Tear down the walls of footballs cartels

534

Former Bolton Wanderers chairman, Phil Gartside, lost his battle with cancer yesterday. During Bolton’s 18 year Premier League tenure, Gartside wanted Celtic and Rangers in the league, as part of a reorganisation which would have seen a second tier Premier League created.

His motivation was the realisation that English football’s model was inherently dysfunctional. Teams like Bolton would over-commit to the player contracts necessary to keep them in the league, but with everyone else doing the same thing, it was only a matter of time before they finished in the bottom three. Less than 3 years since relegation Bolton face a winding-up order this month over a £2.2m debt to HMRC.

‘The Gartside Plan’ for league reorganisation found little support among his Premier League peers. Each passing TV deal poured ever-more money into the Premier League but the model remains dysfunctional. Those relegated regularly face dire consequences – and that’s before the bubble bursts.

As English and Welsh clubs who have dropped out of the Premier League continue to deal with the consequences, Europe’s mega-rich clubs are unhappy with their return from Champions League football. The relative democratisation of Champions League qualification, introduced by Michel Platini, which sees more clubs from smaller countries reach the group stage, is seen as a problem to some of Europe’s richest.

They want games against Manchester United, not Dinamo Zagreb. So do TV companies and sponsors.  The football industry in Europe operates a series of EU sanctioned cartels.  These sanctioned exceptions were granted on the basis that football is a sport, not a conventional business.  The more top clubs act like businesses, not sporting institutions, the more reason to tear down the walls of these carters.

There is no moneyball strategy in operation at Celtic – we sell players to balance the books.

I explained yesterday that not to sell is NOT an option for the following reasons:

    1) The players wanted to go to the riches and glamour of the EPL.

    2) Even if they had stayed we would have had to pay the EPL wages or lose them for nothing in a couple of years as they waited out their contract.

    3) Players waiting out their contracts would be disgruntled and would not perform.

    4) Paying exhorbitant EPL wages to a few players would unsettle the squad.

    5) Paying exhorbitant EPL wages and not selling the likes of Wanyama, Forster and VVD, would have pushed up our debt to around £50 million.

    6) To service this debt would cost £5 million per season before a ball was kicked.

    7) Having such a large debt would severely restrict our ability to bring in new players.

    8) Having such a large debt would severely restrict any infrastructure improvements.

Your fixation with the demise Peter Lawwell is not based on any coherent reasoning and certainly makes no financial sense – so I am thinking it must be personal – what exactly do you believe he has done to you?

  2. It is heartbreaking but the whole story is coming to its final chapter. I reckon it is best to be like little children when trying to really understand whats going on.

  15. Morning bhoys and ghirls. Celt55 I noticed you asking about The Foggy Dew last night. The word I always sang was huns ( I’m 56) but remember my dad singing sons like your mammy. I checked my kindle as I downloaded a book called 201 Irish Song Lyrics and it says sons in it. I personally think it’s originally been sons and we the Celtic support have changed it to huns back in the 70s.

  17. I’v noticed that Mr Pastry gave the PL and the CFC board haters they’r dinner a couple of days ago and challenged any one of them to prove him wrong with the figures he posted on his article, some made a half arsed effort at it but fell way short, then as usual changed the subject, but what I did notice was that the predictable ones who push the anti PL CFC Board (you know the ones that keep using the DOWNSIZING word) stayed well clear of it, and why did they do that? I’ll tell you, because Mr Pastry was bang on with his post, Mr Pastry I doff my cap to you sir for one thing, one thing that the agenda mob just can’t do because they are allergic to it, ……telling the truth, and proving it, once again, well done sir.

The only EPL-level wage that is paid at Celtic Park is that which belongs to PL.

£20k a week and, it all adds up to £1million a year once ye take all the jiggery-pokery into account…..you’ll no see that being released by the coasha-auditors….

Hail Hail, ya auld fenian eeejit:)….hope yer wee mammy’s well.

Anyway…..30,000 empty seats at Celtic Park….does that not constitute evidence that, the waffle being spun by Mr Pastry is a pile p#sh that has reduced Celtic FC to a rudderless ship were, nobody is accountable for any misgovernance at ‘any’ level because, every employee at Celtic Park is bondaged by, confidentiality-clauses which begs the question….what is there to hide ?

This same erudite, upstanding statesman, fantasy figure of the Happy clapper section of Celtic fans, cost the club £20 million in a CL-money-pot because….he sat Bobo Balde in the stand because BB said that he wouldn’t be signing a confidentiality-clause and, was going to devote a section of a book which….mysteriously was stopped from being released, a section devoted to the rudderless style in which the club was run…Hmmmm ?

Anyway, PL ordered his puppet manager, WGS to instruct Bobo that he’d be sitting in the stand if he didn’t fall in line with company policy and sign the C-C.

This was an attempt by PL to try and force BB out of the club, the way that he did when he threatened Kenny Miller…when KM said “Peter told me that, if I don’t leave just now, I’ll find myself 6th in the pecking order of strikers which is disappointing as I’ve been on a decent scoring run lately.”

The question is….why did WGS not step in and say – “This is my striker…I’ll decide where he is in the pecking order.”…..Oh, and don’t be surprised to see WGS(DD & PL’s puppet), being wheeled out to tell us all that it’ll be great for Scottish football when Rangers come back….watch this space…

Well, trying to freeze Bobo out….it didny work and, Celtic fans were forced to watch, Stephen McManus and, Gary Caldwell being bullied off the pitch by the likes of, Cousan, Darcheville(sp), Lafferty….etc

When did ye ever see a Celtic captain being bullied off the pitch ?

    Billy McNeill ?

    Danny McGrain ?

    Roy Aitken ?

    Paul McStay ?

    Tom Boyd ?

    Jackie MacNamara ?

    Paul Lambert ?

    Neil Lennon ?

    Scott Brown ?

    ….Nah, me neither.

But….Celtic under Lawwell’s watch are rudderless….more often than not…on the pitch.

    C’Mon the ‘Trust’ :))

Hail Hail ya auld eejit…..mind, dont be releasing the hounds on me :)

  23. Just read the article someone linked to a couple of days ago on Glasgow Celtic chat “The Brutalization of Celtic and Ronny Deila by the Mainstream media and fans”

In which the blogger bemoans the malignant influence of the papers and broadcasters on the views of Celtic fans, particularly with regard to RD.

He entreats fans to stop buying and participating, and then proves how free he is from such influence by writing

“Then next season Rangers or Sevco or whatever you want to call them come back up….”

What was it Nancy Sinatra sang?

“And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like….”

  24. Victory……outright victory for Timdom, will only come about ‘if’ the gallant crusade that Auldheid and his res:12 rebel band are, bravely pursuing reaches a positive conclusion.

If these, bold, gallant, blessed bunch of Celtic Supporters clinch this, earth shattering victory, I would say that, that achievement….must be up there with the greatest victory that his grand ole club has ever pulled out of the bag.

    I’m talking….up there with, Lisbon 1967.

I’m sure that, the remaining lions and, those who look down on us from above….would celebrate such a victory as though they were still in the Estadio Nacional.

It could be looked back upon this, should it happen….as probably ‘thee’ greatest victory that Celtic would ever achieve….the one that get’s the club out of anti-Celtic Scotland.

    Please let it be so…..
