Strict liability when playing to gallery

2207

Being responsible is not always easy, especially when it comes to running a football club, where playing to the gallery offers vastly better short-term returns, and no doubt a rush of endorphins.

If your fans are engaged in an activity which regularly brings them to the attention of the courts, and your club into disrepute, it doesn’t matter what you think of the apparent offense.  You may chant an offending song in the shower every morning month, but your only public comment on the matter can be to chastise and urge fans to desist.

Clubs in Scotland voted against what is known as strict liability.  This means they are not held responsible for transgressions by their fans – and who wants to be held responsible for the actions of others who protected from personal liability by hiding in a crowd.

Part of the deal on not having strict liability is that clubs must demonstrate that they take all steps necessary to dissuade and educate their fans from carrying out criminal or regulatory offenses.  It’s simply not possible for club to tell fans their illegal actions were justified, as this would place the club itself in the firing line.

The nonsense following the Scottish Cup final is all background noise as far as we are concerned, but be aware the contagion will spread beyond those you could consider highly dysfunctional operators.

Solving Kids Cancer in memory of Oscar Knox

Our own Bundoran Bhoy will run the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday on behalf of Solving Kids Cancer.  He has put in an enormous amount of work ahead of the event, for a cause which you are only too familiar with.

26 miles is a long way to run.  You can give him some encouragement on his Just Giving page.

Good luck, Tommy.

  2. Good morning, friends from a dry, calm but grey and cloud covered East Kilbride. Looking like ideal conditions for the ParkRun (number 160 for this old codger).

Hopefully the club moves on at least ten players from the first team squad, before the season begins.

The wage bill must be astronomical these days.

Some supporters calling for new contracts to be handed out like confetti need to take a step back and be realistic.

As stated previously – there is no room for sentiment or favouritism, because if the club continues on this path, it could well lead to bankruptcy.

No dis-respect to any of the players, it’s just that I don’t like to see Celtic squandering money unnecessarily.

You are right , there is someone looking after us.

Me , I am lucky that today I can get back to, the gym, going for my third 5k in a week! Not exactly at Jobo pace, about 10 minutes behind him probably but I am happy with the progress. Then round to see my parents, gardening and vigil mass before the CL final….

    Sounds like a plan.

Manchester United are confident striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 34, will link up again with manager Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford. (Daily Mail)

But Ibrahimovic’s agent has cast doubt over his move to the club, saying where the Sweden forward ends up may be a surprise. (Expressen, via Daily Star)

Good to read that Sutton is rebalancing the SMSM narrative that Rodgers must qualify for the CL at the 1st attempt. Early attempts to destabilise and put BR under pressure will be expected in the coming weeks.

    =====================

Agreed. It always takes time for a team to gel (Strachan/Artmedia) and in a cup tie as we have experienced anything can happen.

Set expectation level phaser to normal.

  23. Watched the Aus game last night — conflicted thoughts on the score.

Didn’t want to see FF lose a goal so the best I could hope for was a draw.

At least TR did not score.

If he had we would never have seen him again.

ITV doing their best to talk him up — could not believe my ears, they even talked about JI when he came on. Incredible they stopped talking about Engerlund and spoke about the opposition players.

The commentator talked up TR, then GH gave him some praise. Even the Grauniad got in on the act — 5 things they learned included a nugget that TR was not going to be staying in Glezga for much longer as his list of suitors was getting longer by the minute.

    Not sure what happens next?

He really showed some great touches and incredible vision but his shooting was Bambi on ice. However we should try and keep him for another two years at least. Go as far as to say that we should build the team around him. He needs coaching, he needs some focus, he needs the ccasional boot up the erse but he surely is a keeper.

Hopefully now we have a more realistic wage structure in place.

That means 3 or 4 players on £40K pw if they are good enough.

He should be one of them.

He currently has the same potential as VW.

Total game changer if handled correctly.

    MADMITCH

    Interesting post.

I sort of see it from the other side.

First of all….have we not persevered with TR, injuries, loans etc.

If he doesnt want to be here and Arsenal want to pay 7m(Which i doubt),…sell him.

If TR was that good, would he not be a regular in the Celtic team.

He is a good player,….but needs loads of work.

Something tells me, he thinks he is ready for England…..I dont think he is….still has a bit to learn.

    Lets see.

We should stroll through CL qualification if we get the attitude and the fitness right.

We lost games last year in the dressing room, Malmo still can’t believe their luck.

The talent is there, it is a bit lumpy regarding some positions but we have more than enough. What we didn’t have last year was harmony, focus, leadership and belief. BR turning up a waving a scarf has got us 80% of the way there.

We are not up against much to qualify.

We are up against it when we are in turmoil of the park.

It is all about belief and mental strength.

RD for all his talent couldn’t convince himself never mind the squad.

Tom Rogic wants to play off the hoof in a free role…he wants to do it all, fair enough.

But he is neither disciplined or fit enough.

Id suggest he learn the nuts and bolts , rather than the flicks and feints which he already has in abundance.

Your strengths as a footballer remain….its what you are not so good at, that you must improve.

When TR gets that……he will be worth a lot of money…IF

If he doesn’t want to be here then he goes — no issue.

However it should not be a hard sell to convince him that with BR onboard he will develop as a player being the main man for us rather that an AW project performing cameos in the ELC at Bradford on a Tuesday night.

I think it works for both parties — we grow and harness his talent.

He leaves as a more complete player to develop his career elsewhere.

He is still a rough diamond.

Needs work of his intensity and his engagement with the game.

However he is rapidly developing into a very good player — capable at nearly all levels.

I don’t think he could currently cope with 2 games a week in the EPL.

I think he burn out, drift and end up out the squad for months at a time.
