The Bank, financial doping and moral hazard

955

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson’s comments to yesterdays’ Herald are worthy of attention.  During the summer, when United received a £1m bid from Rangers for David Goodwillie and Blackburn Rovers were hovering, Bank of Scotland, took an active part in the deliberations.  Thompson told the Herald, “The bank wanted me to take £1.2m for him, but I said no to that. I had to stand up against the bank.”

Thompson more than doubled the money on offer for Goodwillie, allowing him to shave over £2m off their bank debt, but this exchange took place only a few months after the same bank told former Rangers chairman, Alastair Johnston, to accept the bid for the club from Motherwell born thousandaire Craig Whyte or the bank would demand same-day repayment of Rangers borrowings.

Bank of Scotland, part of Lloyds Banking Group (LBG), are significantly exposed to Scottish football and required a taxpayer bail-out two years ago, so although their interference in the running of clubs could seem overbearing, we shouldn’t be surprised at it.  It’s business, and if you are employed at LBG with a responsibility to your taxpayer-shareholder, it’s necessary business.

Fortunately, Celtic are free from such interference, as are Rangers, thanks to their aforementioned benefactor, but if a liquidation event at a large club threatened income streams to the league I would be amazed if the Bank didn’t use the ‘Vote Newo FC  into the SPL or repay your borrowings immediately’ line.

Stephen Thompson, who sits on the SPL board, might not have a choice on whether or not to vote a Newco FC into the SPL ahead of 30 Scottish Football League clubs, but he and his fellow board members will be able to set the tariff on any exceptional league entry to what would become a financially privileged football franchise.

12 seasons of cumulative benefit from financial mis-dealings should result in 12 seasons of penury at whatever points rate the league calculate benefit was accrued.  For one scenario I have in mind, around 15 points per season sounds fair, with an expunging from the records of any trophies ‘won’ by Financial Doping.

This is measured, deliverable, is in the power of the SPL board to impose, and sets a minimum moral hazard to inhibit future mis-deeds.

  1. I heard on the radio this morning that weather forecasters in Africa (I think it was South Africa) can be imprisoned if they get the weather forecast wrong, sentences can be as much as 10yrs.

I wonder if that’s the reason behind the animosity to weather reports on CQN :¬)

  7. RANGERS are on the trail of £1.5million-rated Swede Mervan Celik.

And manager Ally McCoist is poised to strike a loan deal with Arsenal for their teenage strike sensation Benik Afobe.

Midfielder Celik is out of contract with Gothenburg club GAIS and is available for free.

The 21-year-old is desperate for a fresh start and Ibrox chiefs are ready to pounce.

Record Sport understands an offer has been tabled and sources in Sweden insist the player is keen on a switch to Glasgow.

Rangers would be required to pay compensation because Celik was nurtured by GAIS but that could be as little as £100,000.

The player is an exciting attacking midfielder who can operate on both wings and he cracked 14 goals in 27 appearances in his last season to alert a string of scouts.

A mainsay of the Sweden Under-21 set-up, the playmaker is on the fringes of Eric Hamren’s senior squad.

Middlesbrough and Fulham have kept tabs along with Italians Genoa and Parma but Turks Gaziantepspor are leading the chase alongside Rangers.

Last night agent Hasan Cetinkaya said: “There are many clubs who have been interested and, had it been any other player, it would have been clear long ago but Mervan has been calm.

“Right now it is about two clubs and Mervan has not decided yet.”

Gunners kid Afobe was selected for England’s Under-20 World Cup squad in summer before Arsene Wenger pulled him out to join his first-team squad’s pre-season tour of Germany.

In August he was called up by England Under-21 manager Stuart Pearce as a replacement for Manchester United striker Danny Wellbeck but injury denied him his debut at that level.

London-born Afobe, who turns 19 next month, has yet to start a competitive match for Arsenal – although he played against New York Red Bulls in the Emirates Cup in July and spent the second half of last season on loan to Huddersfield, where he formed a prolific partnership with Scots scoring sensation Jordan Rhodes.

Afobe scored five goals in 12 starts as Huddersfield made the League Two play-offs and is back at Arsenal continuing his football education.

The powerful 6ft striker would be Rangers’ second loan signing from Arsenal after defender’s Kyle Bartley spell at Ibrox.

But McCoist may wait until later in the transfer window before making a move – or until he knows whether Nikica Jelavic will stay or go.

McCoist will also take a close look at Estonian Enar Jaager, who is expected to arrive for a trial next week.

The 27-year-old, primarily a right-back, has just left Norwegians Aalesunds and is a free agent.

Much-travelled Jaager, who has had spells with Ascoli in Italy and with Moscow Torpedo, won his 84th cap in the Euro 2012 play-off with Ireland in November.

Scots police probe anti-Catholic and Celtic-hating online rant made by English ref Jeff Winter

Jan 13 2012 Exclusive by John Ferguson

SCOTS police are investigating a sickening rant against Celtic and the Catholic church posted on former top English ref Jeff Winter’s website.

The internet diary entry called the Pope a “dress wearing, Nazi, kiddy-fiddling protector” and asked if altar boys would be “abused in celebration” after Celtic beat Rangers last month.

Celtic yesterday reported the matter to Strathclyde Police, who confirmed they had begun a probe.

Winter’s website was taken down shortly before 10am yesterday, hours after our story was published highlighting the online rant.

Winter, 56, is a former senior English Premier League referee, who took charge of the 2004 FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Millwall.

In his profile on Twitter, he claims to support Middlesbrough FC and Rangers.

The blog entry on Winter’s website told how “bad tidings” had been received about Celtic’s 1-0 Old Firm victory on December 28. It then launched into the hate-filled diatribe.

Elsewhere on the site there are other entries about Celtic, including a slur against Parkhead legend Jock Stein.

Winter is travelling in New Zealand and his mobile phone was switched off yesterday.

Winter worked as a pundit for Sky Sports and Talksport Radio after retiring as an official in 2004. He now speaks on the after-dinner circuit.

Football pundit Gabriele Marcotti said he contacted Winter to find out if the site had been hacked and received a reply saying his website manager was looking into it.

Celtic demanded an apology when Winter called Aiden McGeady a “cheating b*****d” and branded Neil Lennon “a hate figure” in 2010.

Winter could be prosecuted under the Communications Act. The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Bill, which was passed last month, has still to receive royal assent.

‘Essentially, ernie and stfb, are stating that, unless Celtic FC actively oppose the possible re-entry of huns newco to the SPL, they will cease to support Celtic.’

    No.

Essentially what I’m saying is that if Celtic are party to a deal that allows a newco huns straight into the SPL they will cease to be the Celtic that I have supported since the 1960s.

  17. merseycelt (and Big Joe)

No offence taken at the use of the word mince. I don’t even regard that fine dish as suitable to be considered a derogatory term.

Drambowie Celt made a fairly accurate, for me (I can’t and won’t speak for ernie), distinction in your interpretation of my view.

I can never lose my love for the old club Celtic but, if we chose to continue participating in a league with acknowledged cheaters, then I can no longer follow them in a rigged SPL competition. It is the same as inviting you to bet on a game you know is rigged.

I am no masochist. There are enough unseen and unaccountable forces against us without accepting these handicaps formally and bargaining with the cheater.

Would you play golf with the recently deceased N. Korean leader if you had agreed that he started with a 20 stroke handicap. After you posted your legitimate score, even if it was under par, he’d just come and announce that he’d went round the course in 18 (net 38) including holes in one at every par 5, a feat even legendary golfers like the “Great White Goldfish”Blantyre Kev or ” I came out in 32″ johnnybhoy, would be reluctant to claim.

I am not a default anti-board poster. I regard them as convenient scapegoats in most of our arguments on here. But, if they say we cannot live without a Rangers, they will be mistaking my view and, I believe, the mood music of many Celts.

I am not going to insult those Celts who would continue to attend regardless but I do not see the point. Unconditional Love? Not of the masochistic kind, thank you very much. I cannot love those that would demean and despise me and see me only as a source of revenue.

Many have stated that this is how they feel about the Board at all times, even during the bling and frippery of transfer windows, but I have NEVER had that feeling about our club and custodians previously.

I do not believe that I will be forced to make the decision to walk away, however. I expect Rangers to be allowed to die without any conferred dignity.

    No.

Essentially what I’m saying is that if Celtic are party to a deal that allows a newco huns straight into the SPL they will cease to be the Celtic that I have supported since the 1960s.

    Me too.

Although if Celtic PLC vote against and everybody else votes for and it’s passed where does that leave us? Do we think “Oh well they made their feelings known but what can you do?” or “They knew that would happen it was an easy get out to appease the fans, while knowing the status quo would be maintained” or “Why aren’t we resigning from this corrupt organisation and re-applying to start from the bottom. The fans will stick with us, and all of Scottish Football will benefit apart from those cowards in the SPL.”

  24. weeminger

If the huns where liquidated and a newco allowed straight back into the SPL I’d expect Celtic to offer to fund the legal challenge from the club that is denied their rightful place in the SPL due to them getiing the place.

  25. tomtheleedstim on

Weeminger – I can’t speak for anyone else on this issue but I want to see Celtic play hardball on this issue.

Not a vote against newhuns to appease us lot, but a genuine effort to ensure honesty and integrity is to the fore.

Other people have stated it better than me. We want the SPL/SFA to simply abide by the rules (for once)

Summed up – justice, that’s what I want.

    ‘What to do ?’

Celtic can stop it by making it clear from the start that if the SPL votes to allow a newco huns straight into the SPL Celtic will resign from the league with immediate effect.

The threat would be enough to ensure that the plan is scuppered.

If however the SPL insists on allowing a newco huns into the SPL Celtic could approach UEFA and say that we weren’t prepared to be involved in a scheme which makes a mockery of their financial fair play policy and ask for their assistance in allowing us to join another league.

I agree with that. I’d also suggest that it might rally the fans and lead to fuller a fuller stadium and thus negate to an extent any loss in tv revenue.

Why are we all assuming that a newco will arise? The current cost per month [refer to RFC accounts] to run them is circa £37m per annum.I would assume that ay newco would not have any access to credit facilities and virtually all costs would require upfront payment even a suitably pruned newco would still require circa £20-£25m minimum per annum to fund a squad, hire a stadium and training ground, back of house facilities etc.

Are we assuming that all the bears will return to watch a very much pruned squad with no hope of european access for years to come?..just a thought
