The Craig Whyte narrative. Kris, Leo.

1626

Best news of the day?  Kris Commons wants to be involved tomorrow against Barcelona.  I doubt Kris is anywhere near match fit, so there’s no chance of him starting on Wednesday against Astana, but a 15 minute cameo, when the Astana players’ body clocks are telling them it’s after 2am, would go down a treat.

I’ve always been a bit more ambivalent about Leonel Messi than most.  “He’s not hit the levels of Ronaldinho” is my stock comment, and then there’s the dirty little subject.  (Tax).

But his media comments ahead of tomorrow’s International Champions Cup game, “I have a Celtic jersey at home. The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them”, proves there’s substance to the man.

I’ve a Celtic jersey at home too, Leo.  A few of us here do.

Former-Rangers former vice-chairman Donald Findlay is to defend Craig Whyte is his forthcoming trial.

Whyte’s urban legend is going to be difficult to shift, but it’s not accurate.  We mocked Rangers fans a few years ago, referring to him as “Our Hero” but he never was.  He was the bag man for a very dirty job.

How he handled the SFA, Uefa, HMRC and, most crucially, the insolvency court, when he managed to secure the appointment of Duff and Phelps as Rangers administrators was crucial in the continuation of football at Ibrox.

It was Duff and Phelps who gave Newco the right to use the name “Rangers”, after which point Whyte could claim he was passing on “Rangers”.  Everyone else mocked this liquidation fantasy at the time.  Until liquidation became a reality, that is.

Whyte left Newco relatively safe in the hands of Charles Green, where it would have thrived, if it hadn’t faced a hostile and damaging takeover bid from its first week of life.

Our auction prize, donated by (the pretty fabulous) Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, closes just after 1pm today.

You can win:

2 seats in the directors’ box

Champagne reception

5 course meal in the Walfrid Suite

Fully expenses bar (pre and post-match)

Half time snacks and refreshments

Car Parking

At the game against Kilmarnock on 24 September.

Money raised from the auction will go towards building a school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals. It it will be the 5th CQN school kitchen.

Our four existing kitchens feed over 2000 primary aged kids every day. School attendance has increased 30% since kitchens were built, as kids attend for their daily meal. This has an impact on health, education and life chances.

You can follow the auction on eBay here.  Thank you.

I’m off to Aberdour now for the 12th annual CQN Golf Open.  I’ll be the one holding the jackets.

See you then.

I hope the bhoys recover from their travels in time for Wednesday. ;-) We will need to increase our energy, effort and concentration.

*exactly, we have to remember our players travelled tae almost China and back, just in the door and out again tae Dublin.

I enjoyed the game and got a lot of encouragement from the youngsters on show, young Ralston’s a big lad. The future looks bright for the green and white.

BTW I would love if Steven Gerrard came tae us, he owes Brendan big time.

  2. Watching the game today I have to admit though I have a problem doing so that Scott Brown is not the answer.

Time after time Saidy Janko was left 2 on one partially due to Paady not getting back but I do not want to see i him have to do that as he is productive going forward and our major threat.

Instead I saw SB pointing all the first half where people should be instead of doing that himself.

I do like Scott Brown but maybe the time has come for Celtic to take a gamble and drop him.

Just my opinion but was obvious to me today sorry.

No shame in a 3-1 doing from Barca..

Stevie Murray was, and still is, an underrated player for Celtic. Ahead of his time, he was the box to box all rounder who apparently cost 100m euros these days.

*and the reason Jock let Bobby Murdoch leave. He was school captain when I was at St Pats, my brother played in the same school team as him.

I was asking you the obligatory question of any new poster.

You took offence. Which was a good sign. :)

Tontine Tim. Gerard would be the best thing if it happened, again IMHO

*could be Brendan’s Bertie Auld or Lubo.

Exactly coaching job for him at Celtic would be a given.

Scott Brown still has a lot to give but right now he is struggling.

I am dreading his encounter with Baron if truth be told, RED CARD waiting to happen , again IMHO.

    Mincey,

No,you are on the button about Brown imo pal.

Never thought he was a great player for Celtic.

In fact,I think he was better for Hibs.

Simply because he played in a more advanced role for them.

Now that Brendan has put his cards well and truly on the table saying he needs another 4 players, hopefully the midfield is his priority.

We badly need a player in the mould of Craig Burley.

A fit, strong dynamo with an eye for a goal.

    Brown,Bitton,Johansen,Armstrong.

    Time for the exit door.

Cheers pal, some player seem to be beyond criticism and managers too but for me we have a huge problem when the opposition have the ball as we have no shape and do not defend well.

We look good when we have the ball but watch other teams and they have a pattern when not in possession, we do not.

Scott Brown is at the heart of that for us.

    How you read.

  15. Anyone wanting Steven Gerard hasn’t been keeping up to date with football.

He is finished, his legs have gone, would make Biton look pacy.

Let the man retire with grace.

The other thing about our captain is that he has lost a yard of pace which his hustling game depended on.

He unfortunately does not have a yard of pace to lose.

i,m sure other Hoops fans must be concerned too.

Like I said ,hope he comes good and becomes a legend ,by god we need one.

I have a lot of faith in what BR will bring to my club

  20. Tricoloured Ribbon on

    GLENDALYSTONSILS,

Despite a plethora of midfielders, there’s not one I would trust.

Rogic definitely has ability and carries a good shot, but I’m still not convinced.

Perhaps with a couple of good midfielders he might flourish.

Allan hasn’t had enough game time to properly assess him imo.

Henderson for me has had the biggest raw deal of all.

Anytime he was in the first team he never let us down and I think the boy was downhearted when he was loaned out.

Definitely think there’s a player in him.

    As for the rest cheerio.

  21. Brendan has a Massive job on his hands.

    He is the Celtic Manager.

Nothing is bigger IMO, but I am biased.

It is about being the very best you can be, in whatever Role, that happens to be.

Brendan is Lucky to be the Manager of Celtic.

I am sure he will have noticed when players have hidden when the chips are down.

It is no real surprise that Kieran Tierney was left behind. There are definitely a few Gems currently within the squad.

Efe was very solid yesterday, proving again he is the unluckiest Celtic player ever.

I think we definitely need a new Keeper. Looks like he has lost focus for a while now.

The midfield was weak, extremely weak, been like that for a while now. I’m hoping Paddy’s utter enthusiasm for the game can be infectious, that guy worked his ass off to get back and help the defence, and him being the guy we are looking to for Forward thinking. On Loan.

The work ethic has been Shocking for years now.

  23. Delaneys Dunky,

I managed to get 2 105 tickets for the Astana game. Ordered them right after the deadline.

It will be the only game to see from a great view this season. I intend to enjoy it. Hopefully I will get in to the game on time.

It can be chronic trying to get home when the Leather Belts are playing a Biggie. I don’t mind that whatsoever. Most annoying when the rockets pack their place against the lower league teams in Scotland. Not much fun a 90 minute journey home.

  24. LOSTINBENIDORMONTHEWAYTOBARCA on

Enjoyed watching today’s game without the pressure of previous encounters.

Brendan’s right we need four more.

Any cqn’rs from Fort William. I’ll be there for the hearts game. After a wee run up there the day before.

    HH

  25. Just in after watching us then the Real Madrid Celtic game. Conclusion? We are slow, ponderous and utterly crap. Watch Marcelo rocket in two goals, one with his right, one with his left, then watch Madrid’s third and Turan’s first, then compare that to our pathetic shooting attempts on goal , if you can can call them that.

Brown, Bitton, Forrest, Roberts, Rogic, Cifti, you name it – their shots are either trundling pass backs to the keeper or blootered past the post or miles over the bar. Hopeless.

First half midfield, Forrest, McGregor, Bitton, Brown – might as well have not been on the field. Useless.

I can understand Barca being more skillful, but why are their third stringers so much fitter and yards faster than our first team players? As for our first touch, just forget it. Completely outclassed. Just as well Iniesta and 20 others were rested. Otherwise, it would have been really embarrassing.

    IniquitousIV

  26. Hunderbirds are Gone on

    Our midfield, random thoughts

Broony, perhaps on the wane but deserves his place, based on past performances, until someone earns the right to replace him. Not happened yet.

Armstrong, can still make it. He needs a run in the middle, 10 games or more. If he gets that run, he has to repay the manager and deliver.

Rogic, disnae want to be there, so GTF

Ajer, deserves chances. Will be a good player………in a few years.

    Christie, see Ajer

    Biton? Dunno? Really dunno.

McGregor, can be effective, but his limitations are highlighted against better teams. Squad player, SPFL only.

Roberts creates a conundrum. He is currently our most effective midfielder so has to play. However we must do everything we can to retain his services permanently, or secure a like for like replacement. To become dependent on him, and allow him to leave at the end of the season without a suitable replacement taking his place would be criminal. IMO.
