Toure’s ocean, The Pink Pound

479

The capture of Kolo Toure (35) on a free transfer following his release by Liverpool, goes a long way to addressing one of my key concerns for the coming season. In the last 12 months we’ve spent £6.5m on three central defenders: Dedryck Boyata, Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko. They joined Efe Ambrose and Charlie Mulgrew, but the mix was far from right.

Dedryck and Jozo are both long-term injured. Jozo may yet establish himself as a top defender, but Dedryck has already caused performance concerns. Charlie is now out of contract, and with the arrival of Kolo, I don’t expect he’ll re-sign.

Efe put in an excellent performance against Leicester on Saturday (aside from his first 30 seconds) but his consistency and susceptibility to make crucial mistakes in important games, makes him unsuitable for anything more than a backup.

The manager needs someone he knows he can rely upon and who can bring an ocean of experience to help develop what is otherwise a young central defence.  Kolo will do that and more, just as soon as he’s match fit.

The Pink Pound.

I’m unfamiliar with fashion blogs but if the debate on the pink shirt is a guide, maybe I’m missing out.  Third strips are fashion items, the football strip equivalent of bling.  They’ve been so since someone invented the need to invent a third strip every season.  It was never in case your first two strips clashed with an opponent.

I remember a similar reaction when we released a third strip with tartan shorts a few years back.  Despite some heavy weather on release, the shorts sold out.  In it’s online coverage the pink shirt already has a higher profile than most of its predecessors.  Bet it sells well.

I had a brief chat with some people at New Balance last year and the colours we use at Celtic cropped up.  There’s green, white, yellow, black and silver/grey.  Before the 1970s it was pretty much green and white only, then the palette boundaries were pushed.  The New Balance people were all from England, so the nuances of orange, which was used as trim on a well-received black away strip, were lost on them.

The gentleman`s not for turning (or flouncing. . :-)….)

For me , it`s not migration that`s the problem , it`s having the right to decide who may be permitted to migrate.

    There`s the rub.

And to decide who must be deported without the unwanted intrusion of some foreign entity .

Japan is , in all probability , copycat.

Even if we Won in Khazakhstan, it wouldn’t mean we are through. There is a mighty fine chance Howevaaaaah of progressing.

I’m sure Brendan will allow the Kids to break through.

Building our Own is the Future, not Buying players – The market is just ridiculous. I’m All for Brexit but 1 simple comment from Nicola/SNP about the TV deals and the slight discrepancies between the populations/viewers would be worth hearing about, being a Football fan?

Getting the best possible deal for who exactly?

It is interesting that Brexit voters consisted of Welsh and English voters, giving All of Scotlands (working class) a fair share of the pie… i.e. bring them into the lavishes of paying Football players over £200000 a week.

I reckon most people just want to Njoi the Silence.

Now about that Offensive Behaviour Bill.

I agree. We can beat the Kazakhstanis. My only fear is Efe back in central defence. I love the guy but he can’t be trusted in high pressure games against sharp forwards.

When will we stop having dreadful luck with injuries?

  11. Auld Tam,

If I could have one player in the trenches with me that is playing for Celtic, I’d always go for Efe – (KT is getting there, quickly though), I also think he is a sensational footballer. Better than just about Everyone in Scotland. And those Imbeciles @ Tynecastle tried to ridicule him – he soon shut them up.

I’d like to know if Brendan tried to sign him, as there was speculation of him moving to Liverpool not long after he had joined. ;))

I’d rather he played Midfield, defensively.

  12. Good early morning from a dry, calm-ish but grey clouded (again!) East Kilbride.

Jobo’s on the road again (well, the rails actually) and today’s it’s a wee trip to Liverpool and back for a meeting. Just the 13-hour working day with about 9 of them travelling. So hope the ole CQNrs are on form today as carrying a phone is much easier than carrying a big book.

  13. Couldn’t sleep so just thought I’d ask what everyone is basing the ultra confidence on.

I haven’t seen so many, I don’t know why but I just think we’ll win posts since before our trip to Malmo.

I also remember 2 and 3 nil wins predicted regularly before trip to Molde.

None of these posts however mentioned Gibraltar(was that just two weeks ago?) or our away record in Europe.

They also failed to mention how it looks like we will line up with a makeshift midfield and defence.

Yet again our preparation for these games is abysmal let’s hope our failure to strengthen the central defence isn’t punished like letting the window close last season with one functioning striker.

Will Lawwell strike it lucky again?

Apologies if this post is construed as a tad negative, I am forced to reside in the real world.

Let’s hope Brendan can work his magic, was going to go to the pub but as its early kick off I’m preparing a spot firmly behind the couch.

It’s a sad day when Celtic supporters saying they think Celtic will win a game of football is regarded as “ultra confidence”.

I’m basing my ‘quiet’ confidence on our last 3 performances against Wolfsburg, Red Imps and Leicester. We have got over the shambles of Gibraltar and have improved dramatically.

I’ll be happy with a draw tomorrow, but feel we can indeed get a victory.

No probs, two home friendlys and a home win against LRI doesn’t constitute grounds that we have made vast improvements imo. More evidence required.

I thought I would add a little caution, away games in Europe we have struggled in the past, even when we have played well at home in the past.

Let’s hope you are right, although I would bite your hand off for a draw right now.

  22. When will Celtic stop getting these terribly bad injuries? My answer to that is, why are so many of our players running around with bandaged hands? I noticed Ajar now has one in the post game warm down against Leicester, what’s that all about eh? I’v never seen a team with so many hand injuries, even in basketball, it’s a strange one indeed, just a thought.

In these modern, enlightened times and given the current circumstances, it’s highly unlikely that the people who have the ‘right” to determine who is allowed to migrate, would have allowed the starving Irish to migrate to the United Kingdom or Australia for that matter. Everyone is a migrant in Australia as you are well aware, who determined the ‘right’ for all of those migrants to arrive or invade as some others see it? Why should some who have migrated with ease, deny others the same right based on an outdated and prejudiced assumption that ‘we know better and are better than you’
