The international precious commodities

505

The first reaction to the international break is never positive: “How many players do we have away and what condition will we get them back in?” The team which stopped the ten had more representatives at the 1998 World Cup than any other side (a remarkable achievement), but we caught a cold from these exploits the following season.

Leigh Griffiths would no doubt be delighted to start for Scotland this week. Representing your country is one of the things footballers look back on in their later years, so for his own sake, I hope Leigh gets the call, but for Celtic’s I’d be quite happy for him to have a quiet couple of weeks.

Griffiths, Scott Brown and Nir Bitton are precious commodities to Celtic right now, we can’t afford international mishaps for any of them. There’s better cover for the others who will be on international duty, but Stefan Johansen in particular looks like could do with a break.

You’ll know Packie Bonner’s autobiography, The Last Line, launches this month. Packie has a night at Walkabout in Glasgow on 29th October, where the big man will speak about his career, and many other things, past and contemporary. Tickets are available here.

I tend to think that due to past international breaks CQN isn’t a great place to be. It like having a full moon for a fortnight and brings out the worst in some people, sometimes best to be avoided….

  2. Regarding people reading but not posting. Probably one of the strengths of the site is the friendships between a lot of the posters. Maybe you don’t realise the amount of posts which are about ‘meet ups’, and informing each other that you emailed them or texted them. But it makes someone, like me anyway, feel a bit sidelined or in the margins. It’s hard to engage in those types of posts so most of the time I just read the posts and skip past all that stuff.

This is not a criticism, good on you all. Just a reflection.

It counts as ONE not ten. They are unique numbers. If you want to email me with details on what is happening at your end I will try to resolve? Are you saying you are being kicked out or have to log in afresh each time you visit the site?

Re big Marc Reiper @ WC98.

I recently found out that, perhaps surprisingly – it was to me at any rate – that he was the first Celtic player to score in a World Cup Finals!

By that I mean playing for Celtic at the time of the World Cup.

He scored prior to a certain Craig Burley doing so for Scotland v Norway.

    Just like the buses eh?

Me,in my selfish way would rather Celtic players didn’t play in Internationals the week before Euro Qualifiers, in my opinion they should be rested from internationals so as they can be fit for the qualifiers in the Europa League.

    ——————————————

    Oldtim67

Surely any team we would meet at European level will have similar numbers as ours away on international duty?

I get the argument about affecting domestic games as any team we meet after a European tie will have had little – if any – players away on international duty, but I don’t think this argument hold up when talking about a Europa game.

Of course we can also argue the fact that irrespective of the above, all players are professional athletes. Is it too much to ask (in this day and age with all the technology, monitoring equipment, nutrition experts etc etc) to play 2 or 3 games for 90 mins every week? I’ve never heard Barcelona / Bayern etc moaning about having too many games to play when they get to CL final etc.

    Just my thoughts.

etims article this morning saying we have to pay about 14ml pound to the co-op by 2019.

    might be old news.

I wouldn’t worry. Dermot’s got 14m in loose change rattling about in the side pocket of his golf bag.

  7. GuyFawkesaforeverhero on

Is young Calvin Miller fit and able at present? I didn’t read his name on the Celtic page which detailed our players away to international squads.

On the etims Celtic debt, the full 2015 accounts will show we owe Co-op £7m due 2019. The loan facility has been reduced to £14m which means we haven’t drawn down the second half of what’s available to us (and we won’t). The previous overdraft facility of £12m has changed to a revolving credit facility of £6m. Using this facility will be like using a credit card instead of a debit card, i.e. higher interest charged by bank.

The overall reduction of £12m reflects the distressed state of the Co-op bank, not Celtic. Having such facility available and unused gives the club’s auditors comfort when they pass judgement on our future financial prospects.

    TIMHORTON

Re the £14m,I think that is explained in the accounts-though could be wrong.

We have a working overdraft facility with them-which presumably runs out then.

    However,we cover it with cash-in-hand.

At year’s end,we refer to net cash, plus or minus. At the moment it is in positive territory.

When the o/d facility is no longer available,we square it up from another account and move on to our next facilitator.

AFAIK,we are the only club in Scotland which any bank trusts sufficiently to offer this. That’s one of the reasons I always congratulate the board for their financial acumen, while hammering them for how they’ve achieved it.

  9. Winning captains,

A couple of issues using ipad.

Getting kicked out is the most annoying but it is frequent and on some days I just give up, it usually happens after I first log in, it’s only happend a few times today, which you’ll see if you want to have a look at the number of times I’ve logged in, check further back and you’ll see on some days it can be well over 20 times in a short space of time.

Another issue is that what I touch the time stamp of the last commet by anyone it refreshes the page but returns to the top of the page not the time stamp comment I touched, this only ha

Pens on page one of every blog.

  10. The article is the main bit of the blog – the great examples of Celtic supporters building a rapport via the comments section with other Celtic supporters is a fantastic off-shoot of this fine example of citizen journalism.

I tune in for our hosts take on things Celtica – I stay when the company is good and I like to see our community put it up to those who despise our very existence.

Just as we have subverted hun social media sites, so have some of the huns, sleekitly befouling this Dear Green Place by their trolling presence.

It is to be expected – and from which we will likely……………. never walk alone. Their objective is “spoiling” having failed to to prevent the fall of their own kind and the rise of ours.

The most likely scenario is we’ll refinance. Co-Op will be enjoying the interest payments and provided they keep being paid on a timely matter they’ll be happy.

  12. I thought it was an overdraft facility which we’ve hardly touched which will need to be renewed in 2019 ?

This blog that we’re on now started at 12.18pm yesterday,we’re coming up 12 13pm today and there has been only 274 posts. Why is that,

Is it that some guys are suffering because they can’t get through the advertising barrier ,or, is it because of the crap that some posters have had to endure from other posters,

  16. Just read back there about the latest Canadian superstar. He had a full page 3 spread a year or so ago and that was that, might be because his da works in City Hall and has access tae the Toronto Star sports department.

Last week there was a small story about a Brampton lad, 26 BTW, Junior Hoilett of QPR who had decided tae opt for Canada instead of his parents native Jamaica or England where he’s been since the age of 13.

That’s a story worth printing, no some daft wee scarboro boy who cannae get a game for lower league 3rd world side.

I access cqn via kindle fire these days. I find that I frequently get frozen pages or site shuts down unexpectedly. I then have to reload from the start in both situations. No problems if I can nick the wife’s iPad.

Don’t know if it is a cqn issue, an issue with the kindle software or possibly some malware.

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this if you have any ideas. Hopefully not “buy an iPad”. :)

  18. I’v never had a problem with the new CQN format, had its bells and whistles at the start, but that was to be expected.

As for posters? I don’t see any changes, unless you are talking about when we lose a game yes the usual suspects are all in feeding there agenda, that’s why this week will be nice, we won……shhhhhhhhhhhhhh (whispers) they don’t like that.

    Lurking Huns GIRFUYs.

  19. Hunderbirds are Gone on

I only started lurking on CQN earlier this year, and I think my first post was maybe late June, or July, so I am new to this community and have no historical point of reference, to gauge if it has declined or not. CQN is the first online forum I have ever contributed to, or even visited regularly, so I have no comparative point of reference either, as to any decline in tone, or quality.

Prior to June 2015, my life was too busy to engage in online forums, but as the result of a medical issue, I was off work for a long time, and either in hospital, or stuck in the house for a while. During that period CQN was a godsend, and I enjoyed lurking, and eventually posting immensely. So for me, this is a great place, especially as I am currently off work permanently, after a brief return. I hope I am not one of the “new posters” that Oldtim refers to, and I personally tilt reading some posters opinions, but it really isn’t a problem to be selective in what you read, is it? I agree with some who have described this as their online boozer, and just like the local, some nights are better than others, and sometimes a bunch of radges are in. What do you do? Have one pint and head somewhere else.

If CQN is not what it was, then leaving isn’t going to help is it? Anyway I think it’s great, but it’s not real life. Relax, enjoy. Support the Celtic. Love the Celtic. Hail Hail.

  20. I visit from my laptop and have no login slung out problems and have never seen an advert

There is definitely more to read on CQN sites. I don’t doubt that.

Much of it is a c&p from the MSM. It has been commented on here many a time. What is going on when this site posts the snide articles about our club?!

I went back a month ago,the posts seemed to average about 350 a time, not including game time.

If I went back two years,it would be regularly into four figures.

Now,you’re a great man for pointing out the decline in the heart and soul of Scottish newspapers-those who actually buy it. And base your predictions of their impending doom on those statistics.

IMO,the heart and soul of CQN is the people who post on here. And from what I can see,it is in a similar decline. It’s your call, mate. You came up wi the new plan.

I would be considering Plan B by now,if not Plan Z. Cos whatever plan you are working from,it is not working.

  23. The blog seems to have acquired a different kind of poster in the last six months.

There is a bit more bickering but i always put it down to the argumentative nature of Scots and Irish.

I rarely converse as most of my drivel is usually ignored.

  24. Name that defender.

Team 1 up in big important match at the weekend.

Gives ball away under no real pressure near the halfway line, allowing opposing striker to break towards penalty box.

A team mate saves his blushes with a great tackle on the edge of the box.

Our defender runs on to the loose ball, but terrible first touch and lack of awareness of who’s around him leads to opponent nicking the ball, causing defender to lunge in and give away a penalty.

  26. WC personally I think you’re between a rock and a hard place. I have great admiration for the effort and time you Paul and others put into this enterprise but please listen to your”customers” feedback. I chose to quit posting some time ago, could’nt stand the bitterness and lack of humour/craic. I had second thoughts and returned but many have’nt. We need to find out why and see if the situation can be reversed. Hail Hail Hebcelt

  27. The site hasn’t been the same since the referendum campaign started.

There’s a rancorous conflict that wasn’t there before.

Hardly surprising really, and just a reflection of life in Scotland generally.

Mind you the gradual downsizing and lack of direction at the Club haven’t helped.

  28. For me, the number of posts is irrelevant. I’m more concerned with the quality of them.

I’d also say as long as the number of unique readers is quite high the blog must be doing something right.
