Victor’s £1m a light amid utter insanity

1847

You want some good news? Around £1m of Tottenham’s money for Victor Wanyama will find its way to Celtic, which will offset some of the economic impact of this morning’s news. This aside, there is only bad news. If we want to buy footballers priced in euros (or anything other than GPB) they will cost more money. We will also have to pay higher wages to be competitive with European clubs.

Goods will cost more – it will start today with fuel and travel, then food, electrical goods and everything else. Wages will buy less (not just less-able footballers). Borrowing repayments will be higher. Business expenditure, wages and employment will drop, so will the tax take – and money available for welfare spend.  The poor always pay the highest penalty.

If you are rich enough and without a mortgage you can indulge in flag waving all day, happy in a delusion that self-determination even remotely exists in modern economies. Or that more self-determination over here, and a little less over there, is a panacea. It’s not, it’s just another economic crisis coming your way soon.

The entire political class have failed us. Calling a flag waving referendum was a grubby attempt to hold onto power by the prime minister; this mess is his making. Whoever succeeds him will have to successfully pander to the same party membership in order to get elected.

Jeremy Corbyn’s mealie-mouthed campaigning was an embarrassment. His “7 out of 10” backing for remain did what it was supposed to do: convince people he was going through the motions for something he didn’t believe in.

Who’s ever heard of a leader winning support for an issue he is prepared to back 7 out of 10 himself? He should go, but political ego will ensure he’ll hang around to make sure Johnson wins the next general election.

It took six days for the Greek government to abandon their own disastrous EU referendum mandate. Instead of attempting a rescue, all our political ‘leaders’ will give us is more populist power grabs. It’s already underway.

  4. Excellent, extra time, if all the games go to ET we almost get wall to wall football without having to listen to the shite BBC/ITV “experts” :O)

  6. Reading through twitter about the referendum. This ‘getting our country back’ (from who? For who?) is sickening.

It wasn’t all about racism but the vote appears to have enabled and emboldened those who are.

Sadly though, my own Comrades on the left have to bear a huge part of the blame for abandoning working class communities and trying to ape the tories and liberals to get middle England’s votes. They didn’t see votes in their heartlands as important and they let others steal their clothes. Problem being that some who stole them were xenophobic right wingers praying on workers fears while simultaneously not giving one damn about their real problems and in fact conspiring to shaft their welfare state.

    We have f#####d up badly.

    I’m depressed about it.

    Time to cull old people…

    Good evening

on what is a historic moment in history,

    a truly momentous moment

and I want to take this opportunity to discuss something

which up until now has been swept under the carpet:

    old people.

Quite frankly there are too many of them.

I’m going to say it simply

and you can quote me on this:

    there are too many old people in Britain today;

    we can’t cope

they’re putting pressure on our public services,

they’re forcing wages down through doing low-paid jobs

    and volunteering all over the place;

they’re hanging about on street corners

talking to each other in their own odd ways

they go to their own special places

segregating themselves off from the rest of us

    failing to integrate.

    But the real matter

    and let’s have a grown-up conversation here

is the fact that we can’t cope.

There is a finite number of people we can handle

    in these islands

and if you look at the statistics

you can see the way that old people go on and on living

    these days

means that the population is going up and up and up.

This puts a massive pressure on society as a whole

    and let’s face it,

    Westminster won’t talk about it.

This is a failure of the political class.

Well, now we’ve got a chance to sort this out

    ourselves

    without interference from Europe.

We can control old people ourselves.

We can do this is a sensible, grown-up, humane way.

I suggest that we need to talk about culling,

    perhaps starting with ninety-year olds

and then consider whether the old age pension

is really something we can afford.

    I suggest we can’t

and the advantage there is that this may well

encourage some old people to die sooner.

Again, we could look at the pressure that old people

    are putting on housing.

One way to deal with this is to think about special centres

    or camps

where old people could be grouped together in huts.

All this is to be talked about in an open, mature way

    but whatever happens,

today has given us this great opportunity

    to talk about such things.

    Thank you for listening

    and good night.

It’s not always the case that people can’t be arsed voting. I’ve got a mate who has never voted, he did get to the polling station for a general election once though but decided to spoil his paper with an anarchy symbol.

Told us all that he considered going back next vote as he fancied the lassie who ‘worked’ at the polling station but….

  15. Ernie

We don’t need to cull them. Treasure them for their historical contributions to society. But as for voting, they are more dangerous in a polling booth than they are behind the wheel of a car. :-)

I think we should keep sight of the fact that it was decided by a tiny margin, before we damn all the English to hell.

And I still think there could be a second referendum.
