Strict liability when playing to gallery

2207

Being responsible is not always easy, especially when it comes to running a football club, where playing to the gallery offers vastly better short-term returns, and no doubt a rush of endorphins.

If your fans are engaged in an activity which regularly brings them to the attention of the courts, and your club into disrepute, it doesn’t matter what you think of the apparent offense.  You may chant an offending song in the shower every morning month, but your only public comment on the matter can be to chastise and urge fans to desist.

Clubs in Scotland voted against what is known as strict liability.  This means they are not held responsible for transgressions by their fans – and who wants to be held responsible for the actions of others who protected from personal liability by hiding in a crowd.

Part of the deal on not having strict liability is that clubs must demonstrate that they take all steps necessary to dissuade and educate their fans from carrying out criminal or regulatory offenses.  It’s simply not possible for club to tell fans their illegal actions were justified, as this would place the club itself in the firing line.

The nonsense following the Scottish Cup final is all background noise as far as we are concerned, but be aware the contagion will spread beyond those you could consider highly dysfunctional operators.

Solving Kids Cancer in memory of Oscar Knox

Our own Bundoran Bhoy will run the Edinburgh Marathon on Sunday on behalf of Solving Kids Cancer.  He has put in an enormous amount of work ahead of the event, for a cause which you are only too familiar with.

26 miles is a long way to run.  You can give him some encouragement on his Just Giving page.

Good luck, Tommy.

The term was used to describe members of The Fenian Brotherhood and the Irish Republican brotherhood.

These were organisations that believed in an Independent Republic of Ireland.

Within the British Isles the word Fenian was Later bastardised ,and was used as a derogatory term for Catholics ,by those that disliked Catholics.

In Scotland is has by extension be stretched to include Celtic supporters ,as detractors of the Celtic support want to pigeonhole us ,as all being Catholic and supporters of the Fenian goal of an independent Irish Republic.

The term ,tarred with the same brush ,could not be more apt.

In more recent times in Scotland it has become slightly sociably acceptable for Fenians to identify themselves as Fenians ,as they are proud of what they support.

Like the modern black man referring to himself a Nigga.

It has become socially acceptable for a black man to call himself ,Nigga ,but it is seen as a slight if a white man were to use the term.

I know of Catholics and Irish republicans who are happy to call each other Fenians ,but are aware that many none Fenians use the word as a slight.

    Me .

    I am an agnostic .

    I am a Fenian.

But first and foremost I am a Celtic supporter.

    Melbourne Mick,

Thanks Tiny Tim for the helpful analysis.

The term Fenian is an ancient term related to what is known as the Fenian cycle, Fionn mac Cumhaill and his warriors the Fianna.

It is closely linked with Clan Donald in Scotland for example, see link. (see the ancestry chart also).

The word was chosen by what became known as the ‘Fenians’ in the late 19th Century due to it’s origins with Celtic mythology. It doesn’t have anything to do with Catholic or Protestant and is actually an important link between Scotland and Ireland.

As Tiny Tim explains, it is now viewed by some as a derogatory name for an Irish Catholic, as is often the case this is wrong.

    Great photo of Danny .

Our former left back, Jim Kennedy, standing to the left of Brian Scott, looked to be enjoying the game as much as we did.

The photographer in the photo , looks like Matt McGlone . Matt managed to a hold of a press tag so he could get sat beside the other photographers and get close up to the action to get some good shots of our players.

Rangers chief Stewart Robertson laughs off suggestions Celtic hired Brendan Rodgers after cup celebrations

A NEWSPAPER article said Dermot Desmond moved for the former Liverpool boss after witnessing “over-the-top” celebrations from the Ibrox board following last month’s Scottish Cup final.

    Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson

STEWART Robertson has laughed off claims Rangers are responsible for the appointment of Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

A newspaper article said Dermot Desmond moved for the former Liverpool boss after witnessing “over-the-top” celebrations from the Ibrox board following last month’s Scottish Cup semi-final win for Gers .

Robertson has dismissed suggestions of gloating from his fellow directors – and it’s believed Irish tycoon Desmond had left Hampden before the penalty shoot-out that confirmed victory.

The reports claimed the behaviour of the Ibrox board was more akin ‘to the Rangers end’ but managing director Robertson has defended the reaction of his fellow directors after recent years of strife and financial turmoil.

Rangers MD Stewart Robertson helps launch Club 1872

He said: “I did see those reports. The Rangers directors were ecstatic at winning.

“However, you have to remember it was a release of four or five years of hard graft trying to get the club out of the hands of the guys who had it.

“We jumped up and cheered to celebrate a goal, we jumped up and cheered when the shoot-out was finished. I defy anybody, in any directors’ box in the world, not to get out of their seats in that situation.

“It was definitely not grand-standing. Yes, we celebrated, absolutely, we’re only human. It was exuberant celebration, to use the word of the day.”

Rangers lost the final to Hibs and Robertson admits it was a reminder of how far the club still have to travel.

Mark Warburton has bolstered his squad with the addition of Joey Barton, Jordan Rossiter, Matt Crooks and Josh Windass and there will be more arrivals soon.

But Robertson is adamant Rangers will not jeopardise their financial recovery, even as they prepare to over-invest in the short term.

He added: “We didn’t win the final and maybe that was a reality check as to where we are in terms of our progress.

“If we want to try to win the league next season we have to bring in a decent standard of player and Joey Barton is a fantastic player

“We don’t work with a budget. We very much work on the manager bringing us a player and we look at the value. We work on a case-by-case basis. There is no set budget.

“Cash wise, we are just about breaking even – or maybe just a wee bit below that. You may say a loss but I’d say there is investment needed to be made in the club.”

Warburton is in the process of building a squad but the club will also look to sell in time if the deal is right.

Robertson added: “In due course, some of them will be sold and will create a value. Transfer fees are an income stream this club has not had for a number of years.”

Strong, hard players with ability are required for the Celts of the future.

The failures against Legia Warsaw.Maribor,Malmo and Molde must be dumped immediately

Weaklings like Lustig,Brown,Ambrose Boyata,Johansen,Armstrong should seek pastures new if Rodgers knows anything about football.

None of this nonsense about being better players under a new manager.

Get them cleared and get proven Midfielders and strikers in now.

    Political and sporting in particular.

Just as well then that Atletico are a Spanish institution then. Unless you think Celtic were a Norwegian institution for the last 2 years?

If I included Pedro Opeka, Claudio Lepratta, Carlos Mugica, and Jorge Luis Borges would you see them as symbolic of an Argentinian approach to Institutions.
