The Craig Whyte narrative. Kris, Leo.

1626

Best news of the day?  Kris Commons wants to be involved tomorrow against Barcelona.  I doubt Kris is anywhere near match fit, so there’s no chance of him starting on Wednesday against Astana, but a 15 minute cameo, when the Astana players’ body clocks are telling them it’s after 2am, would go down a treat.

I’ve always been a bit more ambivalent about Leonel Messi than most.  “He’s not hit the levels of Ronaldinho” is my stock comment, and then there’s the dirty little subject.  (Tax).

But his media comments ahead of tomorrow’s International Champions Cup game, “I have a Celtic jersey at home. The games against Celtic were special and I want to remember them”, proves there’s substance to the man.

I’ve a Celtic jersey at home too, Leo.  A few of us here do.

Former-Rangers former vice-chairman Donald Findlay is to defend Craig Whyte is his forthcoming trial.

Whyte’s urban legend is going to be difficult to shift, but it’s not accurate.  We mocked Rangers fans a few years ago, referring to him as “Our Hero” but he never was.  He was the bag man for a very dirty job.

How he handled the SFA, Uefa, HMRC and, most crucially, the insolvency court, when he managed to secure the appointment of Duff and Phelps as Rangers administrators was crucial in the continuation of football at Ibrox.

It was Duff and Phelps who gave Newco the right to use the name “Rangers”, after which point Whyte could claim he was passing on “Rangers”.  Everyone else mocked this liquidation fantasy at the time.  Until liquidation became a reality, that is.

Whyte left Newco relatively safe in the hands of Charles Green, where it would have thrived, if it hadn’t faced a hostile and damaging takeover bid from its first week of life.

Our auction prize, donated by (the pretty fabulous) Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, closes just after 1pm today.

You can win:

2 seats in the directors’ box

Champagne reception

5 course meal in the Walfrid Suite

Fully expenses bar (pre and post-match)

Half time snacks and refreshments

Car Parking

At the game against Kilmarnock on 24 September.

Money raised from the auction will go towards building a school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals. It it will be the 5th CQN school kitchen.

Our four existing kitchens feed over 2000 primary aged kids every day. School attendance has increased 30% since kitchens were built, as kids attend for their daily meal. This has an impact on health, education and life chances.

You can follow the auction on eBay here.  Thank you.

I’m off to Aberdour now for the 12th annual CQN Golf Open.  I’ll be the one holding the jackets.

See you then.

    We Will Rise Again

The celebrations of the past week in Ireland are a welcome reminder of the indestructible nature of the spirit of freedom. Who would have thought in August, 1914, that in March, 1916, the principle of a distinct and separate existence for Irish Nationality would evoke such splendid manifestations of popular support and popular approval. In August, 1914, it seemed to many of the most hopeful of us that Ireland had at length taken its final plunge into the abyss of Imperialism, and bade a long farewell to all hopes of a separate unfettered existence as a nation.

Plans carefully laid for years before had been suddenly and relentlessly put in operation. A party of Parliamentary representatives elected to obtain Home Rule from England, and without any mandate expressing hostility to any other people, suddenly claimed the power and right to pledge the manhood of Ireland to battle with a friendly nation – a nation whose last public act towards Ireland had been an attempt to open the port of Queenstown when shut by English intrigue. The same Parliamentary Party publicly renounced all hope and desire that this country should ever attain the status of nationhood, and expressly limited the ambitions of Ireland to such freedoms as the British Government would judge to be not incompatible with the British Empire. Having so limited the claims and renounced the hopes of Ireland this Parliamentary Party consummated its treason by calling upon their fellow countrymen to go out to die, in order to win for Belgium those national rights and powers they had just renounced the right to claim for Ireland.

The public press, the vaunted guardians of public liberty, sold themselves in a body to the Government that had publicly pledged itself not to interfere with an Orange-cum-militarist conspiracy against the liberties of Ireland, and immediately became the foulest slanderers and vilifiers of all who stood by the national cause they had deserted.

The few papers that refused to be bullied, or to be bought, were ruthlessly suppressed by military force.

All over Ireland the public representatives whom a lifetime of political intrigue, vote-hunting and job-hunting had debased and demoralised, yielded at the first onset of the new Irish Imperialism, and joyfully, eagerly, exultantly sold their country and their country’s cause.

August, 1914, and the months immediately succeeding it, were months of darkness and of national tribulation. If the darkest hour is that before the dawn, then the dawn should not be far off, for surely no darker hour could come for Ireland than that we passed through in the beginning of this English war upon Germany.

But slowly, gradually, but persistently, the forces standing for the social and national freedom of Ireland won the people back to greater sanity and clearer visions. Despite imprisonment, despite persecution, despite suppression of newspapers, despite avalanches of carefully framed lies, the truth made headway throughout the country. The people saw clearer and clearer that nothing had been changed in Ireland, that Ireland was still denied every prerogative that makes for true nationhood, that her interests were still subject to the interests of a rival country, that the Home Rule Act expressly declared for the subjection of Ireland as a permanent condition, that the Redmond-Devlin party had sold the birthright of their country in return for the valueless promise of a Government that did not even keep faith with its own countrymen or women, that the British Empire and the freedom or prosperity of the Irish people were two things that could not exist together in Ireland, and that therefore one or the other must forever and utterly perish.

All through Ireland last week the manhood and womanhood of the nation have gladly, enthusiastically proclaimed their realisation of those truths. This 17th of March will be forever memorable for that reason. The magnificent parades of Volunteers under arms, the overflowing meetings, the joyous abandon of the Irish gatherings of all descriptions, and above all the exultant rebel note everywhere manifest, all, all were signs that the cause of freedom is again in the ascendant in Ireland.

The Cause is not lost, this 17th of March has assured us that despite all the treasons of all the traitors Ireland still remains as pure in heart as ever, and though Empires fall and tyrannies perish

    We Will Rise Again.

  10. Brendan’s immediate task is to get us past Astana on Wednesday.

I’m sure that he will be successful

He has some players who have lost their way.

I am sure he will be working hard over the next two or three days to instill confidence in Efe, for we have very few, if any alternatives.

It would be unfair to throw Ajer and O’Connell into this must win game.

Sure he scored an OG today, but

A). Was he soley to blame?

B). Do we have a more viable pairing?

Brendan is also going to provide cover in front of the pair.

Brown, Ajer, McGregor? Which two of these three?

I’d be tempted to push Kieran forward alongside Brown and play Izzy at left back but that would be a real experiment.

The good news is that if we keep a clean sheet we win.

And conversely , Astana know that they have to score to survive.

That will be at the forefront of their thinking and tactics.

Will we start the game with the intention of frustrating their efforts or throw caution to the wind and go for it ?

    It`ll be interesting to see.

  12. Just watched rerun of the game last night.

    For all you Efe lovers.

Astana will be praying he plays on Wednesday.

It almost guarantees them the away goal they need.

    OG for 2nd goal.

    Nutmegged for third.

Morning Bhoys. While Efe gets the blame for being blunderman there is another side to the problem in my opinion and that is Craig Gordon as he does not command the box as he should do and he is often caught in two minds. His first season with us he was good but he has fallen away I do not know the reason for it but if we had a decent back up I would rest Gordon for a bit and try out another keeper.H.H.

  15. I liked what I saw yesterday (apart from the score) there where a lot of positives, there where a couple of negatives but I’ll leave that to the experts in here who are second to none on that subject, a good all round team effort, skill full, fast passing, and running off the ball, there is much to look forward to in this team, as a attacking team we look good, a couple of Wee things will need to be worked on that’s a given, but not far away from the finished article IMO that is. JFH,

I might be wrong here but I think Craig Gordon had Virgil and Jason Denayer in front of him first season, fairly settled and both very good players. If you’re a goalkeeper, this results in increased confidence and builds a good understanding with the two guys immediately in front of you. Fast forward and the poor guy doesn’t know who is going to be in front of him from game to game and add in the possibility that the ball might come flying off one of your own unexpectedly, it’s little wonder that he’s down on confidence. It’s the most important part of your team and demands a degree of stability, we haven’t had this for more than a year.

  19. Overall not too fussed about yesterday. We got a spanking but not as bad as it was heading for at half time. Onwards till Wednesday, anyone know how the Manaky Mob got on yesterday, I searched all over the Rangers Web ( bbcsportscotland.co.uk) but I must have the wrong web site?

I did see though that they won a trophy over in the Occupied Six yesterday, so at least they kept the home fires burning, if there are any pallets left over there.

Off to gym now, a small loosener session today, last four days have seen me ramp up the miles on treadmill and road so I am just easing off today with some cross trainer and core stuff.

Dinner will be a healthy affair, manchego cheese and Serrano ham, home made salsa with quality pork sausages baked in the oven, side salad. Going for high protein and low carbs today but with lots of flavour..

    Have a good day everyone.

  20. Jimmynotpaul on

    Morning all.

Over the top reaction to a 3.1 defeat,in a friendly, from one of the best teams in the world, by some on here. The name calling of some of our players is bang out of order. If you feel the need to criticise by all means do so but try and do it in a constructive way. There is no way our players can reach the level they have and be the names they have been called by some on here, to me is shows a lack of awareness of football and how difficult it is to move up levels. Of course, we should always try to sign better quality of players but it’s not always easy for many reasons, two immediately are wages and quality of SPFL, seriously if you were a skilful player would you want to come to Scotland from abroad when referees appear to live in a bygone age of dinosaurs and allow skilful players to be fouled with impunity, it’s a mans game and all that rubbish. Let the skilful players flourish I say.

T.D. Good to see you had a blast on holiday. Did you capture my pal H.T.?Some people even suggesting you are one and the same as he has flounced since you’ve been abroad. :-)))))

  21. On the Efe booing.

I think we are long past the point where we could remotely describe ourselves as “the best fans in the world”.

That generation has well and truly passed.

Attending CP these last 4 or 5 years and you hear a litany of vitriol, scorn, anger, and disgust directed at our own players. There is a self-satisfied smugness to much of the anger. An “I told you so” certainty in the tone or the abuse.

This attitude is prevalent across society these days: fundamentally it’s a towering sense of entitlement. A sense of “why am I not being entertained?”. A refusal to accept there may be another viewpoint to one’s own. A quickness to incandescent rage and an inability to respond to events in a measured manner.

We are the cybernate of the football world.

The Green Brigade are the glowing exception, and, much as I disagree with their politics, only they seem to embody the mantra of supporting the team through tick and thin, triumph and disaster.

Booing Efe doesn’t surprise me. Given the way the majority of Celtic fans behave these days, it’s entirely to be expected. And when he leaves, we’ll simply move onto the next guy…

  22. Jimmynotpaul on

    Magic.

He’s still lurking, maybe that will tempt him on to reply.

Although he is on holiday just now, so not sure how much lurking he’s doing.

  23. kevinlasvegas on

Decent run out last night, Enjoyed it as a whole, chasing shadows as expected. Our Mid is still invisible for log periods of every game so far this season, No matter who he puts in the same result. I saw some posters talking about an experienced MD player in, I am not surprised Brendan is looking outside the club for a MD general.

We lack leadership, Brown in a big game looks out his depth, He is trying 110% but he never directs or talks to his team mates and hence why the MD disappear through out games, there is no shape or communication.

Efe is so unlucky, but he still has little awareness especially when he lands after a header, he seems disoriented at times when challenging for the ball. I also think he makes the whole team nervous as no one knows what he is going to do. Not efe beating, Just telling the truth. The Kazak’z will definitely concentrate on him and I fear we will go out because of it, That is my only fear for mid week. If we get the midfield right we will go through I hope. But what works in Midfield?

I had high hopes for guys like Armstrong, Allan and McGregor but all three look very poor over the past 10 days or so, Mcgregor especially, who we know can be very positive and direct. Armstrong looks like he can’t raise his game to play for Celtic and Allan looks like his touch has gone and his confidence.

Which takes us back to last years Midfield of Jo, Bitton and Brown. Rogic can be awesome but won’t sign up.

No wonder Brendan is looking elsewhere.

Up top our Leigh is his deadly self but he needs help, We need a striker in who scores goals.

Dembele looks like he may need a word or time to settle, Brendan will win him round. His touch is poor and his head goes down as soon as he gets the ball.

we need a big turnaround in the squad and I think Brendan will know who he wants to keep now and who can go.

Just my opinion, Only Brendan’s count. Big decisions. He wants four. That’s a lot more to come in with at least that amount going the other way.

For what it’s worth Henderson and Ajer in MD might be worth a look and Ciftci has looked a lot better since Brendan came in, I suspect he might get kept as a alternate kind of striker.

I’m sure there are a lot of Celtic fans that would like to see more of Liam Henderson in the Hoops before

certain others that have been given more game time. It’s surprising that Liam hasn’t been used more this pre season and it’s already alerted Neil Lennon, enough to make an enquiry.

Could it be that we are about to make another mistake to compound the millions wasted in the transfer market mainly on Tayside?

  25. Celtic Champs Elect on

I remember going to the games during the lions era and one player who copped a lot of abuse was Tommy Callaghan who I and my uncle Tony thought was a great player yet many many Celtic supporters did not. As for Effe I believe like others do on here he should be played in front on the back four
