Winning against nearest rivals, Charlie Gallagher, Pablo

702

I don’t recall having seen us win the league against our direct competitors. Has it happened in the last 49 years? Yesterday’s results at Tynecastle and Pittodrie ensures that a point against Aberdeen on Sunday will be enough to confirm Celtic as 5-in-a-row champions. As it stands, a 17 goal win for Aberdeen would put us under pressure for the last two games of the season…..

This will be the fourth time in Scottish football history 5-in-a-row has been achieved and Celtic’s third. The last time we were here, Hay, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Johnstone, Wallace, Auld and Lennox did a lot of the heavy work, with youngsters like Macari, McGrain and Dalglish on the periphery of the team. It was a team which would soon embark on considerable change, which is at least one thing they have in comment with contemporary Celtic.

Another member of that Celtic team, Charlie Gallagher, left the club exactly 46 years ago today, after an extraordinary decade. Charlie will be on the blog tomorrow evening from around 7pm, to reminisce on that incredible era, answer questions and give an opinion or two. These are always great sessions, tune in and enjoy.

Five years ago today we lost Pablophanque, the first guy who said, “We need to bring Kano home”. Pablo was one of the few who made Celtic Quick News what it became in the early days. He made many friends here, who miss him still, and a profound impact on our community.

    I’d keep them all.

Surely at that age, it’s not all about winning but being part of a team?

Let them grow together, and if someone leaves, then so be it, you never know a better player may replace them por cierto.

    Tread carefully.

My son played for a hockey team who were nationally ranked and won state and regional championships over a 3 year period.

To go to next level they brought in a new coach who ditched about 8 players from squad of twenty and recruited some stars to replace.

The following season was a disaster and they did not even finish in top half of league.

    Chemistry is key.

Scott Brown brings a lot more to the Tic than tech ability (or lack thereof) as he demonstrated doing the Broonie against the dead teams grumpie hole in chief.

    I love Broonie.

Celtic supporting Celebs should never apologise (or have to) for being Celtic supporters. Again I like mine to be of the UFB type. More Rod than Billy for eg. Billy in his early years (as much as I love him in a come here and give me a manly hug type of way lol) was supposedly a Partick thistle personage.

In Belfast when he plays Rod boots Celtic footballs off the stage, the backing drum motif is the same. Met him in Jack Dempseys in NY watching an us v deid team game and he stood the Tims a round. No hiding. Whereas does Paul MC G support Celtic or West Ham? If you support a team…Ffs support them.

    Define – good news ?

If I remember correctly, you were one of the main drivers in the exercise in futility that sent a ‘statement’ to an, anti-Celtic newspaper about the status of the huns when….in the background, the Celtic PLC board had already looked the other way when the huns were allowed in the back door to div 3.

Again, your definition of, good news may well be at odds with mine.

    For me…..good news would be

1.The huns are not getting into the SPFL coz, they dont have a credit line form a bank and, they dont own they’re own stadium amongst other things.

    2. Jeanette Findlay will soon be getting the keys to Celtic FC – not PLC.

    3. The north Stand will be renamed – The James Edward McGrory Stand, with Gerry McNee and his, sacred Jimmy McGrory medal will be cutting the ribbons on opening day.

    4. Big Mark McGhee / John Collins / Roy Keane / Jim McIntyre Ar La / Roberto Di Matteo will be getting the keys to the dug out.

Loved Broonie’s comments on Walker in particular. Spent a good bit of the game ranting at the telly because of his 100% negative attitude to Celtic – the Huns must love him.

Never says anything good about Celtic unless it is followed up by a “…but…”. When Big Colin-Squared took the goal so well, it was “…a good finish by Richards, but he just doesn’t do that enough…”. When Celtic Score, it’s because of bad defending, when the opponents score, it’s “marvelous play”.

And he has such a DULL, DULL, DULL voice for commentating on fitba’ – can’t abide him (rest of his family are nice, though!!!).

When I ran youth teams I would phone the guys who ran teams in the same league, obvious teams nearer the bottom of league and tell them the situation regarding the players you wished to move on,if they were interested in them they could phone them and ask if they would be interested in playing for them.It is always better to feel wanted.HH.

  15. Maybe Broony the hero would have been better telling the fans that, all the slackers, himself included who embarrassed the hoops in the SCSF – Kieran Tierney apart – had donated all they’re match earnings for that day to, Mary’s Meals instead of trying to pull rank over Walker.

If Broony hadn’t been suspended in March 2008, WGS wouldn’t have won 3 in a row.

I reckon that the statement was a huge success, so we clearly have to agree to disagree on what success is.

Does anyone else think that the exercise in placing the statement in the Sunday Herald was unsuccessful?

We spent £1500 from the contributions on the blog ( rest went to Mary’s Meals) and a media consultant estimated we got £450k worth of media exposure.

We embarrassed them. I like that. We took the threats, abuse and so on. Just as Auldheid is experiencing at the moment. That only happens when we are getting somewhere.

Good post. The increase in sales for that paper on the day of publication showed the interest in the statement. However, perhaps time for a follow-up, eg with a pamphlet reiterating the points on every seat at Celtic Park.

Ideally, I’d like Roy as Manager and Martin as a Director of operations. The pathetic effort against that newco was truly embarrassing. This would mean Peter Lawwell would not be getting involved in things he never should be. FFS he actually went into the Dressing Room.

*I fully concur with the Derry/Cork duo as for Peter going intae the dressing room; it might have been as simple as requesting Ronny no tae disappear on the Sunday as the Kaiser was flying in.

Always a horrid situation, and one with no easy answer.

    That said…

What’s the purpose of your club? What was it that the boys ‘signed up to’ when they joined?

Was it recreational football, enjoyment, a chance to join a team, play football, a sense of belonging?

Or was it development, improvement, performance, a chance to become, to win, to live the dream?

How you deal with it should reflect the implicit promise you made to the boys when they joined. Changing it from one to the other is the quickest way to damage the good work you’ve done in recent years.

I’d also caution that at U15 the difference in the boys’ physical and mental development is at its greatest. The gap closes over the next 3 years, and boys who may stand out just now will be overtaken by those who may seem to have ‘lost their way’ in recently. Whatever you do, however you decide, remember that boys emerge as football players in their own time, not yours.

If, all of that considered, you want to increase the strength of the team for next season, by all means do so by bringing in the 3 or 4 players you think will add to your team. For those who might be ‘dropped’, consider giving them a fair set of criteria to measure themselves against.

Keep them in the group, but benchmark their running times, their fitness stats, their skill levels, and give them ‘homework’ to do. Essentially, set and publish the ‘standard’ needed to get a game for this team, measure each boy against the standard, then set each boy targets for improvement with exercises and drills to do in their own time, and let them go for it or not, at their own behest. Right now, at 14 years old, you can turn a weak foot into a strong one, develop speed, build strength, add skills.

A goalkeeper who can’t kick the ball the width of the box can be given a set of exercises and drills that over 2 months will address the problem. A boy who is physically small can find a technique to excel at that compensates the weakness. A boy apt to carry fat (many don’t shed it until 18/19 years old) can take your advice on diet and exercise over the summer and change his athletic performance.

The boys themselves will self-select in the main. And with the summer coming up, they’ve got all the time in the world to do their homework. Those who are inclined to work will do so, and you’ll get the benefit over the course of the coming season as hard work and growth do their things. Those who don’t do the work will have chosen not to. It simply wasn’t that important to them. You’re giving them the decision, rather than taking it yourself.

    Best I can do.

  23. Kristofer Ajer

Ajer has said previously that he was ‘comfortable’ as the Norwegian side’s skipper, adding: “I look at myself as a captain whether I have the armband or not because I always scream and demand everything from myself and the rest of the players.

“I’m not scared of saying ‘this is me and this is what I stand for’. Now I have to prove myself good enough at Celtic and I am not going to hide behind the rest of the squad.

“I’m told the demands are high here and I am ready for that. I’m ready to try and win every weekend. That’s why I signed. You have to win silverware every year at Celtic and that is what I want to do.”

While able to play in central defence, it is expected that Ajer will perform in the defensive midfield role when he joins Celtic – although he has been utilised as an auxiliary striker in recent games for Start.
