SFA not caring enough. Morton, ooft.

658

What exactly went wrong at yesterday’s Scottish Cup draw? Plastic balls can break open, that wasn’t the problem. The rule which insists that when a ball breaks open the draw must be started again isn’t the problem either. It’s a perfectly reasonable rule, but the event still can the SFA in a dreadful light.

Imagine for a moment that you had a Cup draw to arrange live on international television. You would surely acquire the materials necessary (8 balls and a bowl), and test their effectiveness (mix the balls, pull them out, open), until you were satisfied the process was robust and not likely to embarrass the organisation.

Appropriate preparations were evidently not followed for the Scottish Cup quarter final draw.

Having got to the stage that the draw went wrong, the TV masses were then treated to the most cringe-worthy pregnant pause, as SFA president, Alan McRae completely failed to communicate, either to the watching TV audience, or to the event broadcaster SKY, why he pulled a ball out of the bowl and instead of announcing the tie, declared the draw invalid.

McRae knew the ball was opened before it was drawn, and that this invalidated the draw, but clearly the glaikit-looking TV presenter had no idea what was going on when McRae halted mid-process, neither did the TV audience. A simple explanation:

“This ball is open. Rules state the draw is invalid. We will need to start again.”

….was surely what any person possessing even remote people-awareness or communication skills would have said?

No explanation was given. We were treated instead to the site of a TV presenter trying in vain to figure out why a cup draw was scratched halfway through.

The role of SFA president requires a degree of communication skills, which Mr McRae was hugely bereft of yesterday.

As for the SFA itself, I went to their official site this morning to check the spelling of McRae’s name, only to find they still list Campbell Ogilvie as president, despite McRae’s appointment 8 months ago.

It beggars belief. They just don’t care enough to get the easy things right.

As for getting Morton at Celtic Park! Ooft.  After Ross County repeating their Hampden trick on us, Morton will fancy the same.

I know many of you have previously supported the fantastic efforts of Bundoran Bhoy. This year he is doing four runs for Solving Kids’ Cancer, in memory of Oscar Knox. His first is the Great Edinburgh (misnomer?) Run in April, the Edinburgh Marathon in May, Glasgow Men’s 10k in June and the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon in October.

He has just launched his 2016 fundraising efforts, so you can nip in here and encourage him along.

    Robert88,

It might be acceptable to you but not to me, loans are meant to be paid off that is and was part of the problem with the EBT’s no ?

Whether he likely it or not that loan needs to be repaid it is a severe drain on our resources, I mean its loanshark land ffs.

    Trad88,

That is an excellent discussion, could China bring an end to England’s command of the football TV bubble, when all the players decide that’s the place to be for the money the telly won’t be long in following especially with the potential viewing figures they have.

Will China give the western media free reign to broadcast and comment.

    =====

I think anything that challenges the current cartel has to be a good thing. Sky and the EPL may be able to outbid their competitors in Europe for now but its a different ball game when the Chinese become involved and start attracting top players at their peak. I believe football in India is going down a similiar route.

As a football fan its intruiging on many levels.

I am still patiently waiting for proposals resulting from the below:

So there are a few things on the go which may have big implications for Celtic

It’s been said for years/decades that English football is rubbish (no one watches it apparently) yet that’s never stopped the TV money rolling in, I don’t see how China signing some top players is going to lessen the TV cash for the EPL in the short to medium term especially as they’ve just signed a mega deal.

And if it did, Celtic would still be peeping from outside the show as money went from Europe to Asia.

    Trad88,

I honestly don’t see anything happening from that STV article, offered proposed changes will be filed and forgotten until the next offer is made by roughly the same group.

Won’t be holding my breath on that it’s just pish to soak the fans.

  5. CANAMALAR

I’m under the impression DD’s ‘loan’ is actually preference shares and his ‘interest’ is the dividend of 6%. I thought I read our accountancy rules changed so preference shares were to be classified on the books as debt. Dividends were to be classified as interest on the debt. So I’m saying I think the loan and debt are one in the same, and so therefore the ‘interest’ and dividend are one and the same. Anybody else able to add to that or correct it if I’m mistaken ?

  6. Canamalar

I feel his intentions are slightly more honest than an ebt, who knows say when he sells his shares that they wouldnt be repaid then?

We are both stabbing the dark here and its hypothetical, therefore pointless to an extent, however i do not understand this massive distrust of people who are running our club very very well, its bizarre.

Would you prefer the inhabitants of moe’s tavern to run the club?

  7. And I notice the “Old Firm” trademark posts earlier, I’m maybe wrong, but doesn’t the holder have to use the trademark over a 3 year period else it becomes abandoned??

True but the starting point for the Chinese should worry those pulling the strings in the EPL. If they decide to compete things get interesting. I’d say it’d have implications no one will have forseen.

    Canamalar,

Of course thats possible and Lawwells comments were in 2014, Legias comments were more recent – but although we may not be at the top table I think a rethink of the CL qualification which brings benefits to BIG clubs who are champions in smaller countries is not out the question.

    Wycombe….,

It was a fellow blogger who raised it as a point when discussing a set of results on here a cole of years ago, he advised that it was a loan that was to pay a set sum in in interest in perpetuity thus the loan could not be repaid. At the time no one challenged the interpretation, there are plenty on here are knowledgable were involved in the discussion and would have known but remained quiet. So I’d be inclined to believe its an actual loan but as always I am open to correction and would actually like to know the definitive answer on this mainly because I’ve been bleating about it since and if it’s wrong I have a few apologies to make :)

I think I would have made the same assumption if nobody on here said any different.

Just to add to my theory though, the in perpetuity part is also true for the preference shares so maybe a cross over there. I have read on football taxhavens/sevco fan blog about where they called the preference shares and dividend, a debt and interest in perpetuity and that we have been hiding this at the back of the accounts .. I think its started there to make us look bad.

In short, the C/MU game was broadcast to 700 million homes (that had access to it through their TV/satellite, etc.) … but, that doesn’t mean that everyone who could have watched it, actually did. The real number is considerably less …

but I dont think that really changes your basic idea – which is impossible hard to dispute – that the BPL is a massive enterprise.

  21. Born: 9 February, 1963, in Glasgow. Died: 5 October, 2013, in Glasgow, aged 50

George Ryan was a popular Glasgow City councillor who served on the council’s executive in numerous key roles for 18 years. He was a staunch socialist, union activist and passionate advocate of social justice. An apparent heart attack on Saturday prevented the father of three from completing his latest five-year term, due to end in 2017. A keen Celtic fan, he was reportedly on his way home from their 2-0 victory over Motherwell at Parkhead on Saturday when he died.

From 1995, Ryan was a Labour councillor for Glasgow’s Shettleston ward, often described as the poorest council ward in Britain, where his twice-a-month “surgery” at Eastbank Academy became a haven for constituents seeking his advice or simply to have an often-justified moan about council policies.

During his 18 years in the City Chambers on Glasgow’s George Square, Ryan served in numerous executive posts, latterly as executive member for business and the economy, with responsibility for economic investment, tourism, housing, social regeneration and building control.

Another anniversary, another sorrow for our family. George would have been 53 today. Still loved and missed every minute of every day. Two of his lifelong political inspirations were James Connolly and Jim Larkin, he read and studied both as a boy and took everything he learned into his life. ” We have amongst us a man of genius, of splendid vitality, great in conceptions, magnificent in his courage” James Connolly speaking of James Larkin. We had a man like that.

Loved your post, well done to your bhoy and I hope you are all enjoying a special moment as a family. Hail Hail.

I was listening to 5live last night Sean Dyche and Steve Claridge. They were discussing formations.

Football is cyclical and 4231 is on its way out. Managers have sussed how to play against that formation and the high pressing game. Sean Dyche said a lot of text book managers have been caught out as they are not adapting quick enough. They then discussed Claudio Ranieri, he gave an interview to Italian TV last week, he said he had all sorts of tactical ideas for Leicester but the players were not receptive and he thought there was no point in playing square pegs in round holes. So by and large he has stuck to 4411. The rest, as they say, is history. I hope Ronny was listening.

    Wycombe…,

If they were shares then the in perpetuity would make a lot of sense obviously if it’s shares and no an actual loan.

So here’s an idea I’ve got from Max Kaiser, the club take out a loan and buy back the preferential shares, pay the loan back with the saved dividend :) after the loan is paid off we can use the saved money to pay a players wages, obviously a complete dud just to maintain the idea of wasted money.

    Anyroadup Wycombe…,
