Space indicates why Moussa scores so many against Newco

444

I read Kenny Shiels’ comments that Newco’s Barrie McKay was better than James Forrest and Patrick Roberts, making me curious about McKay’s contract. The midfielder’s deal expires in 18 months, but when announcing his contract signing, Newco were unusually frank about their newco status:

“The winger has played a total of 78 times for Rangers, after making his first start in July 2012 against Brechin City at the age of 17.”

Before going onto explain in the same article that “The pacey winger made his Rangers debut against St Johnstone in the Light Blues’ last game of the 2011/12 season.”

If you count, that’s two debuts.  For two Rangers.

McKay was clearly Newco’s best player against Celtic, causing problems from the first minute until their challenge ran out of steam. Tying him into a long-term contract will be a priority (or selling him will be).

Yesterday I noted how Kiernan yelled abuse towards Tavernier at Scott Sinclair’s goal at Ibrox, but as this still shows, the entire Newco defence have questions to answer.
2017-01-03-1

There are five defender goal-side of Stuart Armstrong (not counting one on the wing). As the world was about to find out, Sinclair was unattended, but look at the space Moussa Dembele is in! The two central defenders, who will soon claim to be covering him, are five yards away from him. The defensive line isn’t so much a line as a horseshoe.

This is what Moussa scores so many goals against that lot, he doesn’t get this kind of space against any other opponent.

Yes, I saw the Rojos tackle how he escaped without being sent off for that is unbelievable, yesterday West Ham should not have had a man sent off , Jones I think rolled about to over egg it and contributed to the player being sent off, Man U second goal was offside but given. Ref is getting his decisions questioned today

    RE Scots role in slavery…

My brother ( a history teacher) and I attended an evening lecture at Aberdeen University given Bt good Tim and national historian Tom Devine ( he’d been my lecturer at Strathclyde many years previous)…anyhow the lecture was about the role of Scott’s in Imperialism. His basic message was that the English conquered the empire but they employed Scots to run it. He outlined how Scottish characters built through clans and remote living had positioned Scots well to survive and apply discipline in remote newly conquered corners of the globe. He outlined the particularly brutal and cruel approaches implemented by Scots towards slaves.

It was a fascinating and humbling lecture that left me with a sense that we should be ashamed of that part of our largely unknown history.

  6. This lat few years I agree it was a well run business in spite of a poor footballing product that was seeing a drop in attendance due to it’s failure to appoint managerial expertise and bolster the stockpiled money with further reward from the CL.

Only reason there is a proper manager in place now is due to the PLC having gained it’s Old Firm foresight.

KevJ, I’m good. Haven’t seen much of you posting on here recently so I hope all is good with you healthwise!

There was no swipe at MON; just pointing out that he bought and shaped his own team very early on where as Brendan Rodgers has, by and large, used the same underperforming players from the last few seasons. Circumstances dictated that money had to be spent against the doped juggernaut playing out of Ibrox. However, in terms of managing a football team Brendan Rodgers has, IMHO, used all his skill to turn seemingly poor players into high performing players by coaching and man management. This doesn’t detract from MON achievements, it just gives an opinion that Brendan Rodgers is a better manager.

As for eclipsing MON’s first season, a treble with possibly a record points total, goals scored total and maybe, just maybe, going through a season unbeaten domestically may just possibly do that.

I would also reckon that Europe has shown how far Brendan Rodgers has taken this team in his first season; the 2000 UEFA Cup run was ended in the 3rd round we played by Bordeaux after comfortably beating Jeunesse Esch and just getting through against HJK Helsinki. The away performances in Manchester, Gladbach and Astana were, again IMHO, better than the UEFA Cup in 2000.

Simply put, it’s about opinions; mine is that, on the evidence so far, Brendan Rodgers is a better manager than Martin O’Neill. You both disagree; I’m fine with that. Come May, however, we can continue the debate based upon the full first season.

  11. Unpalitable in tucked up in bed with Sevco? why not ask the 7000 that paid £49.00 to get in and see Celtic missing sitters.

They make mistakes do our board, in the name of business and PLC.

but even a fool can see that Celtic are ‘bootin sevco baws’ when we stand to get more from a VVD sell clause than they will make from Europe while they recruit from Accrington.

Lots of Celtic fans settled for how things are going nowadays.

I think the qualifiers are set for Celtic to get into the Group Stages, at least what is my vision of our Celtic, and if we didn’t it’ll become sackable.

    One potentially difficult tie?

We should be ready for that every year, any year from now on, unless the board take us backwards.

None of us can ever tell what goes on with our Board as they are basically pish at communicating in good or bad times. I guess when it’s good less questions are asked and that makes their lives easier.

As you point out they appear to have one test that we should pass if things are managed properly. At least we know on field things are now in capable hands. I’m heartened by the almost complete silence from our CEO hopefully indicating he is in his box addressing CEO business only. As it should be.

Martin knew that first season was about taking the title from the Deidclub, a very difficult ask at the time, given the experienced manager they had in charge of a multi-million pound squad, used to winning. Europe was neither his, nor our, priority, given that we had won only 2 league titles in the preceding 12 years.

Brendan knew he would have to mess up mightily not to win the title, so was able, indeed had to, ensure a CL group place in order to show improvement in the team. And in Israel, we came close to failing in that aim, remember.

So, whatever happens for the remainder of this season, given the circumstances in which they both took charge, I still think Martin’s achievements in 2000-01 will remain unsurpassed.

  14. Meant to add, given how close Brendan came to winning Lverpool’s first-ever Premiership title, and the way they played that season, offensively at least, I already knew he was a great manager.

I remember wee Joe Miller being interviewed after he scored the only goal in the 1989 SC final v Deidclub.

He said he’d had a tenner on himself at 10-1 to score the first goal.

“So, how much have you won, Joe?”.

“Er, don’t know, but happy anyway!”.

Interviewer not too bright either, right enough. Or just a snide git.

  18. Imo, our manager is the best since Mr Stein. He has transformed what is basically last season’s squad, just as Mr Stein did. He has also bought 3 players, who have contributed to the confidence factor, again just as Mr Stein with the inspired signings of Joe McBride and Willie Wallace.

Imo, the football we are playing is the best consistently entertaining in many a long year. Very often, e,g, Martin O’Neill’s teams played the outball of pumping it up the park for Sutton to head down to Henrik. Now, our midfield is one the strongest areas of the team.

And, what sells it for me, is that the whole squad are a TEAM. Witness their joining in the goals scored and the celebrations at the end. Ye cannae buy that.

Bradford Bulls should hire a consultancy team of Keech Jackson, STV’s Grant Russell, Chris Jack, Jabba’s level5pr and Kneel Dungcaster at the SPFL to reinterpret Company Law so they can survive liquidation as Same Club ?

BEATBHOY I don’t think that the realistic expectation this season was ECL Group stages; more of a nod towards the Europa League. That we managed it was, in my opinion, exceeding expectations.

The first half of the game in Israel and the first 10 minutes of the second half were ropey to say the least; however, after they went 2-0 ahead they didn’t create much at all. BR changed the shape of the team and although we were sterile in terms of attacking, we closed the game out comfortably and if you watch it again, the last 20 minutes were an object lesson in killing a game. We were in complete control of the game by then so it want’t that harrowing (though it seemed so at the time).

Remember as well that MON had the twin genius of Moravcik and Larrson to call on in 2000 as well as the likes of Lambert, Petrov and Mjallby so he had a very good nucleus to work with. He used them and added Sutton, Lennon and Thomson initially to build that winning team from the ashes of the Dalglish and Barnes debacle. It could also be argued that the reason Rangers (IL) won the league by such a margin was the incompetence of the management duo of Dalglish and Barnes rather than the lack of ability in the team.

The 2000/01 season was a great achievement but doesn’t necessarily make MON the better manager. IMHO.
