Why this is the finest Celtic team in 47 years

751

You and I have seen some special Celtic teams. For me, the double winning team in 1977, the Centenary team and, of course, the Martin O’Neill team, were without doubt above anything we’ve had since the 60s.

I am in no way disparaging Gordon Strachan’s remarkable achievement of twice reaching the knock out stages of the Champions League. This was down to Gordon’s superior ability as a manager; the wee man didn’t have a squad to compare to the others on the list.

By contrast, this team, in its embryonic state, finished fourth in the Champions League group, but that was then. Now, they are within touching distance of winning an undefeated treble. This is the finest Celtic team I’ve seen.

The ’77 team wasn’t so much a team as a support act for Kenny Dalglish. A season later, without King Kenny, they finished fifth, without even a Uefa Cup spot as compensation.

It was sheer force of Billy McNeill’s personality which drove the Centenary team on, but they returned for preseason without their elixir.

It was like going to school watching Martin O’Neill’s team. We learned so much about the game that we’d never seen at Celtic. This was a guy who knew how to get results. But without another King, we discovered that team too was built on a single foundation.

There are no Kings in this Celtic team. They are a team in the true sense of the word. Last night, without Dembele, Armstrong, Tierney, Lustig, Simunovic and Sinclair they rolled around the Firhill surface like a machine from the 22nd century.

It was breathtaking. This is the greatest Celtic team since the one which walked off the Hampden pitch in front of 136,000 fans in 1970.

I saw a preview of the BBC documentary film, Glasgow 1967: The Lisbon Lions, which airs across the UK on Wednesday 24th May. It was heartfelt, entertaining and inspiring. I intended to review it today, but I was so annoyed at the coverage some in the media gave it, I thought I better step back to do the job justice.

They had some of the Lions, of course, and some wives too, but they sat a microphone in front of a few of our more experienced CQN’ers Some of the best things you have read on this site come to life on the screen. We’ll talk about it again next week.

Stunned and humbled at the support for the marathon, which takes place on Sunday morning, to benefit the Celtic Foundation. I just don’t know what to say. There are spectacular donations (here) there – a simple thank you does not seem appropriate, but I know every donation, large or small, means someone has taken the trouble to spend hard earned money.

It is appreciated, thank you.

If you’d like to get an historic week off to a unique start I hear there’s a projector screening of the original live broadcast and whole 90 minutes from Lisbon in a Govan warehouse tonight (Friday, 19th), it’ll run from around 6.30 till 9. If interested drop an email to cqnopen@gmail.com

Good afternoon, just to add to the Ryan Christie debate , I don’t think mcwhinless would want him in the dressing room just in case he reveals what sneaky underhand tactics he gets up to . Just saying like

  2. Why this is the finest Celtic team in 47 years!!!!! – opinions opinions – everyone has one but far too early to say that. Mr O’Neils team still eclipses the current squad imho. Remember MO’Ns team were facing a Rangers 1872 (IL) team full of multi million pound players bought by usuing other peoples money. Of course lets not forget they also gave us Seville.

There are a lot of very talented individuals in our current squad but i do wonder if any outwith Scott B, Criag G, Mousa D and Paddy R would even get a place on MO’N team’s bench. Hopefully this bunch of youngsters will go on to really become the best Celtic team since the Lions – gonna need a Henke and Lubo to do that though :-)

Tallybhoy love the way you put Pmcstay into the best ever Celtic team rather than just mcstay

That would stop people wondering was it him or Willie

  4. Also, this team has to go through 3 games just to get into the groups of the CL, the others waltzed straight in.

Great to hear Brendan has spanked The Griff and it’s over :-)

  5. It’s a great debate but there can be no definitive answer. Best to just enjoy what we have while we have it and then celebrate it when it’s over- hopefully not for several years to come!

Brendan Rodgers has so far exceeded my expectations that it’s unreal. He has turned guys who I would happily have hunted this time last year in to players who look capable of playing at the highest level. I have also been impressed by the way that he has kept the team rolling long after the title was won. Last night was a joy to watch to see the team and system function as smoothly as it did with a number of first choices not playing.

Brendan has brought back the joy in watching our team and that is like winning another trophy for this bear!

Seen the lions and every team ever since to grace the hoops.

The 69/70 team would be my favs outwith the 50yrs ago team , however IF Brendans Bhoys become treble winning invincibles, I might have a change of heart.

  20. Evening all, just back from Lisbon. Had a great time, enjoyed the company of some great Celtic fans, saw the sights , travelled to Cascais, ate and drank well and yes we did the stadium also.

Can I be a nuisance and pass on some travel tips for any of the gang heading out there next week?

Lisbon is lovely but very hilly, be warned! It will be very warm next week

The Castello is a magnificent trip.

The Metro is good but does not go everywhere

The trams go all over but are mobbed, very hot and full of pickpockets.

Taxis are great , cheap and driven by mentalists.

Hennesey’s Irish Bar did not show our game last night preferring Spurs v Leicester?

The area around Cais de Sodro station is where the Irish bars that BRTH spoke of

On the green line or blue line on Metro , get off at Baixa Chaido and visit Cafe de Brasilerio, it’s a bit touristy but there is a great cigar store next door, good bars around and a lovely chapel about 20 yards away.

Food and drink is cheap, the Time Out market across the road from Cais de Sodro is a great .place for food and quality wine.

The stadium is a great place, obviously. Delighted to be there in good company, Dennis, John and Tom. Even enjoyed the company of Dennis and John watching the game last night: all good Celtic men. Hope your journey home was safe.

    Enjoy yourself everyone. HH
