the spineless smsm all get the tuppence worth in about Samgate. Theyll no doubt be reading the Sun, Mirror and Telegraph for material to regurgitate up here. These same cowards have sat on British football’s greatest scandal for four years, with the main protagonist Murray remaining relatively unscathed.

I’ve heard different figures on how much the bank was looking for to stop a foreclosure?

I would really like to know how much we actually had to pay to halt it.

When Fergus put his money in Celtic were about £5M in debt; this was dwarfed by Rangers debts which was about 6 times that of Celtic. He initially put in £1M (with no guarantees or offer of shares) to stall a bank foreclosure – the same bank who were funding Rangers enormous debt. Paul Larkin has a great video called The Asterisk Years and this provides great detail on what the Edinburgh Establishment were doing with Rangers. It’s about 35 minutes long but well worth a watch.

Fergus got the Club for about £9.5M and did make a healthy profit when he sold it to Desmond. He also offered interest free share purchase options for fans. Over 60% of shares were owned by fans when he left.

New stadium, majority fan ownership, stopped 10 in a row. He did exactly what he said he would.
