10-in-a-row, McGarvey, Murray and more

1472

The 10-in-a-Row CQN Charity Golf Day at Aberdour was a great success yesterday.  The irrepressible Frank McGarvey spoke about his formative years in Easterhouse and beyond, with special mentions of his legendary first and last games for Celtic.

Len Murray returned six years after his previous appearance, and spoke with humour and authority, but most of all with a burning support for Celtic.

The event raised money for The Cookie Jar Foundation, founded in memory of 19-year-old Christopher Coutts, who died of Hodkin’s Lymphoma last year and for the work of Glasgow the Caring City.

Christopher Coutts’ father, David, demonstrated a vein finder.  A vein finder is the size of a torch and has a light which shines on the arm and allows veins to be seen.

When Christopher was seriously ill medics often had trouble finding a vein for an injection, attempts were traumatic and distressing.  Twice he left hospital without treatment because veins couldn’t be found.  On a visit to a private hospital a doctor produced this torch-like device and identified a hydrated vein with ease, allowing treatment to take place.

The money we raise is going to buy these devices for NHS hospitals, where they are not provided for.  They will not save or cure anyone, but they will make the treatment of acutely ill people less distressing and, on some occasions, possible.

You can help by bidding for this magnificent canvass, signed by Billy McNeill, one of only two made.  You can also help by buying a raffle ticket for the other one.  The ebay auction is available here.  You enter the raffle by donating at least £1 here.  Get involved, you’ll be pleased you did.

On the long drive home from Fife I heard Neymar had left the field writhing in agony after going down clutching his back, just as he did, while feigning, at Celtic Park last season.  Forgive me for being cynical.  Around 1am news came through of his broken vertebra, acquired from a dangerous foul.  Let’s hope he makes a full recovery.

  5. honest question,

in the last 10-15 years what player has been sold against there wishes.?

  6. Who the FCUK came up with this “downsizing” logo? All I’ve read recently about Celtic “downsizing” had to look up dictionary to see it means = “economizing”

So we are wrong for living within our means? wish our MP’s could do the same.

Some people on here have PL as a hate (yes) figure. PL has helped to get Celtic FC into the position we are in and long may it continue.

We do not have access to the money available outside Scotland so have to cut our cloth to suit our means.

League Champions, trying for Champions League, new manager (with great ideas IMHO) and still living within our means. PL was being headhunted down south (Arsenal or Chelsea) with a helluva lot more money but chose to stay at Celtic Park. With the abuse he gets on here with “Celtic Supporters”? makes me wonder why he stays.

Don’t often (probably never) agree with Kojo but right behind him on this one.

  7. PF Ayr

“However, that does not absolve him from managerial inadequacy

Under Lenny the football was poor at times and selections baffling ”

I was defending him from the charge of having an easy living of it. I would not dream of standing between a fan and his right to criticise. That would be futile.

Under every manager, before and since managers were invented, have been criticised for the quality of play and selections have always and will continue to baffle.

    Kojo

So, anyone failing to detect any logical consistency in your loosely controlled argument is only doing so because they are anti-authority.

When you criticise the US President are you being anti-authority?

When you criticise the Celtic manager are you railing against the Boss?

    Thought not.

  8. Fess19

When PL decides he’s had enough he’ll be replaced with a PL Mk2. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding himself.

As Tontine Tim showed earlier, Celtic have never been exactly generous with money. I wonder where it all went during the days of the Kellys and Whites. Certainly not on players’ wages or on transfer fees.

  13. They’ve just shown Italy v Brazil goals from the ’82 WC 32 years ago to the day. That equaliser from Socrates, with the amazing turn and reverse pass by Zico, is one of the best goals I’ve ever seen. Never gets old, (unlike me)!

With respect,Davie Hay wasn’t sold against his wishes.

Many players of that era were,of course.

Davie kicked up,rightly, that when he was injured his wages suffered.

He was willing to take one for the team anytime it was required.

Other players who couldnae tackle a fish supper-and didnae-didn’t lose out through injury.

He demanded a transfer as a result.

IMO,Davie has been let down by our club every time we employed him.

    As a player,see above.

As a manager-pay for him yourself, btw we don’t discuss the players contracts till the end of the season. Etc

Bobby – a great Celt too. I was at the last CSA Rally, where Davie was the guest of honour. Before I left I took the opportunity to personally thank him for two of the greatest days of my Celtic supporting life – the ’85 Cup Final & Love St ’86. With typical humility, he told me not to be daft!

He made some strange team selections when manager, as most of them do (including our brave bhoy Lenny). I remember being absolutely raging at him for playing my beloved TB at left-back to accommodate Rhino, but in later years Tommy thanked him for extending his playing career at Celtic!

He was shamefully treated by our club on a number of occasions. A man with a great eye for a player (no pun intended), recognised by Wim the Tim, and I regret the fact that he hasn’t been involved with the club in some capacity for many years.
