The international precious commodities

505

The first reaction to the international break is never positive: “How many players do we have away and what condition will we get them back in?” The team which stopped the ten had more representatives at the 1998 World Cup than any other side (a remarkable achievement), but we caught a cold from these exploits the following season.

Leigh Griffiths would no doubt be delighted to start for Scotland this week. Representing your country is one of the things footballers look back on in their later years, so for his own sake, I hope Leigh gets the call, but for Celtic’s I’d be quite happy for him to have a quiet couple of weeks.

Griffiths, Scott Brown and Nir Bitton are precious commodities to Celtic right now, we can’t afford international mishaps for any of them. There’s better cover for the others who will be on international duty, but Stefan Johansen in particular looks like could do with a break.

You’ll know Packie Bonner’s autobiography, The Last Line, launches this month. Packie has a night at Walkabout in Glasgow on 29th October, where the big man will speak about his career, and many other things, past and contemporary. Tickets are available here.

Delaney’s, both were far better than that laudrupture character. At least our Danes never had to be smuggled in the boot of a car to and from training like Laudrupture had to do when he was at AC. The fans there weren’t too keen on.him.

    PLEASE READ

Not long after I went to University in 1979 I was introduced to the first piece of British legislation which defined “homelessness” and what it meant to be homeless.

My study of the 1977 Homeless Persons Act and how it came into being was a real eye opener for a privately educated schoolboy from the West end of Glasgow.

It took years of campaigning by organisations like the Simon Community and Shelter to force the Government into introducing legislation which at least attempted to insure that every man, woman and child had a right to a roof over their heads.

Unfortunately, the legislation was abused and many people who were homeless were forced to live in truly dreadful bed and breakfast like conditions in poor hotels with poor facilities. What was officially classed as licensed bed and breakfast accommodation was in truth overcrowded squalor!

In Glasgow, may of these places were to be found along Suachuehall Street towards Kelvingrove, On Great Western Road, Queens Drive in Langside and in various other locals.

Many were overcrowded and simply unfit for any human habitation – yet they were official licensed residences.

Entire families lived like this and if you didn;t accept what was on offer your benefits were cut and you were out on the street with nowhere to stay.

Many politicians were obsessed with the notion that many people chose to be deliberately homeless in order to gain benefits and to live in accommodation such as that described above which was paid for by the state.

Nothing could have been further from the truth.

The biggest single cause of homelessness is the break down of a relationship resulting in one or more people leaving a home and finding themselves on the street, sleeping rough in all weathers and facing the dangers of a night on the streets.

Some people had an alcohol problem, by the 80’s there were many with drug problem, some were just alone, frightened and on occasion to prous to turn to friends or family for help. So they stayed on the street.

Some only intended to sleep rough for a few nights at first, but bit by bit the slid off the social radar, were missed by the benefits agencies and the social work department, and simply became permanently homeless using station washrooms etc whenever possible or necessary.

Once you are off the soical radar, for whatever reason, it is very hard to get back on track and regrettably almost 40 years after the 1977 act, Government has still never fully tackled the problem.

By 1982, supplementary benefit had reached the heady heights of £14.90 per week and it was estimated that the number of homeless in Britain had edged towards the 100,000 mark.

There were certainly plenty in evidence around George Square and Queen Street station where I started work.

Shortly after I started my legal trainseeship, I started working with the late Willie Blaney and his alcohol refuges in Clydebank and Albert Drive, and the Drug Problem Resource Group he had set up in the former St Peter’s Seminary in Cardross.

In my formative legal years, there was not a week that went by without me being introduced to at least one new homeless person.

Today, the number of homeless people on Britain’s streets is once again increasing steadily.

The Simon community, Shelter and many organisations which should no longer be needed are still giving many many people a helping hand, a blanket, a sleeping bag, a cup of soup and so on.

A couple of years ago, a long long standing friend of mine who some will know from twitter as @dermot56 was so taken aback by the current homeless situation that he started his own we charity called “The Invisables” as it would appear that once again homelessness and the homeless are invisable to the Government and many in society.

His efforts did not go unnoticed by the Simon community, and various other charities including, i’m glad to say, The Celtic Charity Foundation.

So, working with and through the Celtic FC Charity Foundation, a group of us are attempting to raise money to help the homeless in Glasgow this Christmas and over the winter period. We will sleep out in the grounds of Celtic Park on the night of 14th November in the hope that we can raise some funds and raise awareness of a problem which should be an affront to any sensible and compassionate society.

We will only be homeless for a single night and by choice.

Many people do not have that choice.

Recently big branded supermarkets and other property owners started to place spikes round their premises so that homeless people could not sleep near or in the shadow of their shops, or shelter comfortably – or as comfortably as possible – out of the rain, underneath their awnings etc.

The message was clear – ” You will not be homeless on our turf – move on!”

It is an all too common attitude.

So this is my attempt to do my wee bit for the homless and for those who offer them a helping hand.

If you can afford a donation and some support me in sleeping out for the homeless it would be greatly appreciated by me and hopefully in due course by others.

I have posted a link to my “My donate” page below.

Thanks for reading and cheers for any donations.

    !!Bada Bing!!

It’s a mystery (or is it?) how the ramshackle Govan stadium has been selected for SC semis, CW games rugby 7s, etc.

Obviously, it helps them to put much-needed funds in their coffers – and keeps their “profile” up, despite Health and Safety concerns…

Celtic Park is rightly chosen for hosting big events in Glasgow (eg, CW games opening/closing ceremonies).

My initial question was: how much did we take in for that?

I don’t remember seeing any details, and I was wondering if anybody had that kind of info.
