The defence has seen most additions. Jozo Simunovic, Saidy Janko and Dedryck Boyata arrived, with Tyler Blackett on loan from Manchester United. Belgian, Logan Bailly, came in as our backup keeper after a decent career in Belgium, Germany and Switzerland.

Two attacking midfielders were signed: Scott Allan, who has made a couple of cameo appearances, and Ryan Christie, who will further gestate in Inverness until the end of the season.

Nadir Ciftci was the manager’s primary striking target, and although he arrived early in the window, his start has been hampered by a six game domestic ban, while the Champions League qualifiers arrived too early for him. A lot of store is being placed on his and Leigh Griffiths’ shoulders.

Will they be stronger than the Griffiths, Scepovic, Guidetti offering of last season? Will they be good enough for the challenge ahead? Place your bets ladies and gentlemen (and opposed to send me inappropriately emotional messages).

I read lots of comment about Steven Fletcher or and Michu potentially coming to Celtic over the last few days. They were players who Celtic enquired about earlier in the window but neither was interested in coming to Scotland. They are in the league they want to play in, we were not remotely on their radar.

Oh, and the van Dijk deal was for £13m, not the £11.5m reported earlier. Think we might have some Fraser/Victor reflected value in this deal.

That’s all folks!

Every genuine Celtic supporter on this planet is being taking for a ride by this self serving feather nesting board. Unfortunately 55% of Celtic supporters are too stupid too arrogant and too ignorant to know any better. Especially the faithful through and through morons. I blame kafflik schools.

  2. Chairbhoy,

You are looking at it in a way no-one else does.

This all came about from you claiming Paul said we had an 8m net spend.

    He didn’t.

Yes we’ve brought more money in than we have spent in this window but to claim a club has not spent money just because they have made money is just daft imo

  3. GORDYBHOY64,

I don’t mind us so much gambling on young “known” talent, it’s a risk but not costing us a fortune.

But agree – we are well overdue paying out for a quality striker…

    Hail Hail

How do you know what the KPIs are at Celtic?

I bet you have never seen PLs

If profit was the only KPI, would we have taken Robbie, Roy, Gravesen, Hartley, Robson, Shaun etc

We are a great business who invest and operate in a volatile market without a lot of chips

    My mantra is:

Make love more and watch Celtic more

    Hail hail

  5. Timgreen Maybe if our club redeveloped Barrowfild Training Ground and the under 20s play there home games there plenty of Celtic Supporters would turn up.but as usual our board just don’t have it.as someone said early on big changes are needed at Board room level.

  6. GEORDIE MUNRO @ 1:16 AM,

“You are looking at it in a way no-one else does.”

Yes I know, I tend to do that, when Paul intimates we spent £8M over the window, I think, “no we didn’t, we gained £7M over the window”.

The spend is surely irrelevant unless it’s taken in the context of money in, turnover, profit etc.

Otherwise, without context, it means nothing.

    Hail Hail

  7. Chairbhoy,

I’ll have to remember that one when justifying some of ma daft purchases.

Ye spent 300 hunner quid on an aquarium filter?

Naw I gained £xyz oot ma wages. :)

  8. I think Lustig may be the answer at the back if he could stay fit.

    He has experience.

We never seemed to have a designated leader in that area in recent years.

I always think of the scene in the Full Monty when the guys could not get in synch.

One guy explained it was like the Arsenal defense. He explained it by saying its like when Tony Adams sticks his hands up and everyone steps out at same time.

Our defense needs to designate a leader who calls when to stay and when to go.

VVD has many plusses but was not a leader and it showed at times.

    Who will be the leader?

Maybe Boyata?Simunovic despite his youth or will Efe or Mulgrew suddenly prosper with responsibility?

My bet for the long term is young O’Connell but do any of the above fit the requirement?

  9. Coneybhoy. When we signed gravason we had a spend what we earn policy

That finished about 5 years ago when we sold mcgeady

We now have spend as little as possible and gamble policy and if we lose gamble then use the money we banked from selling our only Saleable assists

Ps his kpi’s were in the accounts a few years ago. Achieved max bonus as no debt and positive cash flow ( ie some cash in bank). Now you know why he is always excited at AGM balance sheet. Nothing else matters

  10. GEORDIE MUNRO @ 1:30 AM,

Well, I hope the filter is working out well for you…

But do you think you’d have still bought it, if it was more than your wages?

    Hail Hail

  13. Well “that’s All Folks” for me as well!

I have followed Celtic since the early sixties. Even when I emigrated to Canada I kept in touch prior to CelticTV. Every available avenue was explored to find out how the club was doing. I have shares in the club and will continue to hold them, for old times sake. I have subscribed to CelticTV since it started as Audio only, but that is it. No more. I type this in one of my four Celtic shirts.

Why? Is it because we do not buy top players or achieve success by entering the CL? Is it because the team plays turgid football? Is it because we have a coach who is poor tactically? Nope, it is none of these things. It is simply that there is no hope of substantial improvement because of how the club is run.

In spite of lesson after lesson on how to assemble a winning team(in Europe) from clubs with less resources, we fail to pick up on the fundamental lessons. Do you think Malmo or Maribor were shopping in the English market? Of course not, they know they cannot function in rich markets. They look elsewhere and pick up journey men that they mold into a team formation that suits their competencies. What do we do, we explore the bottom end of the English market…pick up loan players or gambles in the form of youth players. The hope is that we discover an unpolished gem that can later be sold on for a vast profit to permit us to do the same all over again. The current strategy of find an unpolished gem, polish it for two years and sell onwards, means we shall always be trying to build a team. Wait you say, that is not the whole truth. Ronny will develop our youth and our projects. Let us say he is successful, which is a big if, they will also be sold on to the EPL, without the cost of acquisition interfering with profit levels. Youth development is partially based on loaning out players to gain experience. However, perhaps the loaning out will destroy the potential that some of these boys have, rather than develop it. McGregor seems to be the only evidence that we have of the effectiveness of this strategy. If that is the evidence, what is your conclusion on how it is going to work?

OK, some of you are thinking that I am out of touch with the reality in which the club exists. Perhaps, but I do know that we cannot be at the big table any more. Resources have determined that, but we could be Oh so much better than we are. Clubs like Malmo and Batesov illustrate this.

I do not have a fix for this. I am not being paid to find one, but there are clear errors of strategy. Here are a few.

One, Ronnie is wedded to a single system that fails against clever teams. Two, he has no Plan B. Three, we are shopping in the wrong market…forget the English market…all divisions of it. Four, develop a team with a mix of youth and experience. A functional striker in the 28 ish age range could have been obtained from lesser European leagues(Hungary, Sweden, etc). Do not only shop for the next big thing in strikers. The same applies to other areas of the team. Five, fix the scouting system…it is clearly not working.

Perhaps the major problem is at the highest level…. because year after year it is the same old, same old. If the Board does not see that at best it is only staying afloat, then it is time to change the Board. Does the Malmo Board only plan to stay afloat? We can be so much better than we are, but…….

Anyway, regrets over the long post and the negative nature of it, but when my year subscription to CelticTV is up, I am history. This is not a knee jerk reaction but one that has been marinating for 3-4 years.

Good luck to all of you in your support for the team.

  14. Coneybhoy

Brown is a captain figure and motivator.

But he is not an organiser and plays ahead of the defense so cannot dictate position or flow of defense.

Also think we need a true defensive mid to protect our central defenders.

Bitton has talent but not defensively.

They get pulled out of position to ften because of this and with no designated leader both tend to go to the same areas.

We have a tendency to ballwatch so giving one the organisationtial duty should help stop both doing at same time

  15. Rebu567

I understand how you feel but theres always hope that things will improve.

Historically it is what we Celtic fans have clung to.

The present custodians inspire no real faith despite the claims that they are supporters like the rest of us.

Nothing lasts forever so hopefully change will come sooner than later.

Celtic are now ranked 43rd in the world. Yippee!

right behind the mighty Levadia Tallinn of Estonia.

Don’t worry I’m sure their board earn slightly more than Celtics.

  17. Rebus Malmö are the classic team we struggle against Smaller income. Smaller support

    Why

Bet you the Malmö AGM talks about balance sheets about 1% and team and players 99%

We are a club fixated on zero debt

Clubs like Malmö are run as football clubs

And ps. Malmö have no Sky TV money so no happy clappers excuse there

There is absolutely no way that we have spent 8 million pounds this transfer window. To suggest such is just lies and spin. I suspect the latter fed straight from the top.

We are a Leigh Griffiths injury away from a total shambles up front despite having cashed in the family jewels yet again. Unfortunately now we’re out of jewels.

As our squad weakens our chances of CL qualification diminishes substantially and my question to the host of this site and all our other number crunchers is; who do we sell next year to plug the financial hoe the VVD money has ben used to plug this year?

  20. Andy comfortably wins 4th set 6-1 to advance 3 sets to 1.

Good workout for Andy. He had a load of aces.

Details of charges against the Green and Whyte team will no doubt be made public.

    HH and good night.

  22. Been posting on this site since 2008. The world has changed since then. So has the SPL. So has Celtic. So has CQN.

Just need to say that my love for the Club is emotional, traditional and deeply rooted in family history….I am objective enough to recognize this and also to recognize the only constant is change…..

However… I was home in August and was in Paradise for two home matches. They both had a similar pattern… Celtic style initially followed by capitulation. When I left after Malmo scored their goal at the death I was morose… now I know why. I knew a transfer window was being defined with their last gasp second goal. I knew I had seen the script before…but where?

Martin ONeil said prepare for life in the slow lane. Gordon Strachan (who I loved) kept us motoring along for a while….We are now in the hard shoulder. But it has been coming a long time. I watched with jaw dropping amazement as a dying club had the sinister minister and other MIB make the most absurd decisions to faciilitate the Euro cash flow to The Mint when he desperately needed it……The Scottish MSM facilitated this and their silence with regards to The Mint even now condemns them as guilty parties……..Then I watched as theoriginalsadiesbhoy inferred, the Willo Flood transfer window presented them with more Euro money in 2009, followed in 2010.

Its a shame really, because although the world, the SPL and Celtic PLC changes, my heart remains locked into family history and personal memories. I enjoyed my trips to Paradise in August, but both visits saw me witness the ghost of Celtic past, then the ghost of Celtic present, on the pitch. Fact is the finanacial paradigm rules us all and even our culture, heart, tradition and source of identity.

So…… Whilst I will continue to follow Celtic and support the team… Its a pleasure that reminds of family and friends past and present. Precious. However I I do so with more than a realistic opinion of the forces that shape the Club.

In another part of my life I teach, and I study financial markets. And Bhoy are they changing too.

Both are presented as showbusiness….Or maybe its just Globalization taking the Piss?

    Anyway…Thats All Bhoys… Right?

  23. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

All CFCs efforts were in getting as good a deal for the sale of VVD ….nothing else mattered that much

We have kids in defence …maybe those kids will be a good as the kids we had last season ….I have big doubts on this …

A huge surplus again …no striker again ..Ciftci will not do ……a rag tag collection of kids, lower league players and loanees

This will prove a masterstroke or a disaster …in our current financial position …why take risks

Some profess satisfaction …other console themselves with some post revisionism ..VVD wasn’t very good anyway ..apparently

Hoe about we sign some decent , experience pros to add depth and substance to our team

John Collins is the only person at CFC with decent world / European experience …the manager doesn’t have it , neither do any of the players

The inexperience and naivety surrounding CFC is breathtaking considering the size of our club ….

Who is for sale next season….??

    That’s the only strategy we’ve got ….

From a team containing …Wamyama, Samaras, Hooper et al …to this squad …..great job ..

FORMER Rangers owner Craig Whyte and ex-chief executive Charles Green have been arrested as part of an investigation into the “alleged fraudulent acquisition” of the club in 2012.

Mr Green, 62, arrived at Livingston police station in West Lothian earlier today, where he was understood to have been interviewed by officers about his time at the Glasgow club.

The businessman took control at the Ibrox club in 2012 after completing a purchase of Rangers’ assets and business after it went into administration and liquidation earlier that year. He stepped down as chief executive in 2013.

Mr Whyte, 44, who took control of Rangers in 2011 before the club entered administration, attended a police station in Glasgow later in the day for questioning.

A spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm a 44-year-old man has been arrested and is presently detained in police custody in connection with an ongoing investigation into an alleged fraudulent acquisition of Rangers FC in 2012.

“A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

An earlier police statement said a 62-year-old man had been arrested and detained over the same investigation.

A third man, understood to be former Rangers co-administrator David Whitehouse, was also arrested after being detained in England.

Police said in a statement: “Following a Police Scotland operation on Tuesday, a 50-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into the alleged fraudulent acquisition of Rangers FC in 2012.

“Around 6am officers from Police Scotland’s economic crime unit, assisted by officers from Cheshire, attended at an address in England and detained the 50-year-old man.

“He has now been arrested and is presently detained in police custody.”

All three men are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

  32. Good morning CQNers,

Only those who weren’t paying attention when Ronny Deila joined us would be surprised with the comings and goings in this transfer window.

This is what Peter Lawwell said on the Ronny’s appointment …

“He’s the right man because he’s intelligent, modern, good track record,” said Peter Lawwell, the Celtic chief executive, at the media conference to confirm Deila’s appointment. “He fits perfectly with where we are. We develop our own. We find uncut diamonds, put them in the Champions League. He’s ideal for that.”

The reporter (Richard Wilson) expanded on the theme..

His task was to replace the older players in the squad with younger ones while reducing the wage bill.

Most coaches rail against restrictions, but Deila welcomed the stringent conditions. His approach is to develop individual talent while fitting it into the overall framework of the team’s tactics. He insists that his sides play a high-tempo, industrious, attacking style, and younger players tend to be more open to the demands of an idealist.

Please bear with me and let me repeat… < younger players tend to be more open to the demands of an idealist

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27706756

Our manager wants younger, inexperienced players to buy into his beliefs on how to play his game and that would lead one to wonder how he handles the relationship with the Mulgrews, Browns, Stokes and Commons of the team?

By definition quality doesn’t come cheap, Ronny did and I fear the ambitions of the Ronny project may falter and prove expensive in the long term.
